- Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - 1996 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Long Program - Tara Lipinski of the United States redeemed herself here after a disastrous skate in the Short Program. She hit all of her elements and placed 11th. She ended moving up from 23rd to 15th Place overall.
13 years old and her World senior debut and all I can say is Wow !! and I loved her choice of music from the movie soundtracks Speed and the Prince of Tides.
She should go to the kid's Olympics with her Disney Cartoon program at 1998 .
Tara Lipinski is one of my all-time favorite female Figure skaters. She absolutely knocked this program out of the park!
She was so adorable! I really enjoyed that program.
This is the ONLY Lipinski program I have ever liked. She was absolutely magnificent!
Good grief this had 90s written all over it and I LOVED it! From the soundtrack score music of SPEED to the lovely big bangs and the puffy babydoll dress sleeves that were really in style around that time 🥰
As a HUGE Kwan fan, I have tremendous respect for Tara's talent. Tara recently gave an interview and she said that she was always grateful she got to compete against "one of the greatest skaters of all time," and it was something she never took lightly. She was talking about Michelle Kwan. And on her ice network commentary, she mentioned that she knew she needed to up her technical levels b/c "I knew how great Michelle was." So Tara does not strike me as nasty at all.
Michelle Kwan shares my birthday. Fun Fact
She isn't nasty - she is very kind.
Elizabeth Hurley omg and mine you lol
@@debsam77 What language are you attempting to communicate in?
@@elizabethhurley1129 Yes, I agree what you said that Tara is nice.
13 years old and she threw down an amazing performance.
Tara had a kid's body and weight so easier to jump, when she grew up then she was nothing.
She had the best "face" in all of skating. The joy, ease, looking off in the distance with wonder. Part of what made her a joy to watch. Every skater can take a note from her on this. Great fluid arms as well.
Flat edges/flutz roller skate technique - ruined the sport
Tara was a Peter Pan, she should go to the kid's Olympics.
@@beckys979 And people couldn't ask more artistry of a kid like Tara.
SHE LOOKS BEAUTIFUL and her hair😍
So youthful.
Wait I did not know she stated ice skating at 9 and went to worlds at 13. That is impressiveee. Wow
The Speed Theme. So random. I love it so much. Hilarious. Who skates to the Speed Soundtrack. Amazing
Tanja Szewczenko of Germany had a gorgeous program using the soundtrack to Speed, and she successfully interpreted it as well as the content. It was during her comeback in 97 after injury and her illness, and was basically one of the top skaters that season.
It's from the jumping technique roller skaters use. She was a roller skater before switching over to ice.
Look at this little beauty 🥰
I think I like this program better than her "Rainbow" performance at the 98" Olympics. Which says alot! Awesome performance - I like her speed with conviction and her confident beautiful moves!
Tara didn't deserve the Olympics gold because her performance just like a Disney cartoon.
She was like a deer in the headlights in the short porgram, consideirng her age and inexperience was understandable. It was about experience, and she showed a lot of character by rebounding here. Not a big jumper but she rotated so quickly she could still complete the rotation and she was always fun to watch.
IMO Tara's best overall performance. The music choice really pairs well with Tara's speed and youthful exuberance and adds a layer of competitive intensity rather than just coming off as "cute and fun" (which I think worked against her scoring in '95 Nationals)
Tara's not Michelle..nor Lu Chen.. There's no one like Tara either.. She has a WoW factor to her skating that's beyond words and definitely has a huge place in the sport of Figure Skating..
Michelle and Lu Chen were artists on ice, Tara was nothing more than a jumper. That's so different.
Back in the day, I couldn't stand her because she was a threat to Kwan and I was a hardcore Team Kwan fan. Now I can appreciate the speed, flow and ease with which she did some of the hardest moves.
Even so, Tara still didn't deserve to win the Olympics because her performance just like a Disney cartoon.
@@TT-ee4qp give it up.
@@alazjaw.8968 Tara's flip and lutz would be called out for under rotation today.
Without a kid's body and weight, Tara did ZERO triple combo.
Give it up.😆
@@alazjaw.8968 The ISU raised the age limit to 17 NOW , which means Tara didn't deserve to win and she should go to the kid's Olympics with her Disney Cartoon program.
Give it up.🤣
@@TT-ee4qp confused what now has to do with the rules back then. you simply hate her. commenting under everyone’s comment with the same thing.
I wonder how Tara would get scored under the new system for her jumps? I mean they are smaller here than Satoko's.
Under the new system, the ISU raised the age limit to 17 NOW , which means Tara and the Russian girls today all should go to the kid's Olympics.
Just adorable
.....nothing more.
I believe I'm the only one here for the Speed Soundtrack
WOW.
Easily a top 10 performance had she hit her SP, but it made her win in 97 even more dramatic.
What was her music in this LONG Skate program? Because it sounds like the theme music from the movie SPEED to me - but I could be wrong....
No, you're correct.
Такая крошка, а столько эмоций, столько драйва!!! Чемпионское катание!!!
Just a kid.
Tara was always a joy to watch skate/She reminded us that skating was Fun not just art.
Tara had no artistry so her performance just like a Disney cartoon for fun.
So what exactly were the age requirements for singles ladies back in this period? Currently don't we have age restrictions, set by the ISU, to compete at the senior level? (i wanna say you must be 15 or turning 15 by a certain date that year but I have no idea if this is accurate, if I'm conflating different sports or if an age requirement only applies to the olympics or is set by each country's Ice skating federation, etc.).
I only ask cause 13 seems so incredibly young to be skating a the seniors level. It just seems odd to have someone who's really still a kid, no matter how great their skating (and Tara's is excellent obviously) competing against someone in their mid to late 20's.
You are correct about the age restrictions currently...but back then there wasn't any. She was way ahead of her time.
@@nicolassanabria4386 It's a joke that Tara was ahead of her time, Tara's performance just like a happy puppy or a Disney cartoon. (≧ω≦)/
@@nicolassanabria4386 Tara fell again and again by the incorrect triple triple combo before the 1998 Olympics, she was a lucky kid , she was unstable and overrated. Michelle Kwan pushed the sport forward, not Tara.

