  • In 1972 W5 examined an incident that occurred on a flight from Churchill, Manitoba to Yellowknife.
The captain of a passenger plane spotted an object flying alongside his craft for a full two minutes. He estimates the object was traveling at over “3000 miles per hour” before it “disappeared.”
Twelve passengers and a crew of three were onboard. W5 spoke with eyewitnesses.

I was a passenger on this flight. It was a Grumman Gulfstream I aircraft, not a Grumman Tiger. We had departed Frobisher Bay (now Iqaluit), not Churchill, but we would have been in the Churchill air radio range at the time. The aircraft was owned by the pilot, Daryl Brown, and was leased to the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories. The passengers would have all been on Government business. Ron Warnick was the co-pilot.
    This is what I remember:
It was late at night and very dark outside. There were no lights on the barren lands below. All of a sudden Ron’s voice came on the intercom: “Look out the right side of the plane,” he said. “Can any of you figure out what that is?” All of the passengers rushed to look out the windows on the right side because Ron’s voice sounded very excited. What I saw was a bright light with about five smaller lights behind it and a red light at the back followed by a long comet-like tail. To me the lights seemed to be separate objects. To others they appeared to be part of one large object, the smaller lights being like windows in a large airship. Some passengers thought the whole thing was about the size of a football field. The size would depend of course on how close it was to us. I thought each light was an individual object about the size of an airplane with the first one being bigger than the others. The lights were travelling in the opposite direction to us and soon disappeared behind us. The pilots then banked the Gulfstream around 180º to try to see the object again but it was out of sight.
Ron said that what they had first seen from the cockpit was a single bright light coming towards us like another aircraft but at a higher altitude. Then it dropped down to our altitude coming straight towards us. As it got closer it veered off to our right. That is when Ron went on the intercom. Ron showed me that he had logged it as a UFO in the logbook.
The CTV W5 reenactment with other people playing the parts of the passengers going to look out the starboard windows is not quite the way it was. These “passenger” actors did not move in nearly the same hurry as we had on hearing the excitement in Ron Warnick’s voice.

I was on this flight. The re-creation is alright. However, in fact, we were all in our underwear and smoking cigarettes. I also feel like we were abducted. The “beings” gave me the following lotto numbers, 5,11,28,29,38,43.

Isn't it odd that we can get crystal clear pictures of planets light years away, yet we can't get a focused picture of a UFO right here on earth?

This is simply not true. As of 2024 the exoplanets around any stars directly imaged are a few pixels smudges at best.

Because distant planets more or less stay in the same patch of sky, or we know where they are. UFOs are unpredictable and short lived.

At minute 0:25 they say "The plane; A Northwood Airways Grumman Tiger".
This has two weird pieces of apparent misinformation (or disinformation).
First, there doesn't seem to have ever been a airline called "Northwood Airways" or "Northward Airways". Can't find it in the Wikipedia list of defunct airlines in Canada: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_defunct_airlines_of_Canada
But I did find "Northward Airlines" that went bankrupt in 1980.
Second, I can only find 2 planes that were called anything like a "Grumman Tiger", and neither of them fit the comments in the story.
The 1st is called the Grumman AA-5 Tiger, a "four-seat, light aircraft used for touring and training" (quote taken from Wikipedia).
It was definitely not big enough to have more than 2 passengers, and it's clearly not big enough for a "galley" or a "stewardess" as the pilot mentioned at minute 3:45 in the video.
The 2nd is the "Grumman F11F/F-11 Tiger is a supersonic, single-seat carrier-based fighter aircraft" (quote also taken from Wikipedia) delivered the US Navy from 1956 to the 1959 and even used by the Blue Angels from '57 to '69. So obviously not a passenger plane.
Why did W5 in 1972 pick a random unrelated plane name to introduce the story?
Northward Airlines did fly a Saunders ST-27 that might have been big-enough to have a stewardess and a galley. Hmmm.
