Space bar at fresh water to fill watering can. If you plant and water the seeds the Mayor gave you, you will have the ingredients for the cabbage stew, but they probably won't grow in time. There are no repercussions to failing a quest or not taking one. You should pick up everything on the ground that has a dark black outline, like the plants you see around. Some you can cook with, some you can sell, but stuff on the ground is better than 90% of what you can shake out of a bush. I don't bother to shake bushes, too much else to do. I have nearly 200 days in this game so far, with all the updated houses/buildings, etc. This game is a blast. I hope you have fun!
Also, if you read the entire quest, it will tell you where to get the items. For example, the quest to buy a book for Sarah Edward's daughter, it tells you that the teacher, James Hutton, sells the books. Every quest will either tell you outright how to fulfill the quest, or it will give major hints, or it will be obvious. My advice is to read each quest in full.
