    The tennis serve is one of the most complex strokes in all sports and it can, therefore, be quite challenging to make technical changes. However, when it comes to the platform and pinpoint stance this is something that can quite easily be adapted. I, therefore, encourage all players to experiment with different stances. Players will quickly find out which stance suits their serve the most. In this video, I discuss platform vs pinpoint advantages and disadvantages and present variations to both. I also discuss which stance is the most utilized by the best servers in the game.

      Hello Nick, I have changed to pinpint serve to get max power. But in a pinpoint serve, instead of moving the back leg to front, I am naturally able to move the front leg to the back leg, jump and able to serve with much power than normal pinpoint serve. Is that a good technique?

    I've been wondering about my footwork on my serve. Now I'm seeing that there isn't necessarily a "right' way. Rather, I should match my footwork with my swing as described in this video. Well done, Nick! I think for me the key will be getting something 100% repeatable and with good rhythm as my serve is generally fast, but inconsistent.

    Great tutorial Nick. I wish this video had come two years earlier, would have solved most of my stance,serve related confusions. Mine is corkscrew stance, previously tried platform,but ended with back pain issues standing very parallel to baseline . Thanks from Bangalore, India.

    Thank you for a valuable lesson! I can’t wait to try different platform stances when I can (it is more of a matter of weather than the lockdown).
    I especially like how you outline the relationship between the length of the coil and the type of platform stance used. Now I know what I need to change (which will only take another 10 years).

    It is funny how platform vs. pinpoint are the main variants when we describe someone's serve, but the fundamentals between them seem the same, and not that difficult to change compared to other aspects of the serve.

    This is awesome, I have seen coaches trying to tell how to serve and tell you up front what will be your stance. Does not work like that. Everyone has different physiology. I tried just about every one of this stances. The one more consistent is "lateral" used by Federer and the most powerful is the "corkscrew". But that is just me, you have to find yours. Thanks intuitive tennis.

    Nik, I'm just learning tennis and thus have not settled on a stance. However, I have discovered that practicing the pinpoint motion (without even hitting a ball) has helped remove my confusion about how I should load the body/distribute weight. Your channel is a blessing!

    This is another great example of your "intuitive" approach being so much more useful than conventional instruction that presumes one-size-fits-all -- you make it very clear that there are many correct stances, but for each player, some stances will feel better than others.
    One aspect of stance that you don't discuss but which I wonder about, however, is the angle we should align our body relative to our target for the ad court vs the deuce court. The various stances that you discuss show a wide range of angles for initial chest alignment relative to the center of the ad court -- from the Becker stance pointing pretty much at the target (~0-degrees) to the McEnroe stance where you are facing the side fence (~80-degrees right of target). For the deuce court, should I try to maintain those same angles relative to the target? For example, with the McEnroe stance, to aim 80-degrees right of the center of the deuce court, my chest would initially point about 20-degrees left of the baseline. Is that the correct way to think about deuce court alignment?
    Thanks for your great videos. I think that your "intuitive" approach is a pretty revolutionary step up from the conventional instruction that everyone else is teaching.

    All your videos are great, but your serve videos are specially helpful. My problem: I slide my feet together during serve, but I've been trying to change to platform (like Raonic) cuz less moving parts seem better consistency wise. The thing is when I shadow stroke in my living room I can do it easily since pin point makes me lose balance, but when I try to do it in a court with a tennis ball I feel insecure to not slide my back foot.. I guess I'm stuck at the moment.

      You gotta do it on court Jon, lot of reps and if platform doesn’t work nothing wrong with pinpoint.

    Great video! Excellent tip on not loading the back foot on the pinpoint. IMO, pinpoint is best for flat serve because of higher strike point, platform best for slice serve because whole body rotates. Note, Lendl also used the corkscrew method.

    Super vid Nikola.. I have a question on the serve.. More than the stance, I see slow MO videos of all gr8 servers and they all seem to bend laterally from the hips after the jump into the court. This seems to naturally trigger shoulder over shoulder and drag the racket up after lag. Is this the key? To fire ur oblique muscles on the side of the stomach?

    hello...great video. I have always been intrigued by Andy Roddick's serve. He held the fastest serve of 155 mph for some time and was really consistent at hitting fast serves near this speed. He used an extreme abbreviated take back with a narrow platform stance and use both legs like a spring to bounce out of the ground to add the power..really driving it. I have been experimenting with this narrow stance and it does help me with a better leg drive and I can use both legs. the only thing is that my take back is no where near as extreme abbreviated as Roddick's. I think it is more a semi abbreviated. Would this narrow stance work ok with a semi abbreviated take back?

