I’m a candle maker and 3 things you will want to do is 1 use a thermometer every time to not scorch the wax or over heat your oil. 2 you need to measure the oil based off how much wax you use, it’s a ratio so that you add enough to be able to smell once it’s burning which is called a “scent throw”. 3 the oil is to be added once the wax cools a little or it will evaporate some of the oil. I was just telling my sister I was going to make you some Lavender Chamomile candles then I saw you were trying your hand at it! If you have any questions let me know. I’ve been making them for 5 years now. 😊❤

@@heatherpfeil2939 for soy wax I heat to 175 (using candy thermometer), pour off the size candle you want in oz measuring with a scale in a different spouted bowl to cool down to 140 for glass since glass is naturally cooler, 150 for metal. Pour in 10% oil (check if diff for essential oils), stir for 1 min. Pour into your pre-wicked container, and let cool completely. Don’t burn the candle for at least 24hrs but 72hrs is best. Air bubbles, and sinkholes are from the wax changing temp to fast. Can happen if the area you are in is cool, you pour high temp wax in a cold container, or there is an a/c vent near etc.

    Big tip for postpartum!!!
We had so many people excited for us and all offing to help. One of the best things one of our family members did was set up a meal train for us. It was so helpful that for the first few weeks we had people droping of food or having our favorite takeout delivered to us. She had us make a list of our favorites to give people ideas and she gave very specific instructions including “send a text to let the family know that there goodies are on the doorstep but DO NOT ask to come in or see the baby. Let them all sleep. You can see the baby in a few weeks” 😂
It was amazing! Didn’t need to start using my freezer meals until week 3.

I'm glad it helped you but my church will organise people to cook meals and it's just a reality that some people prepare food differently to others and are better cooks than others. Yes it is helpful to have a meal prepated for you postpartum but not if I don't enjoy it and have to feel guilty throwing it out. Ive had 5 children with minimal Freezer prep, 3 C sections and a husband who couldn't take time off or help out much. I just sucked it up and did things including cooking, bathing my 16 month old etc.

My name is Jo-Anne Miner (I go by Jojo.) I thought I would tell you a bit about myself. I will be 65 next month. I'm in a wheelchair and have a lot of health issues. I live in an apartment and have the assistance of PSWs to help me to live my life to the fullest. I love the ideals behind having a Homestead. It's the life I wish I could have had. It's why I love watching channels such as this.
Becky, I have learned so much from you and I know that in the days and weeks ahead that I will learn much more. I love watching you stumble and laugh at yourself as you spill things. Sometimes you get me laughing out loud. What a joy you are my dear. Please, don't change. Be exactly who you are. I feel the joy your personality brings to this homesteading/cooking/preserving kind of show. I am so grateful for you and even your family. Josh seems really sweet, and your mom is wonderful too.
I thought I would share what I'm doing to preserve up food. I began in the spring to can up some homemade soups. I finally got myself a pressure canner and just love being able to can so much more than I ever have b4. I began buying things from the grocery store (I am unable to access fresh farm food,) however I do the best I can. I have canned potatoes and carrots, pickled beats, pickles, cowboy candy, salsa, tomato sauce, corn, beans and so much more. My friend and I bought beef roasts on sale and we canned that. It's so delicious. We have also canned turkey. I baked an extra turkey at our Thanksgiving and baked it. Then I took all the meat off the bones and canned that with a little chicken broth. It turned out so yummy and goes so well with the cranberry sauce I also canned. Now I can have Thanksgiving dinner whenever I want. We also bought chicken breasts on sale and canned that raw. I had no idea it would turn out so good. I have also canned chili and beef stew. Then of course there is the jams... and the pie filling... Blueberry, cherry, apple and peach. All so good. In all, we figured that I have about 800 jars or more. Keep in mind I live in a 1 bedroom apartment. I have to be very strategic about where I put my jars. My best friend Carole; my canning buddy, even made a shelf for me in my room where I have some of it displayed. The rest I have in my closet. It is a work in progress as I come up with new ideas for canning this or that. At first Carole thought I was crazy, now she's my partner in crime. lol....
I am so grateful for your channel and others like yours that encourage this lifestyle. I like to be prepared for anything. I know that I can also share with my friends and family should the need arise. You have encouraged me to do what I do, so thank you. I really appreciate it. I love it that me watching your channel benefits you and your family by providing you with an income which again encourages you. What an amazing system! This allows you to take your food preservation to the next level. This is amazing. I love RUclips! Jojo from Mississauga Canada

