    Porco Rosso has been and always will be my favourite Miyazaki. The section where he flies high enough to see the spirits of all the departed pilots? *chef's kiss*
    Thanks for reminding me of the first Cardcaptor Sakura movie too, I was a big fan of the manga and the anime, so when the film was released, it was not entirely what I was expecting- there's something about certain scenes and sound composition that just *hits different* and I still love it.
    Favourite overall? Very hard to choose, but I'm going to go with Perfect Blue. What a film.

      My Neighbor Totoro or Nausicaa easily beat out Porco Rosso, although it's good of course. Royal Space Force or Patlabor 2 would be 1 and 2. I could change them around depending but Perfect Blue is great as well. Maybe in my top 20. Pity Kon passed away so early,12 years now. The fact that he worked with Oshii on Patlabor 2 only makes that film even better.

    It's a shame that there hasn't been another director like Yoshiaki Kawajiri. Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, I love the style of those films. There is no modern studio that is willing to go that dark anymore.

    • @Stevem
      @Stevem  Год назад +12

      If we're talking movies that's because the markets that used exists don't , many if those titles thrived on the rental market and DVD boom. Kawajiri has tried for years to make a ninja scroll 2 but that's a title in which the original was far more popular overseas to begin and japanese investors have not been interested

    As a kid, I would have loved something like this. I couldn't afford entire series on DVD (no streaming back then), so DVDs were the way to go. I preferred films over series because I didn't have to worry about "completing" the series or needing to find THAT ONE EPISODE you're missing.
    I will definitely look up some of these.
    I love what you did here because there is a lot of popular films that always become top 10 for people, and they ignore a lot of gems, specially from past decades over what they already know.

    Thank you for this video (and for the Hideaki Anno video, loved it a lot). I think the somewhat academic commentary you give elevates into real novelty something that has been done so many times before, a top X of all time list, and I appreciated that in the other video as well. Essentially, you often talk about the things I can't learn by just watching the work, which I appreciate. Even though I have, relative to the average person, seen so many anime, I get jealous when I see someone able to so exquisitely put them into context, either by their history, the works they were influenced from and went on to influenced, the directorial, writing, and animation staff, or the techniques being used in that era. I can barely keep my anime character's names straight let alone staff and what they've worked on - at this point my only hope is to just keep watching anime and keep watching enriching videos like yours hoping something will stick so, again, thank you.

    This is an excellent top 100 anime list, with plenty of deep cuts that proudly gives it a place of honour beside Paste's and the one done by Mike Toole. Well done!
    As every true anime fan would say though, you of course missed the best one: 'The Tale of Princess Kaguya' by Isao Takahata. However it's well known enough that I don't mind it being missed from this list. One glaring omission, however, is the animated films and shorts personally directed by Osamu Tezuka. A lot of anime fans don't realise that Tezuka felt more strongly towards his animated features than his (gargantuan output of) manga works. They're super avant-garde and bold in a way that put most anime films to shame even 50 years later! There are several collections that have them, such as 'The Astonishing Work of Tezuka Osamu' ('Portraits at an Exhibition' is my favourite), I urge you to check them out if you haven't already.
    Besides that, notable omissions from your list that I feel compelled to mention include:
    - A Wind Called Amnesia
    - Colourful
    - Robot Carnival (best anime anthology imo)
    - Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade (I know you touched on it under the Oshii section but anything less than a strong recommendation is selling it short)
    Once again, fantastic work and can't wait to see what's next from this channel!

    • @Stevem
      @Stevem  Год назад

      -So Kaguya is fine what I prefer his other work basically
      -Wolf brigade I'd consider on the list but as it's the classic section I don't feel compelled to break it down
      -I hate winds of amnesia
      -Robot carnival is an ova not film
      -Have not seen colourful I'm afraid
      But glad you enjoyed the list

    Thank you for the list! Some of mine I would add and recommend are Kite and the Garden of Sinners. Even though Kite was only able to be made because they got the funding from people who wanted to make a certain genre of anime (not saying it here), it’s beautiful and has a story that personally hit me hard. Garden of Sinners is a series of films from the 2000s that have insane animation, interesting supernatural mysteries, and a main character(s) who are like none I’ve ever seen in anime. I love them both!

