    Every Other Nen User: "So, how does it feel to be Togashi's favorite?"

  • @renan-elias13
    @renan-elias13 4 года назад +1668

    Togashi after thinking about the basic rules of Nen:
    "Crap those rules a very cool, but it limits the amount of crazy shonen superpowers I can create!"
    Togashi then proceeds to create the "Specialists" so he is free to create any type of shounen superpower.

      I feel like authors are obligated to create a system like this lmao. Limiting the range of powers only makes the story feel more monotonous. Like how the author of Jojo’s had to introduce Stands because Hamon was too basic.

    • @NerdishGeekish
      @NerdishGeekish 4 года назад +118

      @@MyNegroAcademia not necessarily. As long as the rules are well thought out it is extremely interesting to see how characters play around their limitations rather than shit out energy blast after energy blast (basically most other shounen anime) and only be limited by an undefined reservoir of "magic currency" (chakra, spiritual pressure, mana, whatever else) that holds JUST enough battery to defeat the big bad of the arc.
      The specialist nen affinity can be a free "crazy superpowers" coupon, but IMO Togashi used it responsibly. Out of all nen users we get to see in HxH only 10 ore 15 percent of them are specialists, and with a few exceptions (Leol being a specialist is kinda ehh) they are always characters for whom it makes absolute sense for them to be specialists.

He just didn't want to smoke before the battle with the king's guard because he was worried they might smell him while he was taking a breath and didn't want to risk the chance.

    Observation on Specialists: A lot of them are shown in the series to have some sort of identity crisis or dilemma.
    Chrollo is unsure of his motives as Phantom troupe leader.
    Kurapika struggles against his better self in order to be cold-blooded.
    Meleoron identity switch when he learned about Peggy.
    Leol with his "Hagya" issue.
    Pakunoda wrestling with the meaning of betraying the troupe.
    Pitou with the whole Komugi situation.
    Meruem confusion with best girl Komugi.
    They tend to be introspective, but are unsure of themselves despite the constant self-checking.
    Hence, their powers tend to be of an assuming, copying or stealing nature- like it was some sort of coping/escape mechanism, that allows them to be someone or something else.
    Kurapika felt powerless, so his specialist nen allows him to assume a greater/more powerful form.
    Meleoron assumes a form that allows him to escape responsibility.
    Paku steals people's memories, helping her to make better decisions.
    Chrollo steals other peoples' powers perhaps due to boredom, or compensating for a thirst in his childhood, being from the ghetto.
    Leol wants others to rely on him, as one would with a king, but he also felt inadequate, so his power revolved around bringing others to debt under him, and copying/assuming their power
    Pitou wanted a playmate, so his power let him "fix broken toys" and make them "play with him", hence the marionettes, (Natsuki flashbax lel), assuming control of them/himself (Terpsichora).
    Meruem was always hungry for more, so his power revolved around being the greatest predator, allowing him to assume powers of those he consumes.
    For the most part, they seem to be an assuming/pretentious bunch- aka "closet/muttsuri/tsundere tryhard" and are very ambitious, sometimes beyond their ability (ie. Leol & Meleoron vs Meruem, Kurapika vs troupe).

But, he could have just been a Specialist to start with, hard to say. ...Meruem is about the only character we can safely say had his specialist ability right away, since we also see his first moments of nen "use" (even if it's kind of a passive activation thing).

