Thanks for the awesome video of Sandy Beach! I live in Las Vegas for a long time now but I used to go there and/or Makapu'u Beach Park every day for years in the 80s and early 90s. I miss body surfing those waves a lot.
I moved away from Oahu to Washington State back in 2019 but from 1997 to when I moved, I lived in HK and I practically was raised at Sandy's. I learned to respect the power of the currents, the shore break and the risk you take every single time you go out.
The scariest thing about Sandy's is that it doesn't even have to be huge to be dangerous.
But I will say as a long time body surfer, there is no other beach on the island I enjoyed more than Sandy's. And why would I need to go anywhere else on the island when I lived right up the road from here? 3 minute drive to Sandy's from home? Shooootz. Going Sandy's. Maks was a solid second option to me but I much preferred Sandy's on almost any given day. Thanks for posting this. I miss Sandy's.
I live in Mosier, Oregon now, in da Columbia River Gorge, 5 m E of Hood River. Born n raised in Kailua .. Kawainui cuzz !! Watching this just now was "da flashback" too da MAX ! Cut class buku times fo surf n hit Sandies n Maks in jr high till I got my first kneeboard in 8th grade - a Lightning Bolt twin fin box skeg .. I wuz da 'half man' getting dropped in on aaaaaall da time just cause of dat. My brother was in 9th grade n got his license so Country bound aftah dat, aah !! Garth Hardin on utube fo see me eating shit on my mtn bike n taking trail-side naps n downhill trails n jumps in Post Canyon. K den !
What makes it dangerous if the waves aren’t real big
@JohnSmith-dm1wo The shore break. You can catch a wave but literally can smack straight into the sand. People break bones at this beach. I never did. But it's always something to be aware of! 🤙🤙
I’m a newbie. If you just lay on your board and catch the top and go straight, won’t you always have water under you when the wave pushes you.

One time back in 2006 I dawn patrolled Sandy’s on a day this big before class, no one out or even on the beach. still remember the thumping I took on the very first wave.
I'm too scared to ever go in the water at Sandys. I give Obama credit for being able to enter the water there and not die.
