I am a ballet dancer, and around a year ago i had to have a year long break because i had two major hip surgeries. Keep in mind i was 10-11. I found out i had hip dysplasia and that i needed surgery. But once i got back to dance, i got my first pair of pointe shoes and got into a professional summer intensive for this coming summer! It all works out eventually, and i know that i worked hard for where i am right now. So yea, that is my story. 😊 You are so tough and you got this Hannah!!
Baby steps forward are still steps forward! Even if you're not back 100% yet, I can feel the emotions emanating as you're able to finally start moving and do a little bit of dancing. It's absolutely beautiful to watch! I'm glad you have such an amazing support system! I'm not a dancer, but I'm currently experiencing a life setback. I graduated with my teaching degree right before Corona hit and closed the schools. Then I ended up getting married and moving to another country, where I don't speak the language. After a couple years of intensive language study, I finally got a job working in a primary school, just to realize that the language and culture barriers were still too much for me to bear, and had to quit before my brain burnt completely out. I'm focusing on my last language exam, and teaching a couple English courses a week, but I'm still having a really hard time shaking the feeling that I'd failed, or that I'll never be a real teacher. "Going too fast too soon" was exactly my problem. Watching your story gives me hope to know it's coming. I can completely agree with you, that we're learning something that's going to be key for the rest of our lives, but it's really darned annoying to live through! Lots of love, from halfway around the world!
I'm an ex professional figure skater. I injured my medial ligament in my knee, and that was a rough injury to come back from. Especially in a high impact sport. I got a hairline fracture in my spine from a fall once too 😬. Ouch! You just have to stay focused and take your time to recover, do all your physio work and try to stay positive if you can (but its very difficult to do when you feel frustrated!) 💖🏴⛸️
@@magdolyn you haven't failed at all! You have just gained more valuable experience which you will no doubt use in the next beautiful chapter of your journey :) never forget that!
@@lindatannock ouchie! That's tough!! But I am realising its all part and parcel of what we do. Different seasons and this season of injury I have learnt the most!
Awe Hannah soo happy our fav triple pirouette moment made it into your final cut 🥳🥳 What a humbling process and what an absolute privilege to witness your journey and help support together with Harvey, my heart is beaming with yours❤ Thank you both for being so to the pointe🥰
I do not have words to even describe how much you have helped me in this process. You have a heart of gold and I am so so happy that we crossed paths and God guided you into my life.
As you said before - dream big and make it happen, thank you and congratulations at the same time :). I also had some big setbacks in my life. While I'd rather not share them here, what I learned (and of course this is only my opinion) is that determination in the face of adversity is not dependant on the adversity you face. This means that in some circumstances it's even harder to keep and maintain this determination, but in essence - whatever hardships you face - give your all to keep going :). Wish you full recovery, lots of health and good spirits in chasing your dreams :).
The lesson is that your body has it's own timeline for healing and won't be pushed. Accepting that is the key to success! I know this from bitter experience. You will heal, but worrying about it is counterproductive. Good luck, and trust your physios, they've seen it all before.
Thank you for your vulnerability. We are all rooting for you and now it helps to know how to 🙏. Prob 3:5-6 I was struck by the power of encouragement when you needed it and for the joy and support from your team.
This touched me so deep, my back injury that i talked about a lot in other coments is getting a lot better, yesterday i competed in my first official competition since the injury and the feeling of finally getting to perform again was so amazing! Plus i did a very good job at the competition, now i look back at moments from just a month ago when i was wondering if i would compete at all and sometimes i would wonder if i would be able to do gymnastics again, I felt this video very much, the happines of seing progress on the rehab, the moments it feels like you went down or something else started to hurt (happened alot to me and lets just say i got really scared) and the feeling of finally getting to do what you love again, Thank you Hannah for this video, lets get through these hard moments together 🙏
Hey Hannah, it sounds like things have been pretty challenging, but from the end of your video, it looks like things are getting better! I can well understand that this must have been a very difficult video for you to make. You'll probably be glad of it in the future, too. Thank you for making and sharing the video! Also, from experience, I think we are at our strongest when we are at our weakest point because getting through the weakest point takes more strength than anything else. I only grew to realize this after several years, and I never feel strong when I'm at my weakest. I try to remember that I am strong and to just get through it somehow. Looking back on it afterwards is when I realize the strength it took to get through it. I find it difficult to talk about depression when I'm in a good mood so once when I was feeling really down, I made myself write out all my feelings. I sent it to a friend whose husband was struggling with depression, and she has tons of friends, family and extended family. She told me that I was the only one who seemed to understand what it was like, so I was glad that I could help someone just by recording my experience. I'm certain you are helping all kinds of people who watch your videos! Regarding patience: I think this is one of the most difficult things to learn when one is young. I've only found that I became more patient naturally as I reached my mid 30s. I think it's excellent that you are able to accept and trust the process of healing. You have some wonderful people on your team as well as your family and friends! Regarding fear: This is completely normal, and to be expected by anybody who has suffered any injury. What really helps is to block out the "what if" thoughts. This takes a lot of practice and self-discipline. I use visualization in that I imagine the unwanted, negative thought to be an ugly brownish purple blob. I imagine swinging at this blob with a baseball bat (although probably a tennis racquet, cricket bat, golf club, etc would work too) so hard that it flies right out of the stadium of my thoughts. This is mentally enjoyable, because I am unable to use my arms that way because of my chronic pain. Since you like tennis, maybe think about the unwanted, negative thought being the ball and you smashing it with an overhand smash! That sounds very satisfying to me 😁 I'm glad about the progress you've made, and I'm excited to see the next video which you hinted at near the end of this video! Wishing you all the best and sending a big imaginary hug! ❤
thank you for always sharing your nuggets of wisdom and experience. It honestly means a lot and I'm sure other commenters and viewers who scroll down here appreciate your thoughts as well. You are so generous with your time to relay them to all of us.
