I love Kenny's picking. He can play anything but I really appreciate his solid epic telecaster country playing. He is at the top of honest rockabilly and country. music.
I happen to have the largest vintage string collection/stock in the world, and I''m a big fan of flatwound strings, even though I don't use them all the time.
George Harrison absolutely used flats on his Gretches; he and John Lennon used flats on their Rickenbackers, and Paul used flats on both his Hofner and Rickenbacker basses, and still uses flats to this day. The Beatles didn't start using thinner round-wounds until they started using their Epiphone Casinos. John even used flat-wounds on his J-160E.
As a producer and engineer, I can say with absolute certainty, that it's much easier to record and mix a bass or guitar with flat-wounds than round-wounds: they just sit in the mix much better, and there is less of a need for eq and compression.
I'm more than happy to discuss strings with anyone at any time.

Not in Nashville so much - everyone (who matters) knows and respects Kenny there. Outside of Nashville - definitely. He is remarkable. Marty Stuart's band rocks in general - Harry Stinson (drummer) is another killer musician - and great singer.

+1 . Could not have said it better. The general public needs fireworks and ass shaking hotties to keep interest in music (noise). Kenny is the essence of an accomplished player. Only real music professionals and few others would appreciate and take notice. I certainly do. Thanks god there a still real musicians in the world left today. Takes a bit of effort to find them out though. Thanks you Kenny.You're and exciting, incredible musical talent.

not only a great player but a great guy. he is a very serious player and a wonderful guy just to talk shop with. he kind of reminds me of GE smith when it comes to his knowledge of music instruments and techniques. I met him and Marty in WV at a show and was impressed how he is just a regular guy with extrordanary talents.

I met John Saint Holiday who was Carl Perkins not Luther in "Walk the Line" and he insisted on using flat wounds as well. Johnny and Kenny are both hot players. John recorded "Candy Man Blues" for the film and used flat wounds. Awesome I will try them for sure now.

My first electric had flats on it that was 58 years ago might try 'em again
in a very, very concise description roundwonds are bright sounding/rough feeling and flatwounds are smooth feeling and sound dark/dull

I using 13 flat wound at my LP ES Memphis and love it. Just wondering how it works with 09 flat wound? Anyone uses those?
I’ve used Curt Mangan 9-42 flats on my tele thru Princeton (no effects). Great combination of big, full and still jangley. They sit in the mix perfectly if you like thud, spank, and balance in your tone.

Round wound strings are wound with a round wire. They are bright and they make noise when you move your fingers. Flatwound strings are wound with a smooth flat ribbon. They have a more mellow sound and they don't produce a scraping string noise when you move your fingers.
My memory is not what it used to be but it seems like I recall reading a Clapton interview many moons ago where he discussed using a banjo string in place of the wound G string so he could get the extra bending range. It also seems like he indicated that he came up with the idea (but I could be mistaken). Anyone else know for sure?

@MyManDan Guitar players are always searching for a better or different sound and feel and as such they will try any string they feel will get them that sound or feel. So, yeah, he probably has used every brand of string and every type of every brand. Personally, I like Phosphor Bronze on my acoustic and have used many brands, including D'Addario, but right now I use Elixer. It's a personal preference. Kenny likes the sound of the flat wound string vs a nickle plated or a round wound. Works too.
Great guide for flatwound strings. Ironically not that much for electric guitar on the subject on youtube!
Sounds great for mellow sounds, but can you get Country Twang and snap out of flatwound strings?

@diabolusme Marty has been good enough for Lester Flatt and Johnny Cash and for record labels. That should be good enough for most folks who never played for country and bluegrass giants. Marty is no slouch on guitar or mandolin and can hold his own with most anyone. Kenny is a great player, good tone and effortless playing. I would love to see Kenny play with Jack Pearson. That would be sweet to see and hear!

+Shiles W In the early days, guitar string sets had wound 3rds. Players started to change that out to a plain 3rd making bending so much easier.
I think he's just talking about replacing a wound G string with a plain one. Most of the rock guys prefer a plain G, while the jazz guys usually use a wound G string.
Back in the day, guitar players often tossed the wound G and used a second B string for the G. Then everyone realized how effortless it was to bend the G string, and then tossing the low E, and moving everything down, and replacing the high E with a banjo string began; hence, leading to manufacturers like Ernie Ball and Rotosound-and soon others-to offer a wider range of string sets than just light, medium, and heavy. Based on my 34 years of playing, collecting and research, Gibson did their best to offer the widest variety of strings to suit the "needs" of guitar players than any other sting manufacturer. Unfortunately, those days are long gone.

🤔 a long damn time ago i used d'addario strings; and i eighty sixed them because so easily they broke (if you are thinking about arguing then choke on it because i dont argue. argument is always a fucking lie. argument is the manifestation of the absence of truth). during that same period in time; at a denver nightclub called cricket on the hill; many times playing with a band called the rock advocates i saw kenny; and he is one of the greatest ever. really unparalleled. and the rock advocates were awesome. two talented brothers and kenny and a drummer that emulated a freight train🌪👻

Yes, although most players would say bending becomes a little more difficult , but certainly still possible.

Marty's music is, at best, real country music, and I have no regrets about going to see him, cause he is, in my books, hell amazing. If you want "parody music", try Taylor Swift, cause what she does is NOT real country music.
