- Beannachtaí Lá ‘le Bríde! Happy St. Brigit's Day! Today, I share three stories in which Brigit helps, feeds the hungry (human or otherwise!), seeks solutions, and creates peace and plenty. She's THE BEST and with her example, we, too, can participate in active benevolence. With her example and inspiration, we can make a real difference in our beloved world.
My question for you this week:
I've noted five essential qualities of Brigit in my commentary this week.
1. What other qualities do you see? Which of these qualities would you like to cultivate in yourself?
2. Is there an issue or challenge in your life which you could approach with Brigit's positive, problem-solving energy?

Two great books about Brigit/Brigid/Bridget/Bríd (spelling varies depending on source and language, but these stories are about so much more than spelling, as you know).
Two Lives of Saint Brigid - edited and translated by Philip Freeman. This book contains two of the early biographies of St. Brigit from which I draw today’s stories.
The Festival of Brigit: Celtic Goddess and Holy Woman - by Séamas Ó Catháin. A great work of folklore and comparative mythology.

I'm sharing what I've learned from 25 years as a teacher of Irish folklore and language and from 50 years as a conscious creator. I'm a poet, singer, storyteller, and scholar and teacher of Irish language and folklore with a PhD in Celtic Languages and Literatures from Harvard University where I've been teaching for the past 25 years. I also run the Bardic Academy, a school for singers, harpers, poets, and pianists, as well as the Celtic Wisdom School where we study Irish folklore with an eye to growing in creativity, wisdom, and joy.

I love your stories! I think you kitty loves them, too! My favorite part about Brigid is that she is a woman of action. While other female saints are often described as beautifully praying or writing, all of Brigid's stories are about her "doing" good in the world. She is such a beautiful example to us.

St. Brigit is an angelic inspiration who exudes goodness and composed resolution. She teaches by example that it is completely doable in small incremental acts in our daily lives. Feeding the birds, or leaving a small piece of art for someone to find to brighten his/her day can add a small sparkle of love. I love your poem and the tales of St. Brigit. Thank you. Brigid is witty, loving, and charming in both her problem solving and her rule breaking. I admire people who achieve goals with strength and gentleness because it's a wonderful paradox that creates such depth in a human. I aspire to be such a person. I trust in my generosity, kindness, and strength, but they do not always converge. And yes, Brigid is tired, my friend, as you so poignantly shared. In times like these, we need audacious benevolence, unbridled kindness, and boundless generosity. It's a lot to ask of a single person, though so many of us do our best every day. My fervent wish is that we coalesce, sharing our strengths and bounties, to help create a world where beloveds don't go hungry or unloved, where strangers are friends we have yet to meet, and all beings are treated with kindess and respect.

I have always had a special place in my heart for St. Bridget. My mother wanted to name me Bridget Mary but my father won out-on choosing my name.
Even as a young child I was fascinated by her courage, she was fearless. Quite the opposite of my character, painfully shy and fearful. However we do have some similarities, I feel great sorrow for the poor especially children. When children are neglected, going without food and clothing. I will go without to pay for clothes and food for these children, help their families. I have someone else pass these things along to the family.
Like St.Bridget I always have enough for the rent or food. It just happens, I don’t have to think about it.
I wish I was as fearless as St. Bridget but maybe I do have a little bit of her in me.
I do have a great devotion to her, Bridget is my Confirmation name. May she guide us in our life journey.

Another thing I see in these stories: Brigit always fixes things so everyone wins (or doesn't know when they've lost, as with the silly king). We would do very well to follow this practice, now and always forevermore! 🙂

Play with my dog,
Draw a picture,
Sing a song,
Be thankful for all I have,
Share it.

I listen to it frequently,, it is so empowering and rejuvinating. It is available under meditations on her beautiful website.
I am a nurse and I hung my uniforms out to be blessed by St Bridget for the first of Feb🤗.
It has become an official holiday of celebration here for the last few years leading to a rejuvination of everything St Bridget and a gorgeous atmosphere for her weekend of celebration.❤

My helping challenge at the moment is to listen more deeply to the feelings that arise in conversations and then to explore with others what those feelings mean to them. I’ve been an idea person all my life so taking a relationship deeper through emotional sensitivity is new territory for me.

Wonderful as always 💚Your poem also reminded me of another favorite that I think of often, Brigit Told Me 💙A couple of things that struck me, in the first two stories she did not ask that the butter be refilled or the meat be restored to the bone, she asked that it work out for the best and left the particulars of what that would be to the power/s greater than herself -- that strikes me as creating space for an unknown good to happen ❤ Also, the litany of attributes she's known for seem to be very much all-of-a-piece -- kinship with all life, for instance, seems at least in my world to bring generosity and other things along with it -- go raibh *mile* maith agat for the *scéalta* and for all that you bring to these posts 🧡💛

Thank you for the book recommendations. I have been wondering if there were any you thought we might enjoy. I will look into those right now! When I was a little girl, I had a Brownie handbook (young Girl Scouts) that suggested we could perform good deeds for people, in a way that sounded to me like that of a sprite or a leprechaun - even if the recipients weren't aware. Inspired, when my parents weren't looking, I did some tidying up of the house! I love these stories of Brigit you are sharing, as her spirit of truly wanting to help people and animals, not thinking of any reward for herself, is so beautiful.

I see two spellings for her. Am I right in thinking that she is goddess Brigid and when she becomes a saint she becomes St. Bridget with a T?
Such a good question. You'll see all of these: Brigit, Brigid, Bridget, Bríd. In the early sources, she is almost always Brigit (by that I mean the hagiography, the medieval storytelling, and Cormac's Glossary). These days, she is mostly known as Brigid in English and Bríd in Irish. Whatever the spelling, though, she is the same good-hearted, generous, ingenious, problem-solving, loving woman!
Is St Bridget acknowledged by the Church?
I can't ever remember her name be mentioned
I'm not an expert by any means on the Church, but my understanding is that it's a bit complicated in that her canonization was considered somewhat unusual. Still, I love to see how many Catholic Churches around me are named for her.
