The 85 is better than the 42. It has ball bearings so it’s a lot smoother, and it has a magnetic latch so it will never need to be replaced. The 42 is cast titanium so it has more imperfections.
BHQ, love you guys for doing this, I had zero interest in this knife until you guys made this video and did an awesome interview and editing job. You guys even got some flipping footage. Thanks guys great job
I still dont see the need for s30v steel. Most people dont cut boxes with $600 balisongs. Recreate the 42 and they will sell like hotcakes, an anniversary edition with thrust bearings if possible.
Agreed. It would retail for much more that 300. A Benchmade 63 goes for 375 so if they actually brought back the 42 it would go for around 400$ give or take. The 42 was a GODLY flipper when it was new and forward but nowdays there are options that is better flippers. It was the best for its time but now its just overrated.
You are 100% wrong i have this knife number 20 out of 400 and i use this at work to cut the plastic and tape off pallets every single day and its still sharp 3 years after i got it
I just bought one. Got it from the factory shop. My favourite knife by far. For everyone who complains about price - go buy a Kia. For everyone who complains about new design - go get a flip phone.
I actually really like this knife. I would buy one if I wasn’t on a budget in a second. With that said i am all for bringing back the 42. I just don’t see how you can compare the 42 to stuff like the replicant. I’ve flipped both, and am admittedly a novice, but I’d take the 42 my buddy had over a Rep any day.
I get the price, and while I might not really agree with it I don't think they're insane or anything. I just don't think that introducing a $600 bali in this market is appropriate or competitive. BRS is putting out models that, while not cheap, are definitely doable for most of the casual-to-serious level community. This is simply not that. Basically, it looks like a really well designed knife, but I don't know who it's marketed towards. The back half says high end bali, the front side says mid tier edc, and the price says full custom.
Right now you can get it off bladeHQ for $450 which I think is reasonable and I would buy it right now if not for the fact that I don’t even have a live blade or anything aside from a $5 trainer off amazon and i might regret not buying it later because I really like the 87 but I’m getting off track personally I like the 87 at least the look and concept of it I’ve never seen one in real life or flipped one but $450 seems reasonable to me for what it is considering how expensive and hard to do titanium is
510-600$ for a "Performance" Bali? Nah...that's a "collectible" price. 275-400$ is a "performance" Bali price... we buy performance for the sake of smoothness and therefore hopefully dropping it on the ground less. But we're still flippers. We are GOING to drop it every now and then. 510-600$ is not something you drop and pick up like it's no big deal... Still wish I could have it. But the price is far more than any relevant flipper is willing to pay. IMO
Balisong community: Hey what are the materials? Bench made: 440c stainless steel. Balisong community: oh, not bad. What are the handles? Bench made: Titanium :D Balisong community: *facepalm*
Oh man. This thing looks serious. I've wanted a Benchmade 43 for like 15 years. Do they still make those? I have a Morpho from when they were first released around...2004? Great knife, not an easy flipper though.
I have always wanted one, and just recently got my first Benchmade Balisong; it's an old lightly used 48s, with partial serrations, hidden hardware, and the balisong stamp, etc. Do you have any information about it? I've tried to do some research and only come up with they are rather scarce and rare. Second question: Will the compression pouch ever be sold independently as an accessory?
Wow, now that's a butterfly knife. I am just a novice who opens and closes mine. But to watch that guy work this knife to what it can do was way impressive. By the way what was that big honking cigarette lighter looking thingy in the middle of the table that no one addressed?
so yes we all wanted a titanium bali but not this ill still get one tho this might sell more if it was styled like 4x series billet handle and ball bearings idk about the magnet latch looks cool tho id pay 1000+ if it was like that cant waint to get my hands on one
im not really able to justify spending 450-600 on a balisong. i flip my balis i dont really use them(what most people do anyway). i am interested in flipping it. maybe try a pass around or something. but i cant say its better or not. personally i prefer brs a bit more but im open to try new knives. i bitched a lot when i saw the msrp. but if that is what its worth so be it. all i care for is the flippability. and since dave said it flipped like a rep(rep is my favorite flipper at the moment) it made me more interested in the 87.
going to have to save some coin to get one to replace my EDC, which I purchased in 1988 or 1989. Yup, I am one of the lucky few that still own a model 42.
I thought the whole reason they discontinued the 42 was because of the price of titanium...so why are they making this full titanium piece of shit instead of the 42???
yeah but magnets themselves dont actually last forever. They lose it over time from drops and even higher temps, is there a way to replace the magnets?
