School bus pre-trip and drive: 2018 Thomas C2, hydraulic brakes, exhaust brake

  • A wet, foggy morning in northern NJ with Bus 1811. We pre-trip the bus and deadhead to the first pickup. This student caught me by surprise and I almost passed their pickup, as they are rarely there in the morning!
This is one of a set of C2's we acquired recently. It hasn't been fitted with Child Check-Mate yet. See if you can find the one time I used the exhaust brake in the initial drive. The C2 exhaust brake is very aggressive, to the point where I find it unusable for regular driving around town. It's nice to have on long highway downhills, such as I-78 into eastern Pennsylvania. I much prefer the motor coaches I drive, where you can select the intensity of the engine brake.
The second clip is driving from a layover spot to the first pickup of the second school. At the end, we see one the annoying things about the C2: if the door is not fully closed, as often happens when entering the bus, activating the warning lights (intending for ambers) brings on the reds with the stop arm and crossing arm, even if you're scooting down the road. I could easily have harpooned a sign at the side of the road with the crossing arm. The driver has to remember to re-close the door after powering the bus on.

The reason the exhaust brakes on the C2s are so strong is because they have the pre selected downshift enabled by Allison, but if you were to drive a international with one they have that feature disabled so it doesn’t downshift as aggressive

Sucks it has no CCM unit hope it gets installed soon. Seems like a good bus to drive.

I think you were using it around 11:58, that kinda sounds like the VGT on the 2022 I drive.

Also, I don't find the Exhaust brake to be so strong on my C2, it is a 2022 so that may be it.

No, although a local company we recently acquired does have some. I don't have any reason to get out there and use one other than the experience of it and/or making a video, so I don't know when it would ever happen. (That location is not managed by our same location manager)

Flipped the switch at 14:51 and it was in action at 15:04 to 15:15.

Will you ever drive the third generation 2024 ic ce bus?

When we get one I'll drive it; I haven't heard anything about when that might be. We got several brand-new CE's about 2 years ago, since then we've been getting used buses