This was a terrific skate but she was known for her jumping ability rather than her artistry. Michelle's programs were a helluva lot more complete than Tara's
she would get zonked for those under rotations and incorrect edges under the COP.
@@vistaprime Actually, Tara would be a bad jumper if she grew up without a kid's body and weight.
What a wonderful end of the 90 s figure skating ear
Beautiful.
You are very good at misunderstanding statements and responding with non-arguements. Good luck in life.
It's very sad that people use youtube to put down skaters they don't like. What's the point?
I wish the ISU would change the minimum age for the world championships to 18 instead of 16. You can easily see, that at age 13, this looks like " little girl" skating....not ladies.
I don’t know... I see your point... but imagine if that rules was in place in the 80’s. Then Gordeeva and Grinkov wouldn’t have been able to compete until the start of the 89’-90’ season. Imagine the shame of missing out on that.
@@pamelahermano9298 The ISU raised the age limit to 17 NOW, which means Tara and the Russian girls today all should go to the kid's Olympics.

Amazing ❤
I totally forgot she competed at the senior worlds at 13. I see why they have a age requirement now. It looks very strange for a little girl to be competing against women. In my opinion that's the only reason why she did so well because she was a child with such a tiny frame. I don't think she would have been dominate if she continued skating especially once she hit puberty and had the dreaded growth spurt. She was smart to retire.
She ended up quitting skating all together by 19/20 because of hip problems/injuries she encountered over the years from too many repetitions of 3-3 combos with the 3Lo as the 2nd jump.
She hit puberty and a growth spurt before the Olympics and she did just fine. She won, not only because she was technically superior, but because she skated with such joy. No ultra-dramatic angst - just joy.
@@3Axel1996 Like I said she was smart to retire. Skating shows and the few professional competitions she did was not like competing in the Grand Prix.