Thank you for your advice! I had heart surgery a couple years ago, and if my health is good now thankfully it has given me a lot of health anxieties. I like the visualization you suggest:-)
Learning to listen to your body, really listen and understand what it can do at any time, is a true sign of maturity. Try not to get discouraged. You have an amazing support system. It will all work out with time.
Thank you for sharing your journey, including the lows and the struggles. I can imagine how difficult it can be to share these, because it makes them sometimes even more alive. But having health problems since a few months making my life difficult, and thus preventing me from working as I would like to realize my dreams, this video gave me hope and made me feel better 🫶
The break in your usual daily routine, I think, it has worked for the good for you, in a funny sort of a way, as I can see, that your dancing becomes more and more magical. Best wishes for your full recovery.
Oh man, I get subluxations, in my left knee which makes it twisted, and I can't straighten it properly, on the daily. I feel you. Coming back from surgery with hypermobility, seems to take longer and is so frustrating. In my case, I was reaching all the range of motion markers, but not the strength. Thank you for making your videos, even when it's hard.
Hi Hannah ! My heart goes out to you.. amazing focus 🙏🏻 I’m really struggling with a shoulder situation.. I can’t use my port de bras and am swollen etc .. ugh .. Thank u for sharing and inspiring ♥️🕊💪🙏🏻
@HannahMartinRG It has been a pleasure to watch you evolve as a dancer and a gymnast. You are truly inspirational ❤ I am going to be in Birmingham to see a band in June and you have inspired me to try a Kulapoke 😆
Hi Hannah, I've been following your journey for a while now, though a first time commenter. As a serious amateur ballet dancer coming back from my own injury/rehab journey (a pointe injury that resulted in torn ankle ligaments, which triggered lower limb complex regional pain syndrome- 10/10 do not recommend!) I completely understand the pain and frustration, and yes, the cascade injuries from overuse (tib post. syndrome on my non-injured ankle, which did all the load bearing for the 6 months I was on crutches, and medial knee pain in both knees for me). I spent most of this video, going, oh yeah, been there! And cheering you on in all the 'firsts', because the firsts are so important in the journey! I've spent the last two years on the recovery/rehab rollercoaster working on getting back to where I was, and while I'm not completely there yet, in some ways I'm already stronger because of all the focused work I've had to put in. As I'm sure you're finding yourself, this period gives you a chance to work on strengthening for the long term, which is a wonderful gift in itself. It horrible having to be patient and having to rest at times, but it really is the best thing for you. You will not only be back to where you were, but you'll be even stronger than you were before all this happened.
thank you so much for sharing your story. It makes me feel as though I'm not alone, and forgive myself for the other flare ups, reminding me that it is natural for other things to happen when increasing the load again.
your doing such and amazing job going through all of this. your so inspirational to dancers who have had or have injuries. very proud of watching this compared to when you first injured your ankle. Well Done Hannah!! 🥰
Hannah, I'm overly delighted for you, that your surgery was a success.🥰 It is soooooo reassuring to see your successful recovery after having gotten your extra bone removed. I just had my Os Trigonum surgery on both feet around Christmas time, but unfortunately, I'm still only allowed to do physio and conditioning.😞I can’t wait to finally be dancing again, hopefully, sooner than later - it's already been way too long! Hannah, how long did it take for you to be able to properly point your foot again? I'm afraid mine are 'stuck' - if you'd be willing to elaborate on that a bit or even share some before and after pics that would be great. :) Thanks for sharing your experiences with the world!❤
thank you! Wow! Wishing you much luck on your journey! It certainly fixed the problems I was having on my left foot completely. So happy I got it out. If you watch some of my previous recovery vlogs you can see the gradual process of stiffness and scar tissue build up. I show it visually so it might be helpful for you to take a look? :)
Regarding how cold it is in your apartment, here's another tip that might help a little: toe warmers. I used to use them for skiing. They have an adhesive side which you stick to the underside of your socks. You can put on slippers or shoes or ski boots but probably not ballet shoes! They are usually available for purchase in sporting outfitters stores, or you can probably order them by the box online. Keeping your head, wrists, ankles, hands, and feet warm is essential but you probably know that already. It cannot help your recovery to be very cold for hours on end so bundle up! I hope you're doing better today! Good luck! ❤
@@HannahMartinRGGood! I had seen a documentary about the Paris Ballet Opera (?) students and some of them were wearing these “warm up dance booties” in the evenings. I just looked them up online and you can get them for £30 approx. There’s even a New York Magazine article which advises these would be excellent slippers for anybody who suffers from cold feet. I know there has to be a good “cold feet” joke/pun but I can’t think of one right now! 🧤🧣🧦👑 I couldn’t find the warm woolly hat emoji so I’m awarding you a crown instead!