      musgodness that’s not how enhancers work,
      It might sound like an oxymoron but enhancers don’t just “enhance” just about anything or any “aspect/element”. (Also sorry in advance if i wrote *way* too much-)
      Enhancers are basically the masters of all nen basics, capable of mastering and perfecting Nen techniques that anyone can do- but they specifically can “enhance”/do better with those nen techniques/fundamentals.
      they are “stronger” because they are better at enhancing their aura with Ren, and have much better control/affinity of their Ten, Ko, Shu & Ken, which all enhancers apply in different ways for their finalized hatsu (also having a close/2nd affinity with emission helps them use “Shu” on objects they can throw, and other interesting/creative synergetic applications ), this makes enhancers hatsu/ability easy to dissect and break down, while also making them versatile to flip the script by means of using basic applications of nen in new creative ways for a situation in the midst of combat.
      Its true that perhaps Komugi might been able to enhance her “brain capacity” by some unknown/unexplored “enhancer” method of nen, maybe there are Nen nodes on the inside of the skull and not just the surface of the body, but judging by the way her nen is presented, there doesn’t seem to be much involvement of nen enhancing herself or the pieces(plus “enhancing” the pieces of Gungi by means of Shu wouldn’t impact the strategy aspect of Gungi anyway, just make them stronger/durable), if anything, her ability seems closer to “seeing possible future combinations” many steps ahead like a chain of possibilities, by means of applying her nen’s special properties onto her pieces and connecting them, using a very small application of emission-...but maybe that’s not enough to discard enhancer, it’s still possible there’s a “brain enhancing” technique involved which could be the baseline to helping her at gungi- so here’s further prove that she’s unlikely an enhancer.
      Based on her personality she doesn’t seem to be as stubborn, selfish or straightforward as enhancers tend to be(based on their “enhancer personality traits”), rather, she leans more on the solitary, dedicated and “oddly alluring” traits of a specialists, (tho i am of the opinion that she could have also made for a Manipulator at one point, but that’s a separate discussion)
      Also, her hatsu seems dedicated solely on Gungi, and wasn’t developed through a conscious effort or nen training, but rather the intense need to break the normal limit of how good she’d be at playing/planing gungi- (a trait that seems to be exclusive for specialist-“natural/unconscious hatsu creation”, sense their abilities can’t really be created, due to how they break the conventional nen rules, so they are instead manifested by what the desire is...any extra properties can be added by the specialist in question if he/she is a trained nen user who knows how to further add conditions and restrictions and what not...but most specialist already have a satisfying hatsu manifested from the start, so it seems that very few of them go out of their way to develop it even more with knowledge/understanding of nen- Chrollo and Kurapika being examples of people who have changed/developed their hatsu’s even more due to experience, i digress...)
      Hence all of this, she’s most likely a specialist, her ability doesn’t fall under the basic/fundamental rules of nen, which is what makes it harder to understand/break-down in the first place, which is a natural specialist hatsu trait.

  • @bartonfang
    @bartonfang 4 года назад +7

    I think the most common misconception is that you have to develop a skill based on your natural affinity. In the cases of biscuit, her ability can be a combination between conjuring and enhancement. Note that, when the scissor guy ate her hair, he described her power as beyond her natural talent. Indicating that with enough training, mastery over a power outside of natural affinity is highly possible. And that from the original Nen description, it is stated that if you use abilities outside of your affinity, it is only harder to learn, and have more weaknesses; however, utility abilities such as biscuit's do not have to be "perfect" in combat, and hence her ability can be completely useless for combat, yet use higher level conjuration and enhancement abilities outside of her affinity without any risk in exposing a huge weakness during combat. If you think of it this way, many abilities that look "specialist" all of sudden does not.

    I was always under the impression that specialist was the raw power that Nen limitations gave. By putting conditions on your hatsu and yourself, anyone could in theory tap into the potential of specialist abilities, unlike other affinities it's not an issue of natural talent, but of creativity and willingness to work outside the box. Therefore the reason enhancers would be unlikely to become specialists is because they would be the least likely to need conditions to improve the potency of their power.

      I'm not entirely sure about this but it seems like he doesn't have as much control on nen abilities that come from his book since when he was using the cloth against the Zoldyck's it stayed the same length and size the entire time where as the guy who he stole the ability from, Owl I think, was changing the size of it quite a bit even when he wasn't shrinking people but that can be because of need, Chrollo just getting the ability or because we didn't see it actually catch either of the Zoldyck's and that it only changes size when shrinking. Though it seems a bit overpowered to give Chrollo the ability to use it as well as the creator though his book does have a pretty steep restriction when you consider how closely most nen users guard their hastus. I looked it up on the wiki and it even it says that its unclear if he can use it with the same level of proficiency or its just from his own skill.

