Thanks for this upload GR. There a lot of opinions of who is the best Holmes and Watson here but if you are a Brit watching this, nostalgia comes into play and watching Cushing doing anything just gives a super warm feeling. Maybe not the best Holmes but who cares, he is a bastion of British acting in the 50's - 80's!!!!!!
Personally, I think that attitudes had changed enough that a colder and purely intellectual Holmes was more acceptable by the time Brett played him. Brett is the most accurate to the Conan Doyle Holmes. When Rathbone played Holmes, a more traditional hero was expected. One who could handle action well and who was more capable of warmth and homour. Bruce's Watson was turned into the comic relief, because movies at that time were expected to offer the entire entertainment package. I think that Cushing's natural kindness does show through a little in his performance, but he is such a talented and professional actor that it's not a problem, just an inevitability. In other words, Cushing is temperamentally unsuited to play the part, but also has the talent to still play it.

It's before SF became yuppie central. Before it turned into an excrement covered dump. Many feature to like.
@@stanthology Very good movie! But I am not sure, if he is the drunk guy, are you sure?
Its Jeremy Brett and Jeremy Brett only... He lived the character.
I still don't understand why Brett is so acclaimed to this day....
Legendas, meu amigo.
Se conseguir vai ser ótimo.
Obrigado pelos vídeos
Em breve colocarei legendas nos outros também! =D
Roberto Rego I agree amigo 😁
Caro Roberto, eu acabei de fazer as legendas para esse episódio de Sherlock Holmes O Signo dos Quatro, dê uma olhada aqui no meu canal! Um abraço!
Ha, Ha! Darjeeling tea is very expensive tea.
I need to taste this tea!
if the accomplice climbed up the ladder to get through the hole in the roof... how did the ladder get back over to the wall...
omg Hindi! good to hear my mother tongue
howtoplanaparty ummmm what
What did they say?
Major Shoto must have practiced for his hookah smoking role by imitating the Caterpillar in Disney's Alice in Wonderland. I like it! 18:57 The Hindu statue is a hoot as he looks like he's using a mudra to tweak her nipple! I swear the Hindu acolytes must have been admonished never to lie down with each other - so they sit up -stand up- and everything else under the Indian sun and moon.
Interesting!
The young lady who played the "maid" was the best actor on the set. She was real. The rest were reading their lines. Not a good example of British acting.
howtoplanaparty Acting 😂
Yes it's truly awful, but vastly entertaining as a result.
Private investigator Sherlock Holmes 😎
The one and only!
Peter Cushing was an excellent Holmes but I still prefer Ronald Howard. With that said this was an excellent production.
I need to see also Ronald Howard's interpretation! :o
I do like this episode but being based on a novel, it should have been spread over two episodes. The ending was completely different in the book and the BBC episode should have included this.
This version has strayed significantly from the original Sir ACD's version. Good show, but why not show Dr Watson proposing to Mary??
Basil rathbone .. For ever..
Jeremy brett is the best
Watson makeing her uncomfortable by staring at her. he is NOT to smart.
I like this pair as Holmes and Watson.....Cushing is (heresy!!) better than Rathbone.
Baker Street Irregulars, meet me fair and square for debate or jiu jitsu .....your choice
" ...Cushing is (heresy!!) better than Rathbone." No, he ain't; heresy indeed - sacrilege!!
Bartitsu, surely!
To be quite frank, not that there's anything wrong with it, Cushing appears to be a little too gay for my taste.
aikigeorge3 Shape up or ship out or put a sock in it your choice 🐮
howtoplanaparty, I suppose it is unobjective (if the word exists), but everyone is allowed to have their own personal opinions, or at least I should hope they are. I personally prefer Jeremy Brett and David Burke as Holmes and Watson, but other people are entirely free to express their own views.
Mee
Pleased
Peter Cushing is not in the same class as Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone. Any Watson is better than Nigel Bruce--too old, too fat, too stupid. Watson as portrayed by Bruce offered no help to Holmes.
To this day I still don't understand why Brett is so acclaimed!
Can't hold a candle to Jeremy Brett
A torch then, maybe? A burning bush?
rubbish. Peter Cushing is a much better Holmes.
Gregoryt700 Stick a sock in it and be of with you ya bonded serf.
Agreed, Jeremy Brett is the man, this is terrible acting
Shirley! You jest!
Ronald Lacey is a much better Sholto.
I quite prefer this one!
Jeremy Brett is Holmes and Ian Richardson is Dr. Bell.
I don't like Peter in this.
I still don't understand why Brett is so acclaimed to this day....
@@marcolinoviolinistaI think it's due to he made the most shows movies whatever you want to call them so that made him more popular cuz that's what people saw more of
Jeremy Bretts was better any days!!!
Nahhh nahhh I love Cushing's Holmes but this ending alteration is....🐕💩
Cushing was very good as Holmes-I always thought that Douglas Wilmer and Nigel Stock were excellent.....Brett over-eggs the part with his overacting.
Oh, good grief. Doctor Watson (Nigel Stock) acted like a freaking masher after meeting the girl. Heck, the whole show (acting, actors, costumes, sets, etc) was over-the-top. I quit watching after only 15 minutes. Couldn't take any more.
Dwight Stewart you're right, but it's amazingly funny all the same ... And do tell me, what is a "masher"??
Masher (noun); A man who is aggressive in making amorous advances to women.
Watson wouldn't have looked like a masher had they not changed the ending of the story once again! The lady in question here was (in the original stories) the future Mrs. Watson!
James .. Ah, I see. However, I'm afraid this Watson, at least at the beginning, would have still looked a masher all the same. LOL.
The exact opposite. He's acting like an interested gentleman suitor that's behaving suitably.
poor film of sherlock Holmes played by Peter Cushing he must have been short of Money as it it very poor
Brian Neale I gather you do not like Mr Cushing 😁
I did like Peter Cushing when he was alive as he was a very good actor but in this film this part did not suit him as i think that script was very poor
I read on IMDB that Cushing hated this series because the production team were very last minute and unprofessional
Basil Rathborne was the one and only Sherlock Holmes followed by Jeremy Brett. I'm afraid that Peter Cushing was a poor Sherlock Holmes
of course Rathbone is absolutely better than Cushing in this role ... Cushing is a giant but in this role
Rathbone is THE one. And this Watson is a nothing in front of Watson playing with Rathbone... This watson here playing the in love moron is very unpleasant to see.
