I've noticed that in American culture, reality checks are actually viewed as "negativity". "Negativity" is shunned and shamed when it should be acknowledged when making important choices in life. There's this narrative of false positivity that ultimately leads to a harsh come down in the future. Although I don't think I'll be buying a franchise soon, I appreciate the insights in your videos.
One thing I noticed right away a long time ago is that these "trade publications" have no wall between their editorial and advertising departments. I'm sure Entrepreneur magazine is no different. They likely give great weight in their "secret ranking formula" to those companies which also purchase advertising in their magazine. In fact, one such magazine (in a different industry) actually sent me a solicitation to advertise with the promise of "positive and prominent mentions" within their editorial stories. In other words, everything in these so-called trade publications is really paid advertising from cover to cover.
You are absolutely correct. The 500 list was mentioned to me when I almost got involved in a franchise. I wanted to get a Tim Horton coffee shop but the don’t have any business in Florida yet. Lucky me, I listen to one of your videos about TH and it was not great. Love to hear about Urth Cafe‘ in California. They are fantastic but the web site says that the franchise but the owner said no when I emailed him. Thank you so much for your videos
It looks like Urth may have sold licenses at one time but the page is now broken. They did sell a license to Saudi Arabia. My concern with them is whether that upscale, trendy model could be replicated outside these very unique CA markets. Also - keep in mind it took them 10 years to finally become profitable!
I developed a theorem years ago when I was a student member on a finance committee that was charged with allocating a few million dollars every year at my university: "Emotions and Finance don't mix" Emotions (essentially hormone and chemical imbalances) cause people to do stupid shit. From poor business decisions, to poor marital/divorce decisions, to general purchases, poor investments, spending foolish and lavishly when coming into large sums of money (e.g., lottery, inheritances)...etc.
In certain ways it can with more restrictive policies, increased fees, reduced territory availability. But there are also benefits such as increased brand awareness and established operational policies. Each situation is different. Thanks for the comment!

