You commenting “it’s almost shaped like a cross” is entirely accurate. A lot of old churches and cathedrals were intentionally shaped that way. Symbolism was huge for religious art and architecture, so they made the buildings themselves shaped like that.
Edit: I think it might have also had a functional use as well. Can’t remember exactly, but I think it might have helped with structural stability. Having a cross section to break up the massive main wall helped give it support.

I had a friend who was an Episcopal reverend. Looking down on her church building, it was shaped as a dove: Kind of modern with arching windows where the wings were. It was beautiful. *Wait, no, not arched, but kinda concave swooping up.

    Episcopal/Anglican minister here:
Love the cruciform for the sanctuary. Would love to see a choir loft with an organ on the second floor.
I don’t know how realistic this would be for gameplay, but having a sacristy in the rear of the church would be realistic for ecclesiastical architecture. Maybe a place for sims to get ready before a wedding?
Many churches have a separate chapel. Maybe making a separate chapel that’s more medieval connected to the basement with a priest’s hole? Maybe even a grotto with a small water feature? Both could make the lot more mysterious.
Love seeing the progress on this build! The suggestion of having a kitchen in the basement for get-togethers or church functions is a wonderful idea. Children’s play areas or Sunday School rooms. Teen hangout area with games/gaming consoles would make the lot multifunctional.
Community gardens, graveyard or columbarium. A wonderful church in my area has a beehive initiative and sells honey for charitable donations! Looking forward to see the possibilities

Hey Aden, loving this build. How about putting a little annex on the side of the church, in like the typical 70's/80's build style you usually see in Cornwall and around the UK, where they just put a pebble-dashed, flat-roofed rectangle on the side or back of the main church that has no character whatsoever, which gets named after an elderly parishioner who used to do a lot of fundraising for the community and then died, so it's called The Sheila Titslapp Annex, and is used like a small church hall/community room where little craft markets/indoor fetes and things could be set up, and it could be hired out for parties and have a little Sunday School room, or be used as a playgroup setting, so there would be a little kitchen and toilet inside too, with a wheelchair access ramp etc. Just an idea :) Hope you, Tom and Daisy are well x

A couple of ideas for St. Henry's: 1) On the upper portion of the steeple, put in a bell tower (?) don't know how common they are in cathedrals/churches or if that's more romanticized or I'm thinking of old schools...
    2) I don't know if they would've originally put it in, but maybe a small kitchen in the basement to provide meals to the homeless and destitute?

Im imgaging he helped fund the construstion of the church so would have laid one of the stones. They normaly say "This foundation stone was laid by" Incert name "On" Incert date. A few ideas for the church:
-There should be some kind of Sunday school room either in the basement or on the upper floor
    - Im picturing some kind of more contemporary looking event space in the basement with a kitchen, tables, etc for church events. Seems realistic in a modern church
-I’m picturing an atic space in that top area, possibly with a rooftop balcony on the rear of the church there, some kind of storage space with access to the bell tower
-I’m picturing a crypt in the graveyard with tunnel access to the basement of the church, seems creepy and could work in the plot line
    - I’m picturing some kind of reception space inside the front doors, just seems more realistic than walking directly into the chapel, possibly that could be where the Sunday school space is and stairs up/down?
    - the pastor definitely needs an office/ private space, some kind of private confession area would be nice
    - a baptismal pool would be interesting, especially one sort of hidden off in the basement could add to the creep factor?
Feel free to use any of these ideas! Love the vid

The church that I went to as a child had two areas that I thought were cool. First, the organ bay was very dramatic in a balcony area above in above the entrance to the church. Then, being a Catholic Church, there was a gated area off to the left of the entrance where the baptismal faunt was located… also very dramatic and dimly lit, which made us wonder what else might be behind those gates. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out! 😊😊

In Greyfriar's Churchyard in Edinburgh they have a bunch of graves with grates over them because in the 19th century, bodies for dissecting in medical schools were hard to come by and stealing bodies from graves was a lucrative business - it would be such a cool detail to have graves with some kind of grate over them! And it would also be really cool and spooky to have one or two little crypts for the richer people of Henford to have been buried in.

