Imo, you are 100% correct about not being responsible for the behavior of others, and also about tarot being a luxury. Unfortunately not everyone has equal access to the same things, and I’m more concerned with the fact that not everyone in the world has basic necessities.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I've also been watching beauty tube, booktube and boardgame tube for years and agree that these issues have already been dealt with in other, more established, communities. When I came to tarot tube last year I was surprised that most 'reviews' were actually fairly positive, bordering on gushing, walkthroughs. I think because tarot is such a small world and because these decks typically represent years of a creator's time and devotion, reviewers are hesitant to criticize decks. It seems that the positive reviews come from a genuine and non-cynical place, but I would appreciate reviews being more balanced. Or perhaps an update of how decks are working for them after a few months. I have come to rely on decluttering videos, top 10 videos and year end videos to give me better advice on how decks are working for people, and use walkthroughs just to see the lovely art. I do think there could be more clarity when people receive free decks for review. This upfront explanation is now expected in other communities, with the more respected reviewers refusing free merchandise to ensure it doesn't bias reviews. I don't think anyone is being shady, I just think it's best practice to be as upfront as possible. Fully agree that if people are choosing to click on a deck walkthrough video, they shouldn't be surprised to see a lovely deck being showcased. How would a trigger warning even help in this case? I hope that doesn't sound cold. And also agree that showing pricing isn't helpful because of different currencies and price fluctuations.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts 🥰 Totally makes sense that you rely on declutter videos etc. I had the same experience coming into tarottube and seeing all these positive deck reviews and what you’re saying about the tarot community being small makes sense. I think we need to get away from the idea that not liking a deck is a direct insult to the artist or creator of it.
Some people agreed with many of her points, including me. She’s having an external processing session and people mirror her feelings so with that open discussion happening more people are acknowledged and given a voice where there is none. She’s protesting her own personal struggles with consumerism and economic disparity and a consumer making an honest review… some of the most valuable content out here is the stuff no one is willing to point out or say. I prefer honesty and sincerity over product producers feelings. I reviewed 4-5 reviews of The Spacious Tarot and not one mentioned the deck was unshuffable and stiff.
Yess honesty and integrity in deck reviews is so important! Cardstock is a big part in the experience of a tarot deck too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🥰
Hey Ruby! So glad you touched about this topic. I just want to mention that Mixtress Rae did clarify in a recent video that she made a mistake when it came to the deck creator of Ritual Tarot.. Although, honestly, I still think it was still unnecessary to call the creator out when she initially had no idea how much it takes to make a deck, let alone an indie deck which is not mass-produced. I felt like the video was emotionally charged, and not to say that she has no right to mention her thoughts and feelings about it - I do feel that she was misdirecting a lot of the frustration onto people who didn't necessarily really deserve them. I'm also kinda in your situation, although except tarot and oracle decks, even mass-produced, could easily go up to RM180 in my country, because currency exchange over here just sucks. That was why I'm gutted that Book Depository is closing since it was my only way to get decks for much cheaper and with free shipping, mind you. Indie decks, like, say, for Ritual Tarot, could easily go up to RM500 in my country, and that excludes shipping and customs fees. That's why I would never be able to afford indie decks, and I simply rely on mass-produced decks. Either way, I still considered myself somewhat privileged because I do have more than 10 decks in my collection, and I only got into tarot last October. Do I wish I am able to buy an indie deck? Hell fuck yes, but I won't be paying RM500 just for a deck, no matter how much I really like or want them so badly. Do I think the tarot tubers need to be mindful of those who can't afford decks that they could? No, I think that would be just.. ridiculous, to be quite honest. Like you said, I think people can only be responsible for themselves and how they manage their money, etc. I digress though, I do think Mixtress Rae had good intentions and just simply want to make a comment, but I don't think she did a good job to articulate her emotions well - and she did admit that in her recent update post.
Oooh I feel you on the high indie deck prices + shipping + customs + VAT 😭 About Book Depository closing, I saw an Instagram post going around about alternatives. The account is thisisaudsomee. I recently purchased from Wordery which I had a good experience with. They also mention: Better World Books, Book Outlet, Kennys, and a lot more. Worth to check it out! Thanks for sharing your thoughts 💖
I also started in the BeauTube community. It ended up becoming extremely exhausting and made me want to buy SO MUCH!! I ended up having to go cold turkey and just not watch anymore. I do think people don't realize that people are not being critical because they disagree with the topic, but because of the misrepresentation of the situation of another member of the community.