    A thing to be taken into consideration is that the world of HXH does contain magic beasts and other forms of phisics and rules that may not exist in our reality. What i mean by that is that for example, a transmuter, who is characterized by having talent in making their aura replicate a phenomena or substance may be allowed to use such concepts to their ability.
    For example the guides of the hunter exam, who are magical beasts that can take the form of a human. Im sure nen abilities are able to replicate such ability if the user is familiar with how it works more or less. So maybe transmuters are allowed to "conjure" a beast or something, if a creature of the world of hxh has a substance that allows that to happen.

    I have to say. Meleoreon's combat ability is the sole weakness of his nen ability. Otherwise "Perfect plan" is an insanely OP ability that would ensure an automatic win against any oponent, provided you have a means of inflicting lethal damage or otherwise neutralise them. And that's BEFORE taking into account the fact that you can share this ability with a buddy. Just imagine if for example Chrollo would get to steal "Perfect plan". It would be a total game changer.

    Its pretty obvious
    that Specialization-Nen always 'layers above' some other
    Nen-Category.
    I mean, we literally see it all the time: Chrollo conjures a book,
    Kurapika enhances his Nen-Skill itself,
    and Neon emits an ugly-as-fluff thing.
    I mean, i really dont understand some peoples misconception
    that they literally have to learn and incorporate those other
    Categorys into their Ability.
    AT LEAST Neon's existence should blow that Idea to pieces, yeah?
    She's a Nen-Genius; an uncounciouss User - you really wanna tell me

      You probably heard that Fans have noticed the
      obvious Trend that Specialist-Nen never seems to be directly harmful to anyone; and i just agree with that (just wanted to mention it).
      But i did notice yet another thing. It seems pretty definitive that Specialist-Nen ALWAYS seems to 'layer above' some other Type. I mean, Kurapika 'enhances' his Nen-Efficiency, Meleoron 'transmutes' Invisiblity (while the only other time we see Camouflage is when Morel;
      in the same Story-Arc;
      camouflages himself with Grass via Transmutation), and Pakunodas Ability can only be described as a Form/Variant of Telepathy.
      And we all know which Nen-Type is heavily associated with Telepathy and Signal-Receiving: EMISSION.
      And this list goes on and on and can be applied to literally everyone. I think people have not noticed but you can do 10 Things with Nen: The normal 5 things plus what i call special-enhance, special-emit, special-manipulate, special-transmute and special conjure. I'm not a professional Speech-Maker, so my explanation may have been lackluster, so please feel free to ask questions.
      I never believed that Chrollo has the 'formless, shapeless' ability to 'steal stuff' and then also conjures a Book just to 'enchant it' with his said ability. That never made sense to me, but ok, Conjuration is right next to him,
      so it was kinda logical though odd.
      BUT if you want one giant Evidence for all i said today, i present to you a babe... named Neon Nostrade.
      She doesnt even know Nen and youre telling me she is 'emitting' an (ugly) Nen-Beast, making it 'manipulate' her Hand into doing something 'special'?
      THREE Types? From a rather simplistic Nen-User that isnt aware of Nen?
      No way.
      No way.
      No, instead, it seems to me that Chrollos Ability IS 'to summon a book that allows Ability Stealing' and Neons Specialist-Ability IS 'Fortune Telling in the form of a nen-beast manipulating her'. Means that both are pure Specialization-Abilitys but one can be forgiven to think it's other Types.
      And i legit believe that is the Point of Specialization.