I love my 87. It's milled handles are better than the cast 42 handles. Why buy a 42 that's probably a clone when you can get this. No bladeplay in mine. People act like the 42 is the only bali benchmade made back then. I have all the 30 series bali's and they are cool but the hype is overrated. The 87 is simply their best bali to date!
PizzaStuffs Well they put a lot of money on material, research, marketing, and so on. They use high quality machinery to make the knife and remember that it's a big chunk of Titanium and they gotta make so money to pay the bills. (And remember that it's U.S.A. made)
DabidMN look... stop spreading hate on other. Benchmade is a great compagny who made good knife (Benchmade 42, The 940 Osborne, the Griptilian, the mini-griptilian and so on) don't deserve to have people bashing on them because the knife is 600$ If you can't affort it, no problem, but if you come and spread hate when you never handle it, that's not okay.
I love the blade shape and handle design, but I will not buy it cause the price. Spending $600 from retail or $510 from Blade hq website, I will rather choose BRS or Microtech techyon III. At least I can save more money for other stuff.
Also, Benchmade, since you’ll read my comment and all, the Chinese clone market sells 42s like fucking crazy. And there are some GOOD clones out there. Twenty bucks on DHgate and a little tuning and I’ve had some really nice ones.
that is decent steel but not that great. i expected a v-10 or h1 steal for that price. but for a bali maybe the prices are different i usually only get folders. i do like the razor blade shape. like a wharncliffe or a razel
Fear has kept me from owning a Balisong / Butterfly knife, and I expect that will not change in the near future. I might as well juggle running chainsaws while riding a unicycle blindfolded on a high wire over a minefield.
Damn, this comment section has a lot of bitching. There are so many considerations that make the knife as expensive as it is. It's MSRP too. More places are going to sell it for 510. Amazing blade steel, the manufacturing process is expensive with machining tools wearing down on titanium and the time it takes to do it, innovative latch, ball bearings (hoping this reduces handle play). All things considered, this is a premium knife. Bali flipping is an expensive hobby to get into, if you've been around, you wouldn't be surprised seeing amazing knives sell for close to 400, 450. And the 4x series is overrated, don't bring it back. It's design is outdated and outclassed by current performance balisongs. Calm the fuck down, people
mrblue251 couldn't have said that better myself!! People need to stop bitching that obviously have no idea the cost that actually goes into producing these knives. Its true that u are paying for the name on the knife but that Benchmade name means that ur gonna get some of the best quality around as far as steel, construction, and attention to detail. Like he mentioned in the video that Benchmade is in the upper echelon of knife manufacturers bc of those reasons that I listed.
I bet this knife costs maximum 60$ to Benchmade. The proof will come in some months when the Chinese guys will start to sell it for 50$ (with the same quality).
Can they make a system so we can fully customize a knife that is 500 dollars and lower. Handle metal Bearing or washer Blade steel Blade shape Handle shape Latch style Handle and blade length (to a reasonable degree)
Yes the 42 is amazing. But it's reached a God level of hype and such. If they were to bring it back one it wouldn't be special anymore and two it will never live up to the crazy amazing stigma around it.
I love the methods of construction. But I hate the design. Definitely seems to go after the BRS fans but misses on all the points that make BRS special. And I personally would have never used bearings and simply done bushings.
I had a 42 previously and I thought it was the shit but now that I have the 87 I kinda think the 42 was a bit of a dog by comparison. Having said that I still miss it. I think it would be cool to see a updated 42 with bearing pivots and a magnetic latch with s30v blade steel.
I really thought that this was going to be a bad knife, even tho I was hoping otherwise. But, a channel that flips like a Rep. I'd still rather wait for a Rep drop, but I see this being a good knife.
So it's that expensive because they waste a whole bunch of titanium grinding it from a billet? When people just want the 42 back? Benchmade, what the hell are you doing?
It's still a waste. You can't get every little scrap. Also, my big point is the fact that people really just wanted them to continue with the 42 design. Not make a totally different one. I realize Benchmade wants to be modern, but most of their customers don't want modern designs, it seems.
Wow, ok, I understand that Titanium isn't super cheap, but It only takes 2 hours for you guys to make the handle for a knife? Why not make more? All you freaking do is put the damn block of titanium in there and press a button for the automated machine to machine out the metal... It's kinda frustrating to think that they would end such a successful knife like the 42 when they could make a comeback with it.
Looks like they maybe found a piece of scrap cardboard left over from a cut test and said, “well, there’s a blade shape for our top-of-the-line balisong.”