Hey Becky! I've owned a candle company (Simply Curated) for 10 years now. When I first started making candles I did it just like this. A few things that have been mentioned but I wanted to re-iterate, temperature is super important with soy wax and it carries depending on the kind of soy wax you're using. You can use a candy thermometer or an infrared thermometer to get the temperature of your wax while melting. The second tip would be for your fragrance blends that you made. I would figure our your ratio and blend the oils together in a measuring cup, then you want to add that to your wax as a percentage of weight. You can do this easily by using a scale that you'd use for baking or cooking. Put the jar on the scale, zero it out, add your wax, then take that measurement in OZ and use a calculator to figure between 6-8%, then that is the total oz of fragrance to add to that jar. (you can do the same thing with the whole pitcher, but then you need to have measured how much wax is in the pitcher first.) Lastly would be with your wooden wicks, you want to test to make sure you have the right size wick for the diameter of your jar and that it will melt it all the way across, but also not be oversized which could cause the candle to get too hot and the glass to break.

Hi Becky, I love how you say your “own personal grocery store”. You are just an absolute delight to watch! I also wanted to share something with you from a previous video I saw where you were so sweet to share your anxieties regarding childbirth. I was in my 40s when my son was born, and when I went to the birthing classes all the young mothers were talking about having a natural childbirth. When the teacher got to me, I said, “oh no… I want lots of medication!”Lol! I was VERY nervous. To make a long story short… My sweet son Benjamin came a lot faster than any of us anticipated and I was not able to get an epidural. All things considered my unplanned “natural“ childbirth actually wasn’t really all that bad. So I think if you are blessed to be able to get some medication, it should be smooth sailing. Since I hadn’t planned on natural childbirth… I will tell you something funny… My husband was trying to be a coach basically based on things we saw on television, and he was saying breathe, breathe! I remember looking at him and saying rather loudly…”My nose is stuffed!!!” LOL!! God bless you… I pray for you every night for a healthy pregnancy and an easy delivery. Love and God bless, Mary.❤🤗❤️

Candle maker here! Lol just FYI, the supplies, like wax and fragrance oils, are probably a bit cheaper at candle supply shops. I use Amazon for the wick stickers, but everything else is through a supplier, as I buy wax by the 50 pound cases. Be careful with the type of wicks you choose as well, as it’s a process trying to “find your wick”, and depends on the wax you’re using, and the size vessel. I’m not too familiar with wooden wicks though. Also, you can use a hot glue gun to stick the wick at the bottom. I’ve also never used essential oils, as I’ve heard it can be tricky. I typically throw my wax in presto pots, and heat it up until it reaches about 190, but I don’t add my fragrance oil until it goes down to 180. I then stir slowly for 2 minutes, and then pour very slowly into the jars. Pouring temp is about 160 after that stirring. If you’re getting sink holes, it could be the wax, and or pouring temperature. All waxes behave differently, but you can top off the tops with a heat gun. Also, since you’re using all soy, you’ll want to make sure these candles cure for a couple weeks before lighting them. Also, it’s important to follow the recommended percentage for fragrance oils..for candles, I typically use 10% fragrance load, but increase that for wax melts. Not sure about essential oils. But, I hope this helps a little!

Becky, thanks for another wonderful video with so much inspiration. Oddly, I was just thinking about making candles myself but was kind of shocked at how expensive the supplies are. I want to use my grandmother's odd tea cups (meaning only one of each design).
A gentle hint about kitchen safety with canned goods. It's always important to smell an item before adding it to a dish, but it's ten times more important when it's home-canned and a hundred-fold when it's canned meat. Things do go wrong, and smelling that something is off can be a lifesaver. One of the things that prompted my mom to quit smoking (in the 60s) was that she'd made a pie with canned berries. Because she was a smoker, she couldn't smell that they'd gone bad; my dad happened to come in just as she was serving it, and saved the day. Our noses are actually a key "tool" in the kitchen. I notice you add canned items without pausing to smell them first. I want you and others to be safe. Thanks for listening and keep thriving and inspiring all of us!

