Best way to describe fear of heights - loss of control. Feeling like the laws of physics will fail and you will fall no matter what (even fall upwards to the sky). Also my balance shuts off. If I try to walk across a bridge, I physically get dizzy and fall over and just crawl to the other side.

I would have loved to do downhill skiing but never could because of my phobia. Now I'm a senior citizen, and if anything, my fear of heights has gotten worse, not better, leading to yet more restriction of activities, unfortunately.

If it was like 5 10 seconds more he would’ve made it shoot up and I would’ve been dead. I would’ve flew over 100 feet in the air and fell. The most intense bout of fear I remember having about heights was in 4th grade (I'm in between 9th and 10th now but I can still remember it clearly). At my elementary school, we had a square spiraling staircase at the entrance of the school. Even though it only went up one floor, it felt longer. One day nearing our graduation, we had to do an "egg drop challenge" where we would drop eggs (encased in protective contraptions) and see whether they cracked or not. We were working in teams, and I wasn't the one assigned to drop it, but I remember the fear gripping me as I looked down the staircase. Everyone was standing up, but I felt my legs turn to jelly as I slid down into a sit and held onto the railing for dear life while everyone was talking and laughing around me. I don't think I'll ever forget that.

When I was 8 to 11 years old, I lived in Brazil in a place where there was a huge, maze mountain chains, just like what you see in Georgia near Russia. OMG, the mountains chains was a monster for me while I was approaching going around to go from point A, B, C and you see those deep valleys, it looks like it will swallow you. There was a pathway to go around. But whenever I was going to that direction I had a fear to get lost on the maze mountain. I remember about the mountain, but I can't remember where I was going to where? why I kept going there. It seems that I wanted to conquer the challenge. And sometimes it makes think, how come mountains existed in the area where I lived, kind of strange. Usually mountains are in a remote area. Sometimes I think if the mountains really existed, because it's hard to believe that I kept approaching the area with the mountains that scared me so much. Another place that scared me was the wood, scared of snakes, the giant rocks and afraid of snakes underneath the rocks and this wood just before going to the mountains area. One of these days I am going to google map to see if these mountains existed. It was too scaring to believe it existed. I just don't know how I managed to go to places beyond the mountain and return home surrounding the monsters.

I am not afraid of heights, for sure, but, on three occasions, high on mountains, my body reacted to what my eyes saw, and it saw danger, a strange sensation came over me, and I was compelled to get down on the grass. Even though my consciousness knew I wasn't in danger, my subconscious had a different point of view. Two of the times, it was an ever increasingly steep grass slope which I knew was leading to a cliff edge , there was nothing to stop me should I have tumbled down, my mind could see that as a predetermined fate. The third occasion, was a path that led to a 200 ft drop flanked by two pine trees on the edge. To the mind, DANGER. A very weird set of events.

Interesting, I don't even thought about that, but my fear of heights could be also related to my fear of uneven terrain if beeing in the car. Does someone has that too? When you are inside a car driving on a side of a hill, not on a steep slope but you'r slightly tilted, and you think you gonna roll over.

There is Hypsophobia (fear if heights) and there is acrophobia (fear of edges). Acro is edge or cliff- ACROpolis
Most people are acrophobic, few people are Hypsophobic. Meaning,, you can hang out on a rooftop with no problem whatsoever. But when you walk toward the edge, thats when your acrophobeia kicks in.
People who are afraid of even going on a roof have Ypsophobia, which is far more irrational fear. they wont even get into an elevator, or live more than 1 floor up.
Acrophobia is very common and normal. It is NOT an irrational fear.
    Ypsohobia is an irrational fear.

I'm definitely not afraid of heights. Quite the opposite actually, I'm a bit of an adrenaline junkie. I jump off cliffs and out of planes and climb cell towers for a living. I love the rush heights give me, but it was interesting to see the science behind why most people feel the opposite!

On his way down past each floor, he kept saying to reassure himself:

    How you fall doesn't matter.
    It's how you land.
