It’s because he ( actor Manoj Kumar)suspects her of being a ghost.He’s previously engaged to his then girlfriend who is murdered and on his mom’s insistence ,reluctantly agrees to marry and asks his mom to choose the bride.( who he doesn’t see before the wedding,uncommon but believable for the time esp under special circumstances).The bride ,the actress in this song,Sadhana, looks exactly like a girl he’s seen before as a ghost but she doesn’t know or remember anything about it.However there are lots of weird occurrences that keep happening in his life.That disturbs him and but he is also attracted to her, so he keeps his distance.As his wife she is sad and confused and tries to win him over by opening her heart to him.Thats why he is so conflicted in this song and she’s crying.Very nice movie from 1964 called ‘Woh kaun thi’ or ‘who was she?’.And beautiful songs too.The actress is not singing the song.Because Indian movie songs are usually based on classical music and difficult to sing,they have real singers who sang for the actors who lip synced.This is sung by the most well known playback singer of India ,Lata Mangeshkar ,who unfortunately passed away in February this year.This was also one of her most favorite songs.