Yesss I also got burnt out from makeup content. I had a HUGE makeup collection and luckily I was able to down-size quite a bit. I still have trouble letting go of my eyeshadow palettes though 🙈 I think you're right about that last part too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 💖
when I do Tarot unboxing, I rarely comment much (so I think people make their own decisions-not that I do them soon after they're released). I acknowledge that I am INCREDIBLY privileged by my country's standards, and when I watch videos like that I can't help but feel a certain kind of way because it screams “First World Problems” (i'm probably going to get a lot of hate for saying that-but I'll say it). I never ever even consider ever purchasing an indie deck because shipping alone is 40 bucks & i can live with that because I have other priorities so I live with the decks that are accessible to me and that I can afford. And I'm one of the posher readers because at least I don't buy bootleg decks. I'm very grateful for what I have. It almost feels crass to hear an American complain about it (sorry, but it really gets on my nerves). We're not taking about malnourishment here. Everyone wants to be accommodated & get “special” treatment these days. People need to grow-up. I would love to have a helicopter & a private jet, but i don't want aircraft owners to “be mindful” of my delicate feelings because I can't afford that stuff. Let them enjoy life off what they earned through their hard work, or the family they were born into. What happened to just being happy for people? By the way, living in the Netherlands is a privilege as the quality of life is higher than the US (as of 2023 statistics). Mind you, before 2023, when I attended Universiteit Leiden I had an American classmate who seems rather shocked to see no homelessness in the Netherlands. Thank you for sharing. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🩵🩵🫶🏼 Sorry if I offended anyone.
I totally understand what you're saying! Yes in regards to quality of life overall, it's a privilege to live in the Netherlands VS the USA right now. I was talking strictly about tarot decks & shipping, because I am very happy to live where I live. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts 💖
I think this conversation is interesting and I’m liking hearing all the viewpoints. Whether I agree or not is beside the point. What I can’t get over about is people thinking they need to act on what someone is saying, like messages sent to TM. I don’t understand why they felt the need to be MR’s Knight in Shining Armour. It creates a bad feeling overall, and it’s in the back of my mind when I say something that I think may not be the accepted view. Can we see your puppy at some point? All I saw briefly are flappy ears jumping up and down. 😍
🖤🖤🖤 Yes! Personal responsibility is so important. I personally don’t really do deck specific unboxing/reviews anymore because it’s not what I really enjoy doing, but I appreciate when I hear honest opinions about a deck when I’m researching one I want to purchase. But even if someone is absolutely tearing apart a deck, and I still want it I don’t let their opinion sway me. The same with positive reviews, I like to hear why maybe someone enjoys the deck and if that aligns with what I’m looking for then I’ll go for it. I’ve realized I am a little bit of a card stock snob, as in if I can’t shuffle it I don’t want it. So I want honesty about things like that. I’ve heard people say shit card stock is nice and vice versa but I try to seek reviewers out that actually riffle shuffle their decks 😂 and sometimes that’s hard cause some reviewers don’t include things like that
Yess I totally get that! And sometimes someone’s reason for not wanting a deck is the exact reason I do want it and vice versa. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🥰
Ruby while I do agree generally with several of your points, I find a part of your reaction here disappointing. You talk about giving trigger warnings for abuse or eating disorders, but when it comes to addiction you suddenly say “don’t watch” as if addiction is something easily controlled or a choice. I agree we cannot fully take on the responsibility of other peoples lives or how they react to us but where is your compassion here? If addiction was a choice it wouldn’t be a disease. People wouldn’t be suffering from it. They would just stop because it’s horrible to experience. It is literally a disorder of the brain. Normal logic like “just don’t watch” or “just don’t over spend” “don’t make poor purchasing decisions” do not apply. To me this is very victim blaming. Imagine speaking this way to people with other issues you would trigger warn against…. (And I’m not saying we have to give warnings all the time, I actually don’t agree with that, but I do think we should show empathy to people suffering…) I’ve seen you show great and admirable compassion to other mental health issues before so why is it so many lack compassion for addiction? It truly breaks my heart. This was a key component to MR’s video and something she often discusses on her channel but somehow it’s being brushed aside in a lot of these reaction videos. Anyways, I hope you please consider my words. Thank you.
Hi Rachel. Thank you for your comment, sharing your thoughts and I am considering your words. I will say that I understand that me validating trigger warnings about one thing and then coming across being invalid about other trigger warnings doesn't come across very compassionate. I know that addiction is very misunderstood and I want to offer my apologies about contributing to that in this video. That being said, I stand by my point that me creating videos on consumable products does not make me responsible for someone else's decisions to purchase or not purchase something. I get that "don't watch" doesn't cover the complexity of addiction and that's totally my bad for being so cross, but I do want to clarify that I did not say "just don't overspend" or "don't make poor purchasing decisions". Those are not my beliefs when it comes to addiction. I am not an avid MR viewer so I am not familiar with most of her other videos. Again thank you for your comment, I appreciate being held accountable for when I get things wrong and I appreciate you taking your time to do so, so that I can do better in the future. 💖