Franchiae city I love the introduction of the video.. And it's totally true.. Maybe you think franchise could make millionaire.. I was thinking to inveat in a franchise in my country Mexico, named as "agua inmaculada" the entertainment paints everything very nice, where you can work few hours, I investigate about it and I found they was closing many of those because not technical support, and kind of bad product so I desire to avoid cheap franchises. This guy and channel is a new mentor for me.. And now I can analyze before throw out my money in something good or bad. Thanks
Thank you so much. I highly appreciate every single word you wrote to me. Hope you more progress in your good destinations to help people who are in a great need to good people like you to lighten their ways in a totally dark world.
Grateful for the efforts and sharing valuable information. I have always wanted to own a branded franchisee, but after your wonderful eye opening presentation, will be objective and cautious. Thank you immensely
Franchise culture is pretty similar to other cults in fact. The Love Bombing = Emotional Momentum are one and the same tactic/technique to get you entangled and give them your hard earned money.
The concept of franchising is based on two opposing theories. 1 ) Entrepreneurship 2. ) Big Corporation. Aka the Franchisor. Franchising is full of contradictions from any free market business perspective since you are really working for the Corp and not yourself as you would be having started your own business.
Owning a business is 2 full time jobs. The work and running it. One of my old bosses used to say once the door is unlocked and the lights go on it costs $5000.
I learned that the hard way with a trucking company running loads is easy. State &federal regs, insurance, maintenance, logging, actually getting paid. Those are the hard part
@@Markyellowcake for you Californians. Didn't the EPA crack down on them? Basically say you follow our standards or you're putting California out of business
Famous franchising is basically the strategy of "how do I expand my business by opening more locations for FREE and have hard working people work there several years, for minimal amount of money and guaranteed income for me".
depends what you mean by "better". The McDonald brothers DEFINITELY thought running the business was better than selling the franchises. Ray Kroc thought otherwise. Both were right in their own way but Ray made more money.
It costs far more to open all the stores without franchising. Your statement makes the assumption that during the time of expanding locations the parent company had endless funds/ credit and/or was willing to take a much larger risk of said capital/ credit. A later buyback of successful franchises would cost even more as well.
Blue Jedi: They have been around since religion was founded. Tithing comes to mind. Any religion that has a convention, be it in Rome or Mecca or even Vegas is a franchise.
church's chicken....YUM. Sorry, we don't have a church's chicken out here in the middle of nowheresville, so when you say church I think of something totally different..
people forget the work part of the franchise. if your franchise is serving crap you can go broke real easy. mcdonalds is so easy. if you have the right market and your stores sales are dropping, congrats you've hired awful employees. mcdonalds does seem to allow. my favorite mcdonalds still has cars around the building like its 1980 russia. the food still tastes good when done right!! they are always busy day, night. the location doesn't even seem that great. they pay their workers good wages. hire the best, fire the rest!.
I agree, do not go by the Franchise 500. They had Subway on top for years but after looking at Subway in great detail I decided to stay away from them. Now I'm glad I did.
"Sunshine coming through the windows," and, "Happy customers," eh? Put in, "customers vs employees," or, "customer freakout," in youtube's search function and see how many of the incidents (that aren't in walmart) are in these franchised places...
Robert. I've heard you say here and there that investing in print shops can be a smart idea. Can you give some more insights about that? How about a company like Alphagraphics? They seem solid.
Thanks for the question! In some markets, and for some owners printing can do well. Owner needs to be sales savvy and able to manage accounts. If that is the case I would suggest also looking at specialty printing, or depending on the needs of the specific market other B2B models. It takes us on average 20-40 hours with a client to compare franchises and determine which is the best one. There is no "best" for every owner and every location. If you would like assistance here is how our service works. www.franchise.city/our-services
Hi Robert It is a great and very valuable video because it opens our eyes on the black side of the franchise. I just have a question there, I am an English teacher, what about investing in e-learning franchise? As they announced the have millions of students who would like to learn English. So please if you have any advice I will be very grateful to hear. Kind regards
Thank you for visiting! e- learning can be a good industry, unfortunately there are several companies that offer opportunities with little value. Without a specific name I am unfortunately unable to offer much insight. Be cautious of any that claim inflated returns, and also be aware of any prohibitively expensive ongoing fees. A red flag already is "millions of students that want to learn English", denoting there is a huge lineup of cash in hand customers just waiting for you to open. The English teaching industry is in fact highly competitive, as it is possible for anyone to enter with only a skype account and a few ads on social networks, which drives the price down.
I bet that the Fortune 500 company has received financial support by McDonald's. Would you please do an franchise assessment on owing an INN-And-Out Burger franchise, I would love to learn more about the franchise opportunity with this company.
I was thinking about buying a Subway. But I got to thinking, I can buy bread and deli meats and make my own fucking sandwiches. I did it. Coke came in and told me to sell their shit, then Pepsi told me the same. I sell Iced tea instead. I am making bank. It's amazing how many hungry people I can feed in a day. They tell me they don't care what my shop is called. I call it The Sandwich Shop. They know just what I sell. Whooda thunk it? If I ever buy a franchise it will be a Bank Of America.
Almost bought a Home Helpers franchise two years ago. I paid the $5000 deposit, and all the info they promised once I paid the deposit was still very vague to say the least. I saw that as a red flag, and canceled my application. Have you got any experience with them? I have since started my own company and looking to become franchisor myself now.
Not a bad brand. The question is though are there better? And what is "better" based on your specific goals, skills and most importantly market demographics. Next time call Franchise City so you don't have to guess!
Buy a franchise and sit back and become a millionaire. That is just delusional thinking. All businesses require owner participation and sharp realistic thinking as well as carefully hiring the right people. If you cannot do this then get a degree or certificate and a job.
Only thing that matters is LOCATION. Not what franchise to choose, tacos or burgers, pizzas or hot-dogs etc... that's the narrative that's being pushed by franchise companies because basically they're looking for suckers...Don't invest in franchise it's not for everyone, open your nice little shop in a great location or do nothing

I looked through your videos and I didn't find anything about storage unit franchises, or independent. It looks like most of the investment is in the real estate footprint.
It can be. We work with a couple of franchises in that space will probably be covering it in the future. Its a decent business, easy to run, low overhead, but location is everything. For some reason they seem to be a magnet for homeless and drug dealers in certain areas. For someone with the capital, seeking a relatively passive gig with longer term returns it can be a good choice. Thanks for the comment!

I have no intention of starting a franchise and I'm still binge watching. High quality videos packed with well-researched data!
Your presentation on social validation and emotional momentum was very well done. It actually applies to much more than just franchises. Great job.
