This Song is about the singer witnessing a plane crash that killed his best friend and his girlfriend. It haunted him for years and his band mates convinced to write about it. The studio made them tone it down for radio. The original song was a lot more graphic that these lyrics. I found this song on a greatest hits record that I got at a yard sale. I was freaked out by it when I first heard it. I played it for my buddy who was into horror stories and movies. He told me years later that the song gave him nightmares after he heard it.

One reason some radio stations banned it was because people heard the siren in the song while driving, so they were pulling off to the side of the road .

This song WAS played on my local radio stations in Texas, but I think mainly because it was a Texas band!
Luckily, it did not stay on even the local playlists for very long!!!
Interestingly, this song came out at almost the same time as Black Sabbath's first album, and I didn't like either band back then. Over the years, I came to appreciate Sabbath and Ozzy, but not Bloodrock!

I've been hearing about this song for more than 50 years, but this is the first time I've actually heard it. "Dark and creepy" they said. "Unsettling and disturbing". "Alice Cooper wishes he was this horrible". "Mandatory listening for Halloween". "Don't play this near your kids". "Scared the snit out of me". "Rob Zombie's golden oldie". Somehow, they forgot to mention "Really f'ing cool ! " Thank you.

The song was written in kind of a means of healing. When the guitarist for the band was a teenager, he watched a friend of his die in a plane crash couple hundred feet from the ground at the airport, a plane he himself had just been in that his friend flew. It messed him up for a long time, so he wrote the song to try to get it out. The perspective of one of the victims as he slowly dies.

This song was played all the time when it was released. At least on our AM station kriz in Arizona.
And the year it was released a good friend of mine and his brothers (5) all lost their lives in a car crash late one Friday night. So I can't hear the song without that coming to mind.
Perhaps worse because I was on scene of the accident. Although not the first time I had dealt horrific accidents and death, it was the first time with anyone I had known.
Of course this was about an airplane accident. And I had already been flying gliders before this. And a year after this song was released I had my pilot's license and was doing search and rescue.
The lyrics about the attendance face being pale as it could be is pretty accurate. The images seen never leave your mind. At the time you do what's needed. Then afterwards you grow silent, reflect and cry.

I shouldn't have listened. My most haunting memory was a woman in the passenger seat whose legs had been amputated in the accident. Despite my screaming on the radio for a evacuation helicopter it never came in time. Neither did the equipment needed to extract her from the vehicle. Three of us were trying to hold her from convulsing when she grabbed me and stared at me scared and crying. At that point all I could do was pray with her while she faded away.

I'm a very big bloodrock fan since DOA came out on KAAY the Mighty 1090am on Little Rock's BEAKER STREET that played lp cuts in 1970 and on. I once talked to the keyboardist Steve Hill for a whole hour about ten years ago. We talked about the bands eclectic style. The shorten song was a hit on top 40 radio. Steve was a big proggier/fusion guy. Their last 3 lps were more progressive. Though each lp has great stuff. Sadly Stevie died of cancer later.
Here's a great freaky video from an earlier lp of theirs.

Wasn’t this record the perfect Christmas gift for a suicidally depressed thirteen year old girl? This went perfectly with my new portable record player I thought it meant that my new stepmother hated me. This was the only record I got! I always assumed this was a drunk driving song. This was the first time I have willingly heard it in nearly fifty years, and it surprised me at how well done the music was. Oh well. Time passes, and at least I got to hear ‘I Can See Clearly Now’’ first! God Bless You, sweet Daniel, now and always.

I'm slightly cynical about this song. Just discovered it. On the one hand, it feels like a gimmick. Shocking for the sake of shock value and getting attention. On the other hand, the song is 8 minutes. That's a no-go for radio stations. Even the condensed 5(ish) minutes is a big ask. Add in the lyrics and you'd think this song would be radio poison. That kind of throws the "looking for attention" thing out the window. Hard to pay attention to a song you don't know exists.
I think this song, mainly the lyrics, are shocking just for the sake of shocking. I don't, however, think they were attempting to make a hit song here. I'm shocked this made it to the radio. I'm sure they were too.

"According to Bloodrock guitarist Lee Pickens, the origin of the song is about an airplane incident he encountered when he was a teenager.
'When I was 17, I wanted to be an airline pilot. I had just gotten out of this airplane with a friend of mine, at this little airport, and I watched him take off. He went about 200 feet in the air, rolled and crashed.'
The band decided to write a song about the incident and it was featured on their sophomore album.
The song peaked at #36 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971, but many radio stations and high schools in the United States banned the song due to its content."

Everyone thinks this is about a plane crash. I think it was a song about teenagers driving too fast and didn't see what they ran into.

Do the research. It's definitely about a plane crash. One of the band members witnessed it.

I saw this band twice. One headline in a parking garage and a few months later opening for Grand Fuck Railroad. One hit wonders. Other songs were uptempo.

BLOOD ROCK, "DOA". NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD EVER HEAR THIS ON REACTIONS. THAT BEING SAID. I REMEMBER THIS BEING BANNED FROM THE RADIO AIR WAYS. GRAFFIC AUTO ACCIDENT SONG. SIRENS I ASSUME ARE THE AMBULANCE... Got people's attention. A lot of cruising and partying in cars drinking, and drugs I suppose in Highschool, and College.

1971. It really freaked me out when I heard it. BTW there is a whole genre of teenage death songs in the early to mid 1960s.

IF A SONG CAN CAUSE NIGHTMARES----- JUST BE PREPARED FOR IT TO HAPPEN TO YOU.
First heard this song when my oldest brother bought album when I was 12-13........... AND I STILL CANNOT LISTEN TO IT AT AGE 62

Yeah, I first heard this at age 14 and had nightmares for quite a while. I revisit it every once in a while and it is still as creepy as it was back then. We'll see how I sleep tonight.

I said before I saw this band at Curtis Hall in Tampa. They were the main event. But the opening bands are worth mentioning. First was steam followed by the Bob Seger system followed by the MC5. Then bloodrock. Steam got booed off the stage. MC5 was good but got in trouble because the singer was putting his hand down in his pants, but the Bob Seger system was fantastic, they had a hit song at the time called rambling gambling Man. To this day I believe the Bob Seger system was the best incarnation of Bob seger's bands. They did the entire tales of Lucy blue album which is a great album, one you should react to. It's a much more hard rock album than anything else Bob Seger has ever done, you would be really surprised