She is cute and make smile along her program. The joy while she was skating is the best and she jump with confidence
What can I say ? Tara was nothing more than a kid.....
She was the third one to skate that night.
After that short program, she went out on to that ice for blood!!! Say what you want, but, that's the kind of spirit that makes a champion. And why she's an Olympic gold medallist!
Tara had a kid's body and weight, that's why Tara was overrated.

@@TT-ee4qp Tara beat Michelle in 1998..... Michelle lost at BOTH olympics. Get over it
Does anyone know the name of the jump she did right after the last combination (2Axel/3Salchow)? It looked like a single jump - almost like a transition move.
A One Foot Axel. Normally you will land on the foot you take off/enter with, but with the one foot Axel, you land on the foot opposite the one used for the take off/entry.
3Axel1996 Thank you. It is an interesting-looking move - I wonder why it isn't used more often. Thanks for all the videos you post - very enjoyable.
I consider her a WoW factor for being gutsy with her jumps. I don't think she's cute or aadorable. I think she looks like a teenager who's not afraid to compete. By the way.. Alot of skaters have attitude towards rivals. It's comes in any world of competing against one another.
Dick and Peggy are so enamoured with their american compatriot and she is young and amazing but her jumps were small. And as expected at 13 still room to grow.
What a performance! I love everything about it-- sure, she had things to improve (who doesn't?), but for a 13 year old, wow.
BTW, her jumps wouldn't have been downgraded, Tal. Although, you're correct that now she would get a wrong edge deduction, but saying something like that is a little like saying "people from the 1800s would get made fun of for wearing their clothing these days." It's a new era in judging (and not for the better, by the way).
A kid like Tara was good at jump , nothing else.
@@TT-ee4qp , to each their own.
a mi me encanto es maravilloso como patina
She is no MIchelle Kwan but she put in a good skate, Michelle Kwan's skating is mesmerizing and I would rather watch her than most female skaters.
Unfortunately Kwan was a very entitled skater. She did not push the sport forward and she expected gifts from the judges. She was a beautiful skater but only once, the 1996 worlds did she seize the moment. At the 1998 Olympics Lipinski ripped the gold medal out of Kwan’s hands. As Sumner said, everybody in the arena knew who had won after Tara skated before the scores went up. After Ito and Yamaguchi retired the two ladies who pushed the envelope won Olympic Gold. 1994 was the worst year for women ever. Baiul barely did a combination. But Lipinski and Hughes won because they took it. No gifts. Kwan (and Slutskaya ugh) and her family thought the judges were Santa.

Great skating, Tara!! I'm such a fan of hers, I even print nice pics of her at work- using my company's color printer!! Haw haw!!!!!
A great skate from a lady who spent that entire season in the shadows of a certain skater who waltz-jumped (literally) to "victory" and adoration from international judges. Luckily, in the next two years, the judges caught on to the special talent oozing from our Tara.
the only thing lipinski ever oozed is snot
Tal Mamatov Saying things like this just invalidates all your other worthless opinions.

Tal Mamatov you have a very unpleasant way of expressing yourself.
a "certain" skater? Huh. There always has to be a "republican" and a 'democrat'. It may seem hard to believe but Michelle Kwan was 13 at her first Worlds and she kicked ass as well. Three years later she was World Champion... she didn't jump over anyone... Lipinski won the next year. What is your damage?
@JNagarya Also, are you a six year old? Just because someone else says something bad about Michelle Kwan doesn't mean you have to be nasty towards Tara... ??? Bizarre behavior.

No wonder I always found her jumping annoying and weird. She jumps like a roller skater would jump. Over hyped and over scored especially at the olympics.