Bring the 42 back.
Moo-hyun Roh bring moo-hyun roh back
All I wanted was a proper 42. Come on now, Benchmade.
Yeah, what the fuck?
Hanming Shi you should have been into balisongs earlier then you dumb ass
um... you're not the brightest syracruse
I had one and sold it a few years ago not realizing it was discontinued... I'm an idiot.
You're very welcome. Our videographer, Jamie was up until all hours of the morning to get this out to you quick, so we're glad you liked it. -Ben
its like you guys knew exactly what we wanted to see. I looked forward to more videos like this guys peace
hahahaha
Nah the 42 is overrated
I still dont see the need for s30v steel. Most people dont cut boxes with $600 balisongs. Recreate the 42 and they will sell like hotcakes, an anniversary edition with thrust bearings if possible.
yepp lol. people would probably buy pairs of the 42 if they remade it.
9999plato AMEN....
Agreed. It would retail for much more that 300. A Benchmade 63 goes for 375 so if they actually brought back the 42 it would go for around 400$ give or take.

I'm stoked about this
dude, much better now that we actually get to see it, I'm Pumped bro
Big Brown Guy right seems thinner then I thought and wider in profile but I think that blade shave is growing on me
I just bought one. Got it from the factory shop. My favourite knife by far. For everyone who complains about price - go buy a Kia. For everyone who complains about new design - go get a flip phone.
It looks nicer than I thought. ID flip it, wouldnt buy it tho.
Your tutorials have brought me from the standard opening to my current challenge: the Kiss Goodbye. You're the best Calvin
Leis! Of course you are going to buy it.. You have probably already made a down payment on the knife at Bladehq.com
CalviNNation learned a lot of Bali moves from you a long time ago man thanks!
Me too
Whoever put the windows error noise over 2016 is a legend
remaster the 42
Plz
They cant thanks to the iraq war
Nate's model reveiws etc. but they can make the 87?
jaden gutierrez they won’t be able
to make it the same price because of the titanium in armored vehicles
Remanster deez nuts
I actually really like this knife. I would buy one if I wasn’t on a budget in a second. With that said i am all for bringing back the 42. That blade is so wacked out that it's actually awesome. Good upload!
love the blade shape, hope they make a cheaper non titanium version
Seriously why can't they just make the 4x series
*the 4x series with ball bearings
Jackson Porter The 4x series is overrated. Current balisongs are much better in performance and quality.
510-600$ for a "Performance" Bali? Nah...that's a "collectible" price.
275-400$ is a "performance" Bali price...

ninh s w
ninh s Bro HOM Knives are flippers and they are about $500
Id cry. I cried when i dropped my first pm2 lol
When Bear Ops and Benchmade collab on a box-cutter...
How are you everywhere that involves knives?
haaha so fn true and for only 600
Balisong community: Hey what are the materials?
Bench made: 440c stainless steel.
Balisong community: oh, not bad. What are the handles?
Bench made: Titanium :D
Balisong community: *facepalm*
440c is trash tho
Topkek kek not with a proper heat treatment...
Oh man. This thing looks serious. I've wanted a Benchmade 43 for like 15 years. Do they still make those? I have a Morpho from when they were first released around...2004? Great knife, not an easy flipper though.
The pinging noise, and the blade are amazing. I love the sound of titanium pinging.
Knowing dropping magnets makes them weaker I wonder if the latch will hold its charge after being dropped a bunch of times.
I have the exact same concern.
I have always wanted one, and just recently got my first Benchmade Balisong; it's an old lightly used 48s, with partial serrations, hidden hardware, and the balisong stamp, etc. Do you have any information about it? Second question: Will the compression pouch ever be sold independently as an accessory?
Beautiful knives, absolutely phenomenal
That guy dave is insane! Great skills!! Love the vids
REALLY GREAT JOB GUYS!!! looks like a nice piece
Wow, now that's a butterfly knife. I am just a novice who opens and closes mine. But to watch that guy work this knife to what it can do was way impressive. By the way what was that big honking cigarette lighter looking thingy in the middle of the table that no one addressed?
that is a microphone
so yes we all wanted a titanium bali but not this ill still get one tho this might sell more if it was styled like 4x series billet handle and ball bearings idk about the magnet latch looks cool tho id pay 1000+ if it was like that cant waint to get my hands on one
BRS Replicant, Barebones, and Alpha Beast are better!!! The Benchmade 51 Morpho with Flytanium scales are better
"These knives are better than the 87!"
