As far as I can tell it is best practice to run down first to prevent the train 'jolting'. Probably more important if you are accelerating fast at lower speeds. I use my own judgement and don't always run down all the way to zero before braking if I have to brake quickly or I don't think its necessary. I guess in real life you want to keep passengers comfortable and avoid damage to couplings etc.
@ Thanks for the response👍🏻Yeah my take on things is the same as yours. However the reason I asked is when you brake whilst on notch 20, 39, or whatever in order to brake for a lower speed limit the notch counter starts to run down automatically ( I still use the classic dial HUD with all the info ) and notch numbers turn yellow suggesting the braking is turning the notches into regenerative energy to assist braking then when you take the brakes off the notch numbers turn white again and start to automatically climb back up although, not always to the number that it was previously set at. I’m not sure if this is a feature of the Class 87, a bug in the game, or just bad driving practice? It’s a lot easier than having to remember to run all the way down to zero everytime you want to brake though. 😉
So do you have to completely run down to zero before you can start to brake or can you start to brake without running down first? 🤔
