  • The Civil War is filled with stories of friends and family enlisting together, especially earlier in the war. Along with the communities they lived in coming together to support their soldiers as they left home. Mike Huston, a collector, shares one of these stories from Iowa. Let’s meet a group of men who banded together and became known as the University Recruits. Learn their story as soldiers that started and ended at Upper Iowa University. We are thrilled to have traveled to the University to film this episode.

There was a mayor of my town who had previously served in the 12th Iowa, and was good friends with Speaker Henderson. So much so, that Henderson helped appropriate funds for the town's first district courthouse, and even attended the funeral in Iowa.

They sound like the Apollo Squad in Company E of my regiment, 139th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. And I am a proud reenactor of the 139th PVI Company F. Logan Guards.

Great video. As a historian that relies on archival research, this video is a great example of how much university archives can offer to those interested in history. Many places, UIU included, go above and beyond to preserve items that speak about that institutions past. Well done to all!

I am thinking that the "19" and "24" on the rifles may be soldier numbers indicating 2 of the men that were issued these 2 rifles?