    You have done a good job talking about a lot of these films. Better than many other bigger channels. I'm part of what might be the first or second generation of anime fans. I can just barely remember seeing the black and white Kimba The Lion episodes when they came out in the west. The golden age of anime really has to be from around 81' or so , Arcadia Of My Youth,Urusei Yatsura,to around 97'. A lot of popular anime now just feels lifeless and safe compared to a lot of experiments that were going on then.
    The Royal Space Force is an amazing film that you won't see made now in this age of recycled ideas and franchises. Such a bold first film that didn't do well in large part due to goofball films like Project Ako.
    Oshii's films,Angel's Egg is the closest we have ever come to seeing Amano's stuff come to life,are some of the best,most adult,anime out there. Patlabor 2 is definitely a contender for top 5 of all time. The zen like mood of that film and the commentary on politics and the people who make decisions that ruin lives is pretty remarkable stuff in animation.
    You did mention them but really Oshii's Beautiful Dreamer and Miyazaki 's My Neighbor Totoro deserve far more than just a quick mention. Nausicaa is one of his best films ,better than anything in the 2000's,so you get points for that. Both films can be seen as one of the starting points for Studio Gainax since Anno and Yamaga worked on them. The End Of Eva is very interesting,the new films are just garbage. I had interest back in 2007 for the first rebuild but it never really seemed like there was any plan for the movies and the last Eva film was so bad I had to shut it off after Shinji said in the worst Engrish "It's A Neon Genesis Evangelion". Wooff it was cringe. The entire thing felt like something they came up with while drinking and writing the story on some napkins at the bar. After 10 years it felt like a huge waste of time and a cash grab that was only finished out of obligation.
    Good job on talking about Night On The Galactic Railroad although Sugi also made The Tale of Genji which is very interesting. Pity it's never been released on disc. The Dagger Of Kamui is also interesting. And I love Grave Of The Fireflies but Only Yesterday is my favorite Takahata film. Shame you didn't mention The Tale of Princess Kayuga,not much else has been better in the last 10 years.
    X is an amazing looking film, remember seeing it in a limited theater run back in 97'. The fact that it's never been released on Blu Ray,Manga didn't always do a good job with their transfers which is why they get the name ,Mangle entertainment. But overall you did a good job even for someone like me that has been watching anime for over 40 years.

    • @Stevem
      @Stevem  Год назад

      I've seen dagger sure it's interesting maybe a little all over the place in narrative but the style is all there, I mean the golden age historically is usually considered the 60s-70s though that term isn't really the same as what I think is best, the industry is one of booms and busts you'll only really see risks in boom periods Im not here to say one age is better or worse as someone who does animate I'm pretty invested in the new technology s making it ever more possible for anyone to make ambiguous work on their own or with a couple people

      @@Stevem I'm not as much into modern anime. I do have stuff from the modern area,Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is probably one of the few things that's impressed me over the last 10 years. I do agree that it's good that smaller, independent artists can create work. After all that's how Gainax got started. The 60's and 70's were when a lot of big stuff got started for sure but really anime didn't take off till the early 80's. And I just haven't seen anything yet that's reached the pinacle of works like Patlabor 2,Legend Of The Galactic Heroes ECT. Plus with the passing of artists like Kon,who was called the savior of anime at one point,and the breaking of of Gainax and the slow falling apart of Ghibli,I don't see anything replacing them anytime soon.

      @@Stevem Totoro is probably his most personal work,dealing as it does with his own mother having tuberculosis,and it deals with pain and loss in a way that his other works don't. He really reached back into his most painful and joyous parts of his childhood. The dread of loss that a young child can't articulate is very powerful. Plus Totoro is such a powerful creation of peace and simplicity that it gives the movie a feeling unlike any of his other works. I'm not a fan of nostalgia,I don't have much nostalgia for anything,but Totoro does nostalgia better than almost any other film I've seen. Sublime without being overbearing. And the father is much like the dad from Something Wicked This Way Comes. He has grown up but hasn't quite lost connection with his childhood as he almost sees Totoro. Nausicaa might be his most important work but Totoro might be his most meaningful. Kaygua is pretty great. Granted it's not for everyone as most of Takhata's stuff is ,much like Oshii actually,but that film felt very fresh and original even though it's based on a very old story. If you are interested,and you may already have these ,you might want to check out the books-Anime from Akira to Howl's Moving Castle by Susan J.Napier,Stray Dog Of Anime the films of Mamoru Oshii by Brian Ruh,Hayo Miyazaki by Helen McCarthy and anything by Frederik L.Schodt who was friends with Tezuka and has pretty crazy knowledge of the industry. Either way you did a good job with the video and your taste is good so great job.

    What do you think comes to mind when people picture the “anime aesthetic” cause a lot of media mostly share interpretations based on the time period. Like most 80s OVA’s or films feature cyber-punk type setting but even then it can be one set in a dystopian future or a reimagining of the past. Fantasy settings can use supernatural themes in either a dark or gothic way or a more magical and whimsical style, so what is your ideal picture for the many different settings or themes used in anime or manga? Also I was constantly checking back on the Anno video since the first short preview and have been checking back since for the full video and it was defiantly worth the wait

      i once helped with interviews at my uni at the time and my tutors saw an illustration that to me looked like the bratz kinda a fashion thing too and he goes is that "anime" and i ripped him for it because i could not see how he got to that conclusion. The Aesthetic is in the eye of the beholder I dont think anime has a specific look it's always changing with technology and the times .

      @@Stevemyeah that’s true like, how when people nvision a future setting it can be either just surface level like a cyberpunk city with advanced technology like Ghost in the Shell or the point where space travel becomes the norm like most mecha, so I guess it also lies in the creators visions as well interesting to think about

      @@Beatlefan333 the production methods of the time are also pretty important , the 80s ovas and shows tended to go very black in space and then do a fair bit of backlighting on vehicles, nowadays though because of how techniques have changed space will be shown much pretty and rendered , likely in colours and with star clustersin a way not possible in the 80s
