We use R-7 ear powder and pour a fair amount in the ear and work on pulling hair using our fingers as the dog allows. We like the powder because it provides grip on the hair and it dries the ear out ao no waxy build up

I'm glad it can help! For "mats", depending on the severity, we use rakes, mat breakers & combs. We also use detangling sprays. I hope this helps