  • @crimsonskies1987

Again another beautiful build. You never cease to create! I like the idea of a hidden room maybe under the church or an empty crypt, one where historically people may have been kept - like when Hopkins used churches to interrogate "witches" or when the Christians held catholics down in church crypts in darkness until they spoke, but maybe the Vicar or his predecessor found it and decided to use it as a room where they have kept religious or ancient collectibles *hello debug my old friend* however.....they think they're the only ones to know about it until one day the Vicar walks in and finds a rusted metal knife amongst the Relics still covered in blood. But wait there's more there is a boot print in the room and there is blueberries squashed into sole of the boot print. These rare and prestigious Blueberries are grown in only one prestigious garden...Haddenham Hall.
So I also thought this could be a completely different plot. For centuries Daddy Vladdy has had fans who do his bidding in the hopes he will choose to turn them. 200 years ago Vladdy Daddy Came to town and desecrated the church by hiding all their Relics and stolen treasures in a sealed wall they didn't notice. One of his most loyal fans was the wife at Hadden Hall, she helped him seal it and in return he gave her just a taste of his food, for many years she had to disappear and come back until she met ger husband, she's waning in life after 200 years. But Vlad has a plan for Henford on Bagley, if she does one evil act like... kill her husband. He will finally turn her after 200 years and join the army of vampires he has hiding down in the sewers of Windenberg and other spots where other mystical sims are vulnerable for food.

That could be really cute for gameplay. I've also seen one or two that have some copper roofs, and now they've turned to that patina green. You could try a green metal roof on the smaller side roofs. And I know it would take extra work, but it could be cool to have the graves of one or two ancestors of the current sims. Maybe this is too realistic, but church graves always face the east (sunrise) and the richer a person was the closer they would be buried to the altar on the east end of the church.

There’s a great book by Ken Follet (and and an okay TV series) called Pillars of the Earth about the building of a fictional Cathedral. I was immediately reminded of it as you were putting in the “spires”. As one storyline saw the builders attempting to beat out the builders of another Cathedral (may have been Salisbury) for the tallest Cathedral in Christendom. Medieval church builders found ways to make their churches taller to be “closer to God’. The craftsmanship and creativity of the builders was incredible; especially considering they didn’t have modern methods and equipment. Towns sprung up around the building of these Cathedrals and Churches and the skilled artisans, architects and leaders who drove the creation of these marvels where able to build communities that eventually went on to become a class that challenged the constraints of the Medieval Feudal system. Henry Henford may have been one such builder and his drive to create a building that honoured God led him to be made Saint Henry.

There’s actually a religion mod with a bunch of made-up sims religions which would go perfectly with this build! You can have people work for the “church” etc too. Definitely something I’d do for gameplay. This family are my favourite so far for sure ❤

I recommend a few mausoleums in the graveyard which may add some intrigue and secret path. Also, a living space for the vicar or priest and one nun.

Love a good church ngl, from my experience of my own church as a kid, they tend to have a separate area or even building for a kitchen/living area for the priest and even a dressing area for when people come for baptisms and holy communions

Hows about adding a church hall coming out the side. I made one with CC and has a stage in it and then some selling tables where the locals can come and do little market stalls :) funds for the church roof 😝

I think it would be cool if there was a lil library/meditative quiet space for contemplating church stuff. Someone else mentioned a space for a church choir club and I think that’d actually be really cool too.

  • @Emilchen_

I am not religious but I do remember that a lot of pastors have like a little house adjacent or near the church. I know that this is connected to the story line of the previous build but one could make it full of spider webs and dusty furniture. Or the person taking care of the graveyard could life there
Also there is a mod by Lumpinou (hope I spelled that right) that introduces religion 🙈 so a space for worship would be cool. Maybe you can add the politician speech thingy in it, so it looks a bit like people listening to their pastor
Otherwise a bit of space for community projects since many churches do that a lot, or just a play area for children, Sunday school, bible study room, library with religious texts(maybe some cool statues in there), a choir
If you want to be super realistic than I think(again not religious) there is also structural changes on the inside because of the way mass is performed between Catholics and Protestants.(like a confessional, separation of pastor and attendees..)
This is very small detail but one that drives me insane. Flyers, my neighborhood is primarily not Christian but there is one evangelical church and since we moved here we get their flyers in our mailbox every other day it feels like 😅. So if there is like a small storage player where a ton of flyers lie around that would complete it

Gorgeous build, and your music choices always fit perfectly with whatever you’re building, love it!
    Ideas!
    1) Not particularly useful in gameplay, but some sort of confession booth would be fun.
    2) Maybe Father McDaddy has redone a small storage room into a makeshift little apartment, where troubled teens etc could take refuge for a little while?
    3) On the teens note, maybe there’s an after school hang out down in the basement, where the kids can socialize and relax, all under the watching eye of our Lord.
    4) Okay, this is a bit more out there, but it would be sorta cool if you made a secret tunnel into a crypt (sorta like the sewers in Moonwood Mill), and the crypt could either be a vampire nest, or a party place for the teens that should be behaving themselves back in the main area of the basement.
I can’t wait for the continuation of this, we’ll done!