    So I've heard you say a couple times that meleoron can be tracked by scent while using perfect plan, and I don't think thats really true.
    Unless there is some source that confirms that, I'm pretty sure that he's 100% undetectable by any means when using it, it's just that if he emits a scent while NOT using it, then vanishes, that scent will linger, i.e. someone with a decent nose would be able to sniff and say "wtf it smells like someone was just here" but I don't think that they can actively smell him while he's invisible.
    It seemed to be how he described that weakness when initially talking to Gon, and I think it's supported by the fact that welfin, who has a super top tier nose, smelled meleoron during the one second he was catching his breath, and thought he was still there to the point that he fired his missiles at that spot. He also didn't detect meleorons presence before he appeared to take the breath, and couldn't tell he walked to another spot while invisible, which with welfins nose would be incredibly easy to do if he was able to actively smell him.
    If there's some source that says you can just easily smell meleoron while he's holding his breath, I'm obviously wrong, but it seems to me the evidence points to no.

    Kay, so. I'm workshopping a nen ability dubbed "nen leech", I'm having trouble classifying it, so I'll describe it here and see if people agree with its specialist status.
    The user can transfer nen energy between themself and whoever they touch with the palm of their hands. They could power up a friend and drain themself, or drain an opponent in battle, though the drain works slowly, so good luck keeping your hands on the enemy mid-combat. It also isn't percentage based, so it would take far less time to drain Leorio dry compared to Meruem.
    Part 2 of this ability is to directly channel nen energy into regenerative power. This ability kinda sucks on its own, it relies on lots of extra nen power to heal anything significant on a sensible time-scale. However, If another powerful nen user is nearby, he can drain them in order to boost his regen ability. Same as the before, it only works through their palms. They could use this on themself, but again, only for small wounds. A severed arm would likely be their limit, spending an entire day using all available nen just to stitch it back on.
    People can regenerate their nen after they've been drained, though it takes time, and the receiver of bonus nen has added strain on their body, plus slowly expels the excess if they can't contain it.
    I guess the "healing" part is a transmuter ability, with the nen leech being the specialist.

      Hey, know I’m late. I think that ability is really cool! I don’t think it’d be a specialist-transmutation ability though. Healing seems to be enhancement (Kurapika’s holy chain) and transferring aura between people seems to be something anyone can do (Tsubone’s ability). I think that last part would be emission, since you’re essentially separating aura from its vessel. It’d be a really cool ability for an emitter or enhancer, touching someone and using their aura to heal yourself.

    Specialist ability: Star boy - Removes specialist from your Hatsu chart adding 10% potential proficiency to each category. Everyday you switch between a primary Hatsu in order.
    5 primary/secondary Hatsu.
    Enhancement Hatsu , Agro. The more opponents faced the stronger the body becomes. Opponents have to be living beings and have to accept your challenge either verbally or non-verbally.
    Emitter Hatsu, Grid. Aura Maps out area within a specific range of the user via a sonar like pulse. Think of an in game mini map. The larger the pulse the less details.
    Transmutation Hatsu, Parasite sponge. Opponents grabbed with parasite sponge have their aura consumed enhancing users base nen permanently. It takes time to digest aura based on how much is consumed. Can’t use other abilities while nen is being digested and must maintain physical contact like a leech.
    Manipulator Hatsu, skill share. By placing aura into any items that has recorded information within it that knowledge is temporarily gained. Example, if you need to know a language so you pour aura into a book to know the language. Limitation knowledge is known only for how long aura remains in the object. Potential work around is having a smartphone. Or a book with specialized information in it.
    Conjuror Hatsu, pen of swords. Conjure a pen that binds a contract to the users who sign with it. Whoever breaks the contract is impaled by a sword summoned above the user like the sword of Damocles. Limitations obviously it can hurt the conjuror and contracts can have potential loop holes voiding it completely.

    Gon and Bisky’s situation seem mostly based on Enhancement- but with tapping on that “1%” of specialization element.
    Unlike a lot of what i see people saying, I wouldn’t say specialist are better then the other nen types, or Togashi’s favorite child, but a specialist could definitely be the best at achieving 1 unorthodox/complicated goal better then any other nen type.
    However, only nen users as good as chrollo can go the extra step into developing that specialist ability into something more flexible and useful, adding conditions, restrictions and extra abilities (like the bookmark)
    most Nen hunters really don’t seem to envy specialist because their nen types are already the best suited for what they need, specialist is for people who are too obsessed/focused on something that they take some complicated/double-edged one trick ability to achieve it, a big contrast of the simple, straightforward and flexible Enhancers.
    So, it doesn’t make specialist bad, or better, they are simply good at using exceptions that even they often can’t understand, and they still need to further develop their ability on their own if they plan to be more flexible and not be quickly figured out, which, i think as a specialist who’s ability is unique to all the rules, can be more tough to figure out (that’s why with most basic specialists, once you know their trick, that’s mostly all there is to them).