-Guy who has never flipped an 87
barebones sucks, worst purchase EVER
im not really able to justify spending 450-600 on a balisong. i flip my balis i dont really use them(what most people do anyway). i am interested in flipping it. maybe try a pass around or something. but i cant say its better or not. personally i prefer brs a bit more but im open to try new knives. i bitched a lot when i saw the msrp. but if that is what its worth so be it. all i care for is the flippability. and since dave said it flipped like a rep(rep is my favorite flipper at the moment) it made me more interested in the 87.
@Paul Taylor definitely agree.
+Judd You don't even know that yet. Besides, the Barebones hardware is kinda garbage.
That sheath is pretty cool, are they going to be selling just the sheath? Or does anyone know of a similar sheath being sold currently?
I wonder if flytanium will be making alternate blades for this one???
what a beautiful knife
Any chance of delivering this in Brazil Blade HQ?
I just discovered the knife I'll be saving up for 😊
Julian Williams Yeah me too...the Replicant, the Alpha Beast, or the Basilik. Or maybe a Flytanium morpho...
@@SUBtRONiX213 Why not all of them...
Love the overall design and blade shape. But I'd still go for a Tachyon 3 for the price.
I'll buy one for sure once they offer a different blade shape. Balis are stabby stabby no slashy slashy
going to have to save some coin to get one to replace my EDC, which I purchased in 1988 or 1989. Yup, I am one of the lucky few that still own a model 42.
Love it the wharncliffe blade is sweet
Is there any potential of more blade Styles in this 8x series?
Such as the recurve tanto that was on the 67.
I thought the whole reason they discontinued the 42 was because of the price of titanium...so why are they making this full titanium piece of shit instead of the 42???
its because of the molds for the 4x were like bad now or some weird excuse
The problem with magnets replacing the spring, is magnets loose their "magnetism" over time, so how long would the "Spring Latch" actually last?
MysteryMoose knife is guaranteed for life
yeah but magnets themselves dont actually last forever. They lose it over time from drops and even higher temps, is there a way to replace the magnets?
MysteryMoose just send it to Benchmade? free replacement if they lose magnetization. that's what I was implying with my response.
yeah but thats kinda silly, plus i think many people prefer the spring latch? not too sure though, will have to wait and see how BM handles this
Will that pouch be avaliable separately?
What's that black box on the table
fuck if you can mill out an 87 you can start milling 42s instead of casting them
I hope that it at least comes with different blade options
I love my 87. It's milled handles are better than the cast 42 handles. Why buy a 42 that's probably a clone when you can get this. No bladeplay in mine. People act like the 42 is the only bali benchmade made back then. I have all the 30 series bali's and they are cool but the hype is overrated. The 87 is simply their best bali to date!
What would be a good balisong for beginners?
DMD a cheap one a $15 42 knock off. ect.
Can it come polished instead of bead blast? :/
Ill rather eat and pay my bills
Not me because it's a incredible knife
Vinuk57TV no, no no. It is way to much money for something that had no effort put into making.
PizzaStuffs Well they put a lot of money on material, research, marketing, and so on. They use high quality machinery to make the knife and remember that it's a big chunk of Titanium and they gotta make so money to pay the bills. (And remember that it's U.S.A. made)
+Vinuk57TV research. Cute. You're giving them more credit than they deserve. The only Balisong company that deserves money is BRS.
I just wanna know when the first 62 was made so I can kinda time gap these 2
I want a 42 with 87 style blade and ofcourse milled handles
Hey, I was curious. What's the best balisong for a beginner?
Bradley kimura
beautiful,love this.
the 87 and the 85 seem to be some sick shit i hope to own one someday
When will your be able to Buy this ?
When is the next run of 87s coming out??????
Not a huge bench made guy but that knife looks badass
I love the blade shape and handle design, but I will not buy it cause the price. Spending $600 from retail or $510 from Blade hq website, I will rather choose BRS or Microtech techyon III. At least I can save more money for other stuff.
please get a noise canceler for your mic like a deadcat wind muf cause the background noise kills the video
and please learn how to flip that you like your fingers is a lame excuse when you grab the safe handle there are enough tricks you can learn
Also, Benchmade, since you’ll read my comment and all, the Chinese clone market sells 42s like fucking crazy. And there are some GOOD clones out there. Twenty bucks on DHgate and a little tuning and I’ve had some really nice ones.
that is decent steel but not that great. i expected a v-10 or h1 steal for that price. but for a bali maybe the prices are different i usually only get folders. i do like the razor blade shape. like a wharncliffe or a razel
s30v is better than VG10 and H1 (unless you plan to go swimming with it)
when is this knife coming out.
