Vauxhall Astra Mk4 (G) Replace Rear Coil Springs And Corroded Rear Brake Lines
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- This is the last part of the MOT failure this Vauxhall Astra Mk4 needed to be done. I replace the rear suspension springs and also had to replace the rear brake lines. They were corroded to the pipe fittings as well so I had to cut the brake pipes and make new pipe connections using a brake flaring tool. It then passed the MOT for another year.

Martin, I can't begin to emphasise how helpful you are mate. Had a failed MOT on my Astra H in June and lost my job at the same time due to the inability to commute, so initial work was done on a budget and a lot of manual graft. I had to replace both front brake lines, hoses, de-rust and protect the entire underbelly, subframes, rear axle, all four knuckles, exhaust mounts, fuel tank straps. I did everything but the rear lines and hoses, due to cash flow. Now the rears have to be done because o/s is leaking after attempt to remove. Luckily both are connected by separators so no more aggro trying to loop them through the engine again.
You proper helped me out about 2 years ago when I did my own first full service after Vauxhall wanted a Kidney and a litre of blood after the year previous only went half-arsed and conned me out of 400 sobs, so I told them to cop that, I'll do it myself! You showed how to do a quick air-bleed on the Astra Z16XER which is pretty much the same as my Z18XER, after replacing the coolant. My car was overheating after the change and with a few quick pumps of the hose it was resolved. I couldn't find a result anywhere, so if I didn't see your video mate I'd have been drudging through the internet for days.
Now, you've got two new videos for jobs for jobs I want doing, this and the lower arms and drops, and the G near enough has the same subframes as the H from what I could see. I want to replace the lower arms but I have been a bit apprehensive about doing the work because of limited space and specific tools but watching you do them has given me the confidence to get it all done ready for the MOT.
Honestly mate, can't thank you enough for the effort you put in. One of the most valuable and informative channels on RUclips. Once I'm back out of the red I'll throw you a drink mate. All the best 👍
Nice one Dan, I'm sure you'll sort it bud. Good luck with it.
Brilliant to see someone keeping an "older" car on the road and fixing it to a high standard 👌makes me miss my Astra bertones 😞
You and me both!
Newer style flaring tool is much easier to use especially when lying on the ground under the car.
Great job you did there.
Another great piece of automotive work Martin. You never cease to amaze me how many cars have been repaired or modified under that carport. Love your work....😊
Thanks Martin for showing us this video and I learnt loads… a garage would have charged a fortune!!
Totally enjoyed that Martin. I’ve got one of those flaring tools I bought years ago but never knew how to use it. Thanks for the Tutorial it’s very much appreciated. I wouldn’t normally tackle a job like that on my brakes, but now if it arises I will definitely have a bash. JF.EGWO. 👍🔧
I was surprised that you chose to do a double flare with those nuts. I`ve learned that double flare nuts shall have threads all the way out to the flare, while bubble flare nuts will have a small threadless area at the end. Anyway I´m glad it worked out well for you. I´ve also noticed that copper-nickle tubing grows together with the nut. Next time I´ll try to use some copperpaste on the tube as a layer between the tube itself and the nut. Maybe it helps… Stay safe and keep posting :-)
Brake pipe unions are always a problem getting undone on a older car, they almost always twist the brake line off !.
He is my submission for the draw Martin JF.EGWO 👍
Might be worth brushing off and treating the whole underside of the car with something to preserve it before the tin worm sets in. Good job and sound methods in the repair as always 👍🏻
Yea looks like the titanic under there
Its all surface rust.
I will get round to it.
@@retrorestore Nothing wrong with Martin buddy. A little surface rust if they think that is bad they should see the stuff I deal with on a daily.
I remember the first time I made a flared brake pipe I done a real nice job of the flare, but was disappointed to see the nut still sitting on the workbench 😂
May have an explanation as regards those broken springs...too many butlersempire air fryer slow cooker meals, just a thought 🙂
lol
JF.EGWO
Great video. It sure does pay to be handy. Scary how much garages charge for stuff nowadays.
Nice work Martin never easy undoing old bolt's it give the astra nother lease of life 👍 jf.egwo
JF.EGWO Good to see you keeping older cars on the road 👍
JF.EGWO Along time since I've replaced a copper brake on a mk5 escort under the fuel tank , a rite pig of a job ! Good job there Martin 👍
JF.EGWO
That was a handy tip keeping the brake pedal pressed down👍
JF.EGWO old cars are the best buddy you do this on a modern motor a right ass ache
JF.EGWO. Very good video, great to see how to flare the copper pipes, well done ✅
JF.EGWO, another great video Martin love the way you go to show in detail how you do things and show how the brake pipe making tool works. Hope all is well with the family. Take care
Thanks Joe.👍
Nice job and good to see the work around with the worn pipe union. Tidy job!
Thanks 👍
this is why I watch your videos, your all over the place fixing cars to working on the air fryer to redoing the back yard. much better than the one sided boring videos out there. very knowledgeable you are thumbs up from Canada. JF.EGWO if I win give it to your east neighbor.
Great job chief, did someone similar a while back on a Peugeot for a friend and couldn't get the break pipe off, so had to cut and attach a new pipe.
JF.EGWO Great vid Martin. Made a messy horrible job look straightforward !
Martin
All the years of doing jobs on cars I have never come a cross using a piece of timber to hold down the brake peddle to stop brake fluid dripping out good tip mate
Phil in stoke
Never quite goes to plan with old cars, does it? 🤷🏽 Nice tip on squashing the pipe before cutting it to stop leaks; not seen that one before. 👍🏽 JF.EGWO
Just bought a bertone and these are all coming in very handy mate! Really good explanations
Glad you like them!
You've got your work cut out there Martin. Missus breaks it and you fix it! JF.EGWO
JF.EGWO
Good tip on pressing the brake pedal down to prevent fluid loss.
I usually use specific 2 way female jointing fittings when joining pipes rather than a male and female fitting.
JF.EGWO
Great little tool you’ve got for creating pipe flares, looks a lot easier to use on the vehicle to the hydraulic unit we have in our commercial garage.
JF.EGWO 👍🏻 awesome work
JF.EGWO top work as usual and great timing with the wishbone vid as it's a job I've got to tackle very soon 👍
JF.EGWO