Hi Becky-some tips for you on candle making. First, you need more pitchers so you can incorporate scent into the wax versus the jar. Secondly, depending on the wax type, you have a maximum fragrance or essential oil amount (iRFA) you can add. Adding more can cause oils pooling, and worse yet a “spitting” of oil as the wax burns which can be dangerous. Finally, you should not add essential or fragrance oil until your wax cools to 120-160 degrees (I add at 140), or it degrades the oil. The amount you added was so high because you “degraded” your oil by adding it to wax that was too hot. That’s why you couldn’t smell it! Not meaning to be critical at all-I hope this helps!

Same here in southern WV! We grow a huge garden, the majority of it corn (500 ears or so, staggered planting so they don't all come in at the same time). We freeze it on the ears (4 in a bag since it's just me and hubby) and bags off the cob too. It's a LOT of work, but it's enjoyed until the next garden season. One of our neighbors got Covid and said she only wanted our corn. We gave her several bags and she said it helped her survive until she got her appetite back.

When I was in 1st grade (1962!) we made Christmas candles in school. We poured wax into large waxy paper milk cartons cut down to around 4" tall. We took more melted wax and whipped it with an egg beater 😊. It was white and frothy, we added glitter!
When the candles hardened, we pealed the carton away and applied the whipped wax all over the candle, looking like fluffy snow. Such a clear happy memory you brought back to me!

I let myself inspire the other day and bought a large block of cheese, grated it in my food processor, added some corn starch (so they won’t stick so badly, but next time I’ll add more!) and vacuum packed them in my new one hand operated vacuum packer (LOOOOVE that, can hold the bag in position with one hand and close and start with the other, no buttons on each side, only one handle in the middle front)! I added exactly as much as I need for a small airfryer pizza to each bag, soooo practical! So thanks for the inspiration! 🤗

Miss Becky, you look great! I'm so excited for y'all and the coming baby. It seems like you've had a pretty easy pregnancy, hope that is reality, and I'm sending prayers and positive energy your way as you get closer to delivery. I'm sure that everything is going to be perfectly fine, but I'm still sending hopes, prayers, and good energy. God is good!
Also, watching, I have a weird feeling that you might go early. Just be ready!

Edit: you've been showing a bit of "baby brain" in your last few uploads. Totally normal to have bouts of forgetfulness and clumsiness, your body is making more adjustments to accommodate the new blessing. You are going to be an incredible mother, and you have a wonderful husband who I know will be an excellent father.

I am so glad you left all your mess ups in this video… there are so many times I am like this and it’s calming actually to see hey we all drop things or make messes and there is no shame in not being perfect ♥️ makes me feel even more like we are friends because friends don’t care how messy you get lol all you and I need is a glass of wine 🍷 haha

Clutsy is what I call it. I’m laughing but know that feeling well. It’s nice you share that when you’re having accidents this day. It makes me not feel so bad when I’m trying to copy videos because I am clutsy everyday! Not just this day. I love your videos. Now I want chickens and a garden. Just can’t do the work. I live in Amish country though and can buy fresh a lot. I’m going to stock up and if nothing else freeze until I can learn canning or afford a freeze dryer or canning supplies. You truly are an inspiration. Every time I watch a video I end up in the kitchen.

I made candles a long time ago. You can easily add color to your candles by adding some crayon chips or shavings to the melted wax. It's way less expensive than the color blocks sold separately.
You can use cans from canned goods to melt different colored waxes too (bigger cans are best, bend a pour spout into the edge with pliers). Handle hot cans with offset pliers.

I found that crayons clogged the wicks. Maybe depends on the brand of crayons.

@@TheScintillady 🤷‍♀️ Maybe. I never had that problem with Crayola. And it's a good use for broken crayons.

I use crayons for coloring also, for those not familiar make sure they are wax crayons.

The dirt in wax usually sinks to the bottom.
Edit: sink holes are usually caused when you pour the wax too hot.
Also soy wax is prone to having really bumpy texture after the 1st few burn, dont worry it doesnt make the candle bad.
You can use clean nail clippers to cut the wicks
