Blends are groups of two or three consonants that are pronounced together without a vowel sound between them. They can appear at the beginning, middle, or end of a word.
Examples of blends:
Initial blends: bl-, cl-, fl-, gl-, pl-, sl-, sm-, sn-, sp-, st-, sw- (blending board, clean, flag, glow, plot, slide, small, snow, spot, stand, swim)
Medial blends: mb-, -nd-, -ng-, -nk-, -st-, -mp-, -sk-, -sp-, -ld-, -nt (climb, sand, sing, sink, nest, lamp, desk, wasp, gold, tent)
Final blends: ft-, -lk-, -mp-, -nd-, -ng-, -nk-, -st (draft, milk, lamp, sand, swing, sink, fast)
Blends are an important part of phonics, and children need to learn to recognize and decode them in order to read fluently. There are many ways to teach blends to children, including using games, songs, and flashcards.
Here are some tips for teaching blends to children:
Start with initial blends. Initial blends are the easiest for children to learn because they are the first consonants they hear in a word.