JF.EGWO great video I remember doing brake pipes on a MK3 astra in the drive with it trying to snow on me fun time's 🥶
I will be doing my own brake pipes now I've seen it done,thanks.JF.EGWO.
Nice job , I was surprised that you didn't replace the rust rear shocks, looking forward for the next vlog.,keep it up..
That's another video. This was getting it through the MOT.
Nice tip on the double flare Mart. JF.EGWO
JF.EGWO Thanks for the refresher on brake pipe flaring. Glad to see you are still making varied and informative videos. My hat off to you, I doubt I could do it.
Thanks again!
Do love how easy you make repair jobs look, it probably takes you longer to edit the video 😂
JF.EGWO
Great stuff, i've followed your guides so many times when working on my own cars, keep up the good work, cheers
👍👍👍👍
Great to hear!
Great video Martin, I learned a lot watching this one. The bottom of your cars in the UK appear to rust very badly due to the salt you put on the roads in winter. In Ireland the winters are not as cold and less salt is used. The underneath of my 10 year old car is like new.
Yes John, lucky it is only surface ruse but the main body of the car is not rusty, it's only the subframe.
JF.EGWO Another fabulous video Martin, love the way you just cross every hurdle you come across
Cheers Steve
JF.EGWO.
Very well done Martin lovely to see
I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, watching my dad work on many vehicles (cars and motorbikes) over his time in the garage and driveway.
He passed away unexpectedly a few years ago in his 60’s which was far too soon.
Watching your videos brings back some very happy memories and I’m sure you would have both got along really well. Your whole family interaction and vibe is/was the same for us too. So that also is a blessing.
Keep doing what you do and thank you for doing these videos on your channels.
Thanks bud, glad you enjoy the videos.
Hi Martin and Family. I’ve got a pipe just burst and your video helps me get the idea how to do it. Big thanks.
JF.EGWO
I have to get some work done on that other a4 I got if the weather stays dry am not touching it In the hail and rain sod that. I have done a few of them spring's in my day Martin you always do good work very confident with you pal.👍

JF.EGWO great work on the Astra you certainly lucked out with the brake pipes I always snap either the bleeders or the brake pipes are that thin they fall to bits that’s my luck lol thanks for a great video. Tom

JF.EGWO
Cracking job as usual martin.
JF.EGWO Great video Martin. You didn't expect everything to go to plan did you. You saved the day with that wonderful brake flaring kit.
Well done
I thought it was going to be a pig of a job Jeff lol
JF.EGWO...... Great content as usual, lovely repair work Martin 👍
Thanks 👍
JF.Egwo Great Job Martin, I did a front to back on a Vectra c fairly easy but getting bends right can be a pain, touch of Vaseline when making the ends gives them a smooth clean finish less drag.
Nice work!
JF. EGWO, thanks again for another great video, enjoy watching them.
Glad you enjoy it!
Excellent bit of work. JF.EGWO
Nice one Martin, practical car repairs well explained, ignore those channel haters and keep up the great content. JF.EGWO
Nice job Martin well done JF.EGWO
I've had an advisory about my rear brake pipes last MOT as they were covered in grease. That will have been me stonechipping the back end but it's protected them. If i had known that rear coil springs were easy as that to replace i would have done it on my old car that had them. Much much safer than replacing Mcpherson strut springs.
JF.EGWO
Always look forward to your videos. Just changed my brake pipes, had to change both fronts and the main pipes from front to the rear so i wouldn't have minded just doing that small section. Keep up the good work.
JF.EGWO Excellent video, don't know why they don't put copper lines in from the factory.
Probably because that would last lol
Brings back memories of when i used do this sort thing with my dad. JF.EGWO
JF. EGWO
Hi Martin another great video, some great , clear instructions, many thanks
JF.EGWO Really good brake pipe flaring demo Martin, very useful mate

Never thought pipe flaring was that easy mate. Thanks
JF.EGWO
Another great vid Martin. Always enjoy your approach as everything is done on the drive with equipment that's available to the "everyman". Keep them coming.
Thanks 👍
If.egwo another good video Martin nice to see I'm not the only one having issues with cars at the moment done a engine change on the van last week and yesterday had 2 blow outs on my trailer so feel the pain of things not going right
I thought that stuff only happened to me Pete lol
It's a good job you had the right tool's Martin. It was interesting to see that pipe flaring gadget in action.
Thanks Barbara
JF.EGWO
Great initiative Martin on that offside pipe 👍
Thanks 👍
JF.EGWO
Great video Martin shows what can be done on a driveway and save you plenty👍
Jf EGWO great work Martin keep it up, love all ur content on all Chanel’s 👍
