  • Hi Everyone, it's Annabel, welcome back to my channel!
    *Quick apology- I tried a new mic out, bad result, will switch back to old mic :-)
    In this video I will be taking one the last Vandas out of it's basket setup and repotting it into a semi-hydroponic setup with a combination of LECA, pumice and growstones- nearly all my Vandas are in semi hydro now. This will give us a nice way to track the conversion process also, since many of my other vandas are in self-watering pots where you cannot view root growth as easily. I'll update while converting my vandas to semi hydro, so we can track how they do!
    Vandas are very thirsty, and there are a few dried root tips on this vanda that indicate I was possibly letting it dry out too much in it's basket with media setup. Hopefully it will enjoy it's new setup.

    Good video. I believe with you about the Vanda being able to grow. Giving me the idea that I would be able to grow a Vanda now and not have to worry about a lot of roots hanging.

      My other vandas went into semi hydro about 2 months ago and the initial results have been really good 😄 Basketing with bark/ moss mixes works well also, in a pot that would need lots of ventilation though, so maybe some extra holes in the sides which is what I used to do with them. They will still grow very long aerial roots though, even potted, at awkward angles that refuse to be trained. But in semi hydro they won't need moving from their shelf so that's just fine 😄.

    I converted my vandals to a similar system ,except only 3/4th length of roots actually in leicka. All doing very well.

      Hallo Jana, how long have your Vanda bin in that setup? I am interested on how they will do term, still a little cautious with Vanda when it comes to potting them 😅

      Daniel Taendler I have had three in the Leila for about three months. They are doing well and have here roots in the leika and are getting new leaves. I just got a new choc Vanda and am going to do thesame

      @@janadarnold2500 That's great! The ones I put in just over 2 months ago have grown loads of roots also, seems we are getting similar results 😀 🤞 I've been growing Vandas potted or in baskets in media for quite a while though, so my theory is the long term results will be similar if not better with inorganic 🤞Keep us updated!

    Maybe its a myth but most videos and sites I’ve read highly discourage repotting orchids during blooming season. Best to do during vegetation stages and it works for me.

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад

      Hi! Think critically about the reasons 🙂 Blooming- more energy diverted into flowers, less into new root growth. But established plants often grow both vegatively, new roots, and bloom at the same time.
      The reason for the importance of new root growth? Repotting disturbs the air to moisture balance that the old roots adapted to, and the root microbiome, the rhizosphere, which can mean old roots become damaged and die and the plant relies on those new roots. This doesn't happen for all orchids or people, and I very rarely get root death following a repot, so the timing is less important for me.
      I always do what works best for me in my environment, and encourage you to do what works best for you in yours 🙂
      I don't know why this video took off or became my most viewed video, but I have made every effort to direct people to newer videos with the links in the description and pinned comments, as well as adding in-video links to updates, and those three things are all that I can do- so please see those for more up to date videos 🙂
      I often emphasise that people should wait for new root growth before repotting any plant, as it increases success rate for those who aren't sure how the old roots will respond to the medium change. It's a beginner friendly rule- but once you understand the reasoning, like any rule, it is flexible. There are no hard rules with growing plants, as I'm sure you know 🙂

    I am following your Vanda experiment with great interest.
    I have just started a similar experiment after my Vanda started struggling when I moved into a place that has much drier air than my old place, I cannot keep up misting the roots frequently enough and it has become a hassle.
    What I am doing is that I just bury the root ends and fill in 1/3 to half of the container with leca and pumice, so the stem stays out of the medium. Don’t you think having the stem inside of the medium is a little risky? Keep us updated and thanks for sharing!