Still like the alphabeast more, magnetic latch is cool tho
Can you get it in a trainer form?
Can someone tell me if this is a double bladed knife?
Fear has kept me from owning a Balisong / Butterfly knife, and I expect that will not change in the near future. I might as well juggle running chainsaws while riding a unicycle blindfolded on a high wire over a minefield.
Scott G honestly it's not that bad. I was terrified myself till I got a 42 knock off. just learn open and close. everything else is useless
buy a trainer youll quickly see how easy it is not to hurt yourself
Just came across this comment, LOL cheered me up. Still no Balisongs for you?
bring the 42 back!
for $100 more you could get a bc midtech from palethius why would I spend $600 on a production bali, but it does look pretty cool
bring the 42 back cmon
Damn, this comment section has a lot of bitching. There are so many considerations that make the knife as expensive as it is. It's MSRP too. More places are going to sell it for 510.
Bog standard s30v and some kind of titanium? yeah that will run you a few hundred dollars
I bet this knife costs maximum 60$ to Benchmade. The proof will come in some months when the Chinese guys will start to sell it for 50$ (with the same quality).
The obvious exaggeration aside, just dont get the knife then.
I can assure you that if I'm exaggerating it's not much.
Can u guys set up in the Philippines pls?
MAKE A NEW 42!
That dude has some skills.
Can they make a system so we can fully customize a knife that is 500 dollars and lower.
Handle metal
Bearing or washer
Blade steel
Blade shape
Handle shape
Latch style
Handle and blade length (to a reasonable degree)
that is a very expensive process, you would be spending upwards of $1000 for something like that at least for now
Will you ship to CA for us in-house flippers?
Yes the 42 is amazing. But it's reached a God level of hype and such. If they were to bring it back one it wouldn't be special anymore and two it will never live up to the crazy amazing stigma around it.
It better be S125v at that price point.
Herb Toker M390
Herb Toker I like M390 because it has a better corrosion resistance than S125V. Still a great steel though.
I love the methods of construction. But I hate the design. Definitely seems to go after the BRS fans but misses on all the points that make BRS special. And I personally would have never used bearings and simply done bushings.
Id rather buy Chinese titanium 42 for $100.
i need a balisong........ i am so poor..... may i have one?
Anyone know why they went for tang pins instead of zen pins?
the 87 looks amazing but the price and benchmade need to do a new trainer
This guy's flipping technicque. Wow!
Just bring the 42 back there is no beating it
Do you know if you will be able to buy sheath
comes with it, and you can usually buy their sheaths
the 42 should be made that way and it should always be forsale and in stock
Why dont they just mill 4x handles instead of casting them?
I had a 42 previously and I thought it was the shit but now that I have the 87 I kinda think the 42 was a bit of a dog by comparison. Having said that I still miss it. I think it would be cool to see a updated 42 with bearing pivots and a magnetic latch with s30v blade steel.
Jacob Wrona and longer handles
where is that knife originated? thank that nation for a dope knife
Maybe a tanto variation?
No matter how good it’s made people will always complain.
this is so dope ass looking.LOVE IT
Nice knife
release date?
I really thought that this was going to be a bad knife, even tho I was hoping otherwise. But, a channel that flips like a Rep. I'd still rather wait for a Rep drop, but I see this being a good knife.
So it's that expensive because they waste a whole bunch of titanium grinding it from a billet? When people just want the 42 back? Benchmade, what the hell are you doing?
you do realize that they melt down the scraps and recycle it, right???
It's still a waste. You can't get every little scrap. Also, my big point is the fact that people really just wanted them to continue with the 42 design. Not make a totally different one. I realize Benchmade wants to be modern, but most of their customers don't want modern designs, it seems.
Nah bro people dont want the 42 back. 42 is overrated. Kids complain alot about the 42 blablabla. We dont want the 42 we want 87.
why tang pins and not Zen pins
What is that big box thing in the middle of the table?
It's where they keep Les De Asis' gerbil collection. ;) No idea, actually. -Ben
Please just produce the 42 ,_,
wow!!! 😍😻😻 except for the price 🙀😥 can't afford it. $600 for a balisong?! nah
Wow, ok, I understand that Titanium isn't super cheap, but It only takes 2 hours for you guys to make the handle for a knife? Why not make more? All you freaking do is put the damn block of titanium in there and press a button for the automated machine to machine out the metal...
