I really like a lot of obscure Black Metal bands and just metal in general. Also, what is a sell out, and why is signing to a major label a bad thing?

A sell out is when someone leaves someone whom they've pledged prior allegiance to & who in their eyes were not beneficial enough to them for some better offer that offers something desirable to them e.g. Higher positions, material items, riches, lovers -- Whatever that person desires. Some people don't want to support &/or be affiliated with large corporations
