I don't think it's a "song fact" that Freddie was thinking of football when he wrote it. It's clearly about his own experiences as an aspiring rock musician. He most definitely was NOT tailoring this song for sporting events.
Nah but they just started discovering Queen, so I feel like it'd be too early for TSMGO. It wouldn't have the same effect on them as if they listened to at least a few more albums (especially the last 2)
Neither this nor We Will Rock You were written specifically for playing at games, but Freddie had football (soccer) in mind when he wrote it. He wanted an audience participation anthem like a chant at sporting events.
As far as you getting close to 80, it's all you! The vibe is great and this 50 year old white lady loves it when younger people react to the music I grew up on. Dressing like Madonna and listening to hair bands. Lol. Now I hear my music played in the grocery store. Lol. You two are the first channel I check out whenever I log on to youtube. At running the risk of sounding like your moms I'm proud of you and I know you'll go a lot farther than where you are right now. Guaranteed! ❤
I always thought it interesting that 3 songs, that sound nothing alike & were written by 3 different men (1-Freddy, 2-Brian, 3-John), each became iconic sports anthems. It's really a testament to the amazing, individual talents in that group.
Love this one too! Even today, most classic rock stations I know will play We will rock you and this back to back with no commercial and not even a station ID. It's almost mandatory.
Yeah, I remember when they always used to play them back to back on the radio. I think We Will Rock You was the A side and We Are the Champions was the B side when the singles were released.
When this tune was still popular and on the radio a lot, it was always paired with "We Will Rock You." You always heard them together like they were two parts of the same track. Freddie Mercury was an amazingly talented singer and musician, but he is also one of the most legendary rock and roll front men. If you haven't already, check out the Live Aid video. That performance shows his true mastery of working with a crowd. In fact, there's a 53 second clip from the 20+ minute performance titled "EEEEEOOOOOO" that shows it all. In between songs, he led the massive crowd in an extended , complex call-and-response that is just breathtaking. Guys, in terms of my own musical tastes, I'm an old school blues and jazz fan. I love rock and roll too, and the Beatles will always be my first love, but I've never been a great fan of rock from the 70s and 80s - most of it felt overblown, overwrought, self-important, and kind of dull to me. Queen was one of the exceptions, and my appreciation for their music has only increased as I've gotten older. Some music I look back on and think, "Uh, why did I like this when I was a kid?" or some other similar question. Queen is an example of an artist who, when I look back at, only seems to improve.
Not specifically written for sporting events. The band wanted something that their audiences could participate in, so Freddie came up with 'We are the Champions' and Brian 'We Will Rock You.'
Oh yeah. My school played this a LOT. Whenever one of our sports teams won the championship this was played. Proud to say my varsity softball got to hear this twice!
Freddie mercury wrote the majority of his songs and also collaborated with band members.we are the champions was not written for sports but for people in general about their own self worth on how you feel about your self.
When you said they are sports songs technically yes but they are were considered as stadium songs a lot of groups did songs like that that were for crowds of 70,000 Plus
You guys should check out some of the funkier Queen tunes, such as "Fun It" or "Dragon Attack"! Another hit by them, but hardly ever heard anymore is "Need Your Loving Tonight".
The biggest testament to this amazing band's music is despite Freddie passing away thirty years ago come Nov 24th 2021. The music and his command of the crowd and his voice will survive us all far into the future.
Half and Jai, check out Queens Live Aid performance from 1985. One of the greatest live performances ever and in front of a huge crowd and they have the whole crowd in the palm of their hands.
It was written for those of us being champions of social cause, champions of our environment, champions of ourselves. The sports world later adopted the song because it fits what ever finals winner there is.
this was our song when in the weight / strength / condition room for wrestling and foot ball....don't know how much l lifted over those four years to this song. i think every high school had this cranked in the gym !!! this came out in the 1970's when i was in high school...far as i know only written for the art of music...not the sports :) thanks for the memories !!! typhoon out.
this is the other half to Another One Bites The Dust. They say Freddie/the band wrote tihis after Bohemian Rhapsody was a hit, for a record producer who said they would never make it.
No they didn't write it for sports although it lend itself to sport events...It was written by Freddie about their struggle to become successful and the hard work it took to get there.. for example their first record label taking most of their earnings...Brian at first didn't want them to do this song because he thought the critics would think it was arrogant..but Freddie's 'I' was also "we" -all of us who have struggled hard to achieve our goals.
Observational comment on the effect of music. When the video started, I thought Half was in the dog house because Jai was not smiling and very serious. Freddie starts singing and Jai busts out with a big ol' smile! ohhh and Jai had the sexy flowing locks..... Half outta the dog house because of music! maybe....lol

“We Will Rock You” before the game, and “We Are The Champions” after the game. So iconic.