      were known: "Oh, ok, so it's the, uhm, Occult-Type. It's the Occult-Type, right?'
      but that Theory died real soon when we simply got more Examples.
      We honestly have no clue and only know 2 things,
      which i will now strongly-summarize:
      -Specialist-Nen cant be offensive, apparently.
      -It seems to always laer-above another Type.
      Is it 'outside' or 'evolved' or 'layered-above'? What now??
      I mean, it certainly seems like at least Part of it is that it's the
      1 Type that lets you kinda decide your Type (but also not?),
      but it's really unclear.

      @@nenmaster5218 dude it's really simple, a specialist's hatsu manifests completely out of need/passion for something they have. They are usually dedicated to something in specific, When you want an ability that doesn't fit the other nen types, specialization bends the rules to make a hatsu that's unique and has it's own rules.
      The pros and cons of specialisation is that they have a unique ability who's rules tend to work outside of the normal nen rules so they can be a bit busted and really surprise you, but if you figure those rules out(since they still need to rely on conditions/restrictions), then they are usually at a huge disadvantage because they're almost a "one trick" pony once you figure out their shtick.
      They boil down to one unique ability, with one or two conditions/restrictions that they themselves might not have made a consious effort for.(while with other Nen types, they do have to develop it from the ground up and make conscious decisions that work within the rules of Nen)
      The really strong/good specialist we see, are usually specialist who go beyond just their given unique/naturally manifested 1 trick hatsu/ability, and actually work within the rules of nen to further expand on it and make it even more flexible, by consiously adding more restrictions, conditions and rules that do work within the Nen system. (such as Kurapika, Chrollo and presumably Neferpito. Tho chimera ants are a bit tricky since they seem naturally gifted with Nen and all their abilities seem to manifest naturally and almost instantly unlike humans, so their genetics are a bit of an exception. But Neferpito was the first to study Nen, and has such a complex hatsu, that I'm pretty sure she consiously developed it further with her own knowledge and that's why she's a well balanced and versatile specialist like Kurapika and Chrollo.
      Look at any other specialist who seems to go with the flow an you'll notice their specialist abilities are very simple and niche/situational. With a 1 trick pony type of ability you'd have an easy time with defeating.)

      No, actually, not everyone knows that.

      @@nenmaster5218 no, I didn't say everyone knew that. Most people don't actually( especially not on their first watch of hxh, myself included). But it is there, not everything is explicitly stated but you can see it a d explain it
      I wasn't insulting you're capacity to understanding it, I was reassuring you that you didn't have to over think it and that it's more simple that you're making it out to be.
      (But yea, like everything Nen related, it has it's depth, especially looking at individual Nen users and not just the overall Nen type. That's because some users can use neighboring Nen types to further develop their hatsu and trully make something unique to them...but still not outside of the basic rules.
      There's only 1 or 2 examples that come to mind regarding Nen users who are truly hard to explain and figure out given everything we can deduce with certainty and everything we are told explicitly.)

      You probably heard that Fans have noticed the
      obvious Trend that Specialist-Nen never seems to be directly harmful to anyone; and i just agree with that (just wanted to mention it).
      But i did notice yet another thing. It seems pretty definitive that Specialist-Nen ALWAYS seems to 'layer above' some other Type. I mean, Kurapika 'enhances' his Nen-Efficiency, Meleoron 'transmutes' Invisiblity (while the only other time we see Camouflage is when Morel;
      in the same Story-Arc;
      camouflages himself with Grass via Transmutation), and Pakunodas Ability can only be described as a Form/Variant of Telepathy.
      No way.