    I been going back and forth, im still undecided, i tough with platform my second serves were more spinny and consistent, but now i think that when im tired or in second sets, with platform i dont transfer the weight as easily, so actually pin point might be more consistent for me on the long term, besides, i seem to use my legs better with pin point, because even if im right handed, im left leg dominant, so it feels natural to charge everything in my left leg and i feel like i jump more effortless, but then again i feel coiling a little more difficult when i use pin point, im all messed up and i got a tournament match i want to win next sunday, and i wont be able to hit the court to practice before it, so i guess ill play this tournament with my actual platform stance, putting emphasis in body transfer during the whole match and not only on first serves, and then ill practice a bit and experiment...

    Great video, with pin point, what is the timing in relation to the serve motion, should feet be together by time you reach trophy position? With the lag of hitting arm in relation to tossing arm I find it hard to coordinate

    I'm low intermediate level and trying to practice my serve. I was focusing on what my feet are doing as I was trying to develop consistency. I use a platform stace but my front foot (right) doesn't leave the ground/ I don't jump up when making contact with the ball. I'm not sure what my back foot should do when hitting the ball. If I should step through after contact or if it should remain on the ground. I was watching a beginer lesson and the back foot was on the ball of foot at contact. Then stepped forward after contact. I was trying to do that but when I focus on trying to do something with my feet I start to do faults. 😂.

    I’ve done some experimenting with this, and I’ve personally found that platform works better for me in general. However, I’ve also found that IF I time it correctly, the pin point gives me more power, but that only happens for me 1 in 20 serves, so not really worth it.

    One advantage of the corkscrew that you don’t mention is that you can actually use the rotation of the feet to initiate the uncoiling. I personally don’t use this stance because the timing doesn’t work for me, but many of my college teammates did, and they were all able to get a lot of pace and spin on their serves

    I’m experimenting with pin point stance but I find it’s harder to do a kick serve. So I’ll use a regular platform stance on the second serve and try to kick it (not that it kicks much anyways) . Is this wrong strategy to use two stances or should I just stick with one style?

    I am having some stress on my knee from platform serving. Do you think there would be less stress using a pinpoint serve instead? Thinking jumping off of both feet would be better than just the left.

    I've been using corkscrew stance since I started playing early 80's. But now when I finally filmed myself I see I doing footfault constantly. Back leg go too far and too early. Want to learn that Zverer style where back leg comes to touch front leg. But it will be difficult task cause muscle memory from decades 😑

    In the pin-point, many players rock the lead foot (the left foot for righties) on the heel before the toss with the toe in the air. Apparently, this helps with weight transfer but is optional. Mechanically, is there a difference or impact to timing with this extra step?

    I have some knee "twisting" pain on the right knee on the inside of the knee (serve right handed) when serving sometimes. I think it might have to do with the serve stance. Sometimes my right foot is aligned slightly more clockwise than parallel to the baseline (similar to how you show the lateral platform stance). I think the pain is reduced when doing conventional platform or pinpoint. Have you ever heard of a student with twisting knee pain on the right knee while serving right handed. If so, is it because of the stance?
    Trying to figure this out because my son is getting a similar knee pain too lol.

      Haven’t had anyone with this pain. Check with your doctor. I have torn meniscus in both knees, never have pain on serve

    I'm 6 foot 6 and I've noticed other professional men at my height (Zverev, Medvedev, Khachanov, Isner, etc) use the pinpoint stance. However, I'm drawn more to the platform stance myself.
    Is it better for taller people to use a pinpoint stance perhaps?

      I don’t see any correlation there. I’m 6’5 and use platform. It turns out the pin point stance is the most common stance at the high level regardless of height. There have been some tall guys who used platform like Krajicek.

    i’ve never seen a WTA player use a platform stance. why do you think this is so? or am i missing some players?

      There are some like Keys and Vanderweghe (switched from pin point) but it’s very rare on WTA

    On the platform stance you load the right leg, and it generates alot of power because the right leg connects to the right hip and then right arm.
    However on pinpoint stance you load your left leg. Im confused because it doesn’t connect with your right arm?

      Nick did NOT copy anyone. He has his own teaching style that is VERY effective. They may overlap on key fundamentals, but they are VERY different. I watch both channels and I totally disagree with your opinion.
