I wonder if there were ways to get the U.S. on side through diplomacy, propaganda, political change, or economic investment/trade. The Saudis have stayed on good terms with the U.S. despite some rather concerning domestic policies for political and economic reasons. In retrospect, puppeting and assimilating a nation after inciting a coup when the former government was a U.S. ally might have been a dangerous choice. I wonder how difficult it would be to have the game communicate the most significant reasons for the war. I wonder if he could have done something differently to keep the U.S. happy. Overthrowing the U.S.-friendly Saudis and absorbing them to control all of the world's oil could have drawn U.S. attention, especially if his attempts to get out of debt through taxes increased oil prices (not sure if the AI is smart enough for that). I don't think he explicitly did anything to increase U.S. relations save for cracking down on terrorists in Iraq originally. Maybe the terrorist population increased after assimilating nations which hadn't cracked down as hard (the coups probably didn't help). Iraq probably doesn't have a focus tree because they spent like six years under complete military occupation and several more under partial occupation. Like, their primary point in MD is basically just to get invaded. Iran has one partially for historical reasons and partially because its a regional power. And that's probably the devs priority; nations that are doing the influencing are probably a lot higher priority than the ones that just get conquered shortly after the start date. It could be interesting to do an Iraq focus tree, but it would basically amount to getting beat up by America, being its puppet for several years, then dealing with rebels for several years, then getting pushed around by more powerful neighbors, then dealing with ISIS, then getting pushed around again, then then dealing with ISIS again while being pushed around. The past 20 years have not been kind to Iraq and while a focus tree might be interesting, it would also be masochistic.

Serious question… didn’t we give biological weapons to Iraq for their war against Iran? So did they use all of them or did we go back at some point and get them back …. Without telling the public because invading a county to get back our weapons is bad for future business (of giving our weapons away to proxy wars) . 🧐
I found an article about the CIA giving chemical weapons to Iraq, not biological. Still a war crime, but a very different weapon. I doubt they could take the weapons back. You can covertly give something to a country, but taking them back is hard enough to do publicly, much less covertly. Considering the unstable nature of the region, no ruler would want to give up a weapon that could help win a future war.
They used all of them. Iran and Iraq fought for ten years, with no real changes during that time. (That was why the Saudis were so desperate for American help during the first Gulf War - they were terrified of the "bloodied Iraqi army", hardened by a decade of war. Then we got there and found out they'd lost all their experienced soldiers during the war with Iran, as well as the vast majority of their war materiel. Any WMDs they hadn't used had long since expired. Did none of the "smoking gun" people ever wonder why those weapons weren't used while we were whipping their butts the first time?)
