Great teach, thanks to everyone involved. Without this teach I wouldn't be able to run and teach this game for the first time playing 18xx.

Thanks for sharing! Just found out about playing 1889 online and this video really helped me get a feel for the game: great stuff!

1:25:20 "If I don't lay track, I'm not obligated to operate which means I won't go back in value." That is definitely not a rule in 1889, or really any 18xx I can think of. Without a legal route you're not obligated to own a train in this one, but you still have to operate, and if you have a zero dividend, your stock price goes back.

Yup. That got corrected shortly thereafter. Good catch, Phil, and good catch us👍🏼

I want to play more 18xx so much.
Only played 1846 and it's amazing need to play way more.

The fact that Jess sat with the mining private company and no public company to utilize the zero cost terrain penalty must have impacted the way the everyone else laid their tracks. It was interesting to see this huge mountain in the middle of the map all the way into the last couple of ORs :)

Wow! What a stream! 6 hours!!! And I watched it all... that's how interesting it was. I'm not an 18xx person myself, but I can really see the attraction and the fun you guys get out of these games. I'm tempted to find out a bit more about these games, because I love trains and route building and shares and everything. Thank you guys!!! :)

If you love trains, route building, and shares, then your assessment that you're "not an 18xx person" may need revising :-)

@@AndyPymont Yes, I'll have to take another look. I think what puts me off 18xx games, based on what I have seen from the outside looking in, is the game length and the mathyness. I prefer to make decisions out of the pit of my stomach than by using a calculator, if you see what I mean. However, as I say, I'll definitely take another closer look to make sure I'm not missing out on a whole world of amazing games. :)

@@TabletopGamesBlog There's a lot of arithmetic, but it feels automatic to me. It's rare that decisions require detailed calculation; usually rough approximations are fine, and mostly implicit for me. More concretely, I don't think "I'm going to sell 3 shares for $90 and float at $100, buy 2x 3T for $360..." Instead, I think "now's when I need to float a company to best leverage my capital and reduce opponents revenue by (indirectly) rusting the 2Ts"

@@MauveAlerts I guess like with any games, the more you play them, the more natural they feel. As I say, I'll take a closer look at 18xx games, because there is a lot I like - and hopefully I can overcome my concerns. :)

That meme of an SR3 though...
Edward: I am ok with keeping the red company and not starting a new one at 90...
Everyone: We don't care! (everyone keeps their red stock)
Edward: Alright it seems that I am gonna dump it after all! I will start pink at 90!
    Kaon: You liar! Traitor!
    Edward: Wait what?
Jess: Oh sweet sweet priority deal! All your shares are belong to us! Hehehe!

Those are some cheap trains. How much was the yen worth at that time?

Nice! But I think Andrew suggest to others some bad tactics. Awa should not buy that 4 train. It wil rust. If awa buys 5 train in due time it will make money.

This playthrough would have been a lot more entertaining if everybody shared their thought processes more. Get the feeling that some of the players are playing too much to win and not enough to entertain.

We try to do this as much as possible. We're extremely cognizant of 'thinking out loud' and sometimes it's more successful than others. Appreciate your feedback.

@@Heavycardboard Hi Edward. I wanted to add to my original comment above which was a little blunt because I was busy at the time. I appreciate that the other players are very new to 18xx and are still learning the pitfalls and pratfalls of the system. I certainly didn't tune in expecting to see advanced game play, not really capable of that myself :), but just hearing the reasoning for peoples actions would help with people watching during (and after) the event. There were definitely times when people articulated their strategy for that round so it isn't as if it was a monastic experience :) , but just something to keep tabs on.
I did enjoy the stream even if I was a bit bewildered at times how Kotohira (the most valuable city on the board) stayed yellow. :) Thanks and I look forward to more 18xx on the channel. All the best Jonathan
