taibhsear71 My mother in laws birthday was right after spring break, which my husband and I took a trip at that time every year. Of course things are on sale that time of year. I got her this beautiful coach purse with matching wallet, she gave me the wallet and said she liked the purse. Used the purse for a couple weeks then said here you can have it back. Then the next year for her bday I got her this massage and mani & pedi gift card that was expensive, she never used it and ended up giving it to me for my Christmas present!!!!! The third year I’m in Vegas, in this Italian bag shop in one of the nice hotel/casinos. They only sold these bags in Italy, New York and at this shop in Vegas. They were very pricey but they were having a sale so I thought oh why not. Mind you my mother in law is full Italian, her parents from Italy. So I buy her this beautiful white leather purse with a silver buckle, I bought myself one in a brown color. I give it to her for her bday, she acts like she loves it, I see her a couple weeks later for Sunday dinner, she’s still using it. Well the next week she tells me that a co worker made a comment about how beautiful the bag was and how it seemed more “ooh lala” then what they see her with. No joke couple days later she gives it back to me. I finally told me husband “I’m done buying your mother things for her birthday”. I had also bought her other gifts over the years for other holidays n such and she would do the same or give it away. What’s crazy about this is she’s super wealthy, but doesn’t like to show any wealth of any kind. So by someone making a comment about her bag, she I guessed felt it was too “flashy”. Idk, all I know is I stopped putting in effort into gifts for her that she is impossible to please. You should see Christmas at her home...

Instead of me saying “she’s your mom not mine”, not buying her things or helping my husband pick out things for HIS Mother, I went out of my way to help. I went out of my way to rally get her nice, beautiful gifts that I thought she’d like, even at one point his other two brothers would have me help them get things for her. I put in all this effort for His Mom and never did I get a thank you, or she’d end up giving it back, regifting, etc. It really hurt my feelings.
So I could have saved myself a lot of time, effort, kindness, energy, not get my feelings hurt had I been like “she ain’t my mom, I don’t gotta shop for her”.
Do you get what I’m sayin?

In our family we celebrate all the women on Mother’s Day, maybe not with gifts but at least a card and flowers and a nice dinner. Even though they didn’t give birth to me, all of my aunts and grandmothers deserve respect for the role they played in helping raise us. Ditto for Fathers Day.