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад +3

      Hi! 😀 The stem here isn't really buried. But for many of my vandas I do, as the top layer stays relatively dry, which is why I add the top layer of non wicking pebbles to stop roots dessicating. I've always buried stems and pseudobulbs slightly in semi hydroponic setups anyway, so that new roots start off a bit lower into the media where it isn't quite so dry, but now I tend to use the non wicking pebbles to do this. Never had any rot issues. Good luck with your Vandas 😄

    Hi Annabel! First all let me congratulate you on your excellent work with our beloved orchids. I have to say that I have already giving up growing Vandas for a few years, but last week I couldn’t resist a yellow spotted Vanda that was with an excellent price and I bought it! This video was exactly what I was waiting for 🙏🙏 I will do exactly like you did. I just don’t know how you did the hole on the glass? Thank you very much. 😘😘

      Hi! Thanks! 😀 Im glad you found a Vanda to tempt you to try again!
      Its a slightly experimental way of growing Vandas, but initial results have been good so far! If you're going for this sort of potting method one thing I'd say is to put them on a heat mat if you're in a cooler climate (unsure if you are, just thought I'd say 😄 ) it really helps with speeding up root growth 😀 The hole in the glass is a bit of a pain to be honest. I follow Michael's method which I'll link here:
      ruclips.net/video/h3PKt-UJjpE/видео.html
      I bought a set of glass drill bits from a local hardware chain. I start off with the smallest of the glass drill its and a pot of water next to me while I work, and a towel to hold the vase firm in on the floor. I wet the drill bit and make an initial drill mark, then keep dunking the drill bit back in water while I'm working on making the hole deeper. It takes some patience and even pressure. Then once that one's done I move up through the drill bit sizes to enlarge the hole. It's not the easiest, I'd practice on some jam jars first not your nicest vase. But once you've got it down it's simple, just a bit of effort 😄 Every now and then the drill bits do need replacing though as I found d my last set were starting to crack vases where they were getting blunt. Very annoying! Hope that helps 😀

    Nicely re-potted, enjoyed your video! Looking forward to see your updates on it. Thanks for sharing. I have a question: I have a Rhyncostylis which use to be bare rooted in a glass vase. I would like to convert it to semi hydro or self watering set up. It's not growing now , so what do you suggest? shall I do it now or wait for the root growth to start in spring?

    Me too following . Plz keep us posted . I have few vas’s like yours and they are different size . Last year I left full water culture . I has full water culture vanda , Catt, Dendrobium but once I started growing roof top than I have a brake of water culture .
    I am thinking of semi hydro . I am inspired from your video . Did you make that hole by yourself ? You do a lots of
    D I Y . ;) I like creative works . Also I do all of my orchid related works by myself . I enjoy doing those hard works. That’s keep me fit .... I am now 60+ .

      Hi Hamim,
      Yes I drill the holes in the vases myself, using a set of glass drill bits, it's quite easy once you get the hang of it. There are lots of RUclips tutorials and articles on it, so I'd suggest going there as a starting point 🙂 I follow Michael's method.

    Hi Annabel,
    I have just caught up with this video as I have bought my first Vanda and I want to try and grow it in leca.
    I was interested to see that you drilled only one hole in the glass vase.
    Is there a reason for one hole vs the two holes which are normal for phalaenopsis (I think)?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  3 года назад

      I've done a few vanda updates in a playlist, and you can see these flowering in some of the bloom videos 🙂 I will updating soon again, but you may want to watch this in the mean time before trying: ruclips.net/video/iCVU7OXjI8Q/видео.html , skip to around 11:40 . There were holes in both vases, one hole or two makes little difference, thick glass is hard to drill.

    Hiya, do you recommend the screw fix lights that you use. I’ve just fitted some to my window shelves to supplement the natural light which is often poor especially in winter. Do you have any suggestions seeming as you’ve used them? Can you put orchids to close? Do they generally do a good job?

    • @TheOrchidRoom
      @TheOrchidRoom  4 года назад +1

      Hi Abi,
      Yes my oncidiums and Miltoniopsis are under these and all grow and flower very well 🙂 No, I don't think you can put orchids too close since they generate very little heat, I've even got several flower spikes growing up against them and the buds opened just fine, even touching them. They're fine for lower light orchids like Oncidiums and Phals, especially since you're using them to supplement natural light, whereas I use them as a sole light source. With the combination of the natural light and them, you could probably even grow Cattleyas. I have several neofinetia and rhynchostylis hybrids flowering under them, but at a much closer distance than the oncidiums are.
