itstytanic yeah! ive missed the bad retro games
Retro retro gaming retro grumps
Jon and Arin did play this.
John Reid i can't find that
John Reid no they didn’t, you must be thinking of either Drakkhen or Astyanax
"I think I will call a tournament!"
*"YOU CANNOT AFFORD IT."*
"Battles Rage Across the Land!"
Oh no I'm getting pulled over for drunk driving I suppose the only way to settle this is to CALL A TOURNAMENT!
YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT...
FUCK YOU WILFRED !!! 😂😂
Can you imagine this epic battle in medieval times and the king across the way is like FUCK YOU PHILLIP YOU AND YOUR...YOUR...BIG NOSE!
you called a tournament, and then
you lost to reginald front of beef
I foresee an animation. This one off was fucking hilarious.
Fragile was a good album
Zoombo and a most powerful Stand...
If there isn't one then battles will rage across the land.
i think this episode is so underrated, i still quote it all the time to this day lol i lose it at "your war is over" after less than 10 seconds of pew-pewing lmao
*I CALL A TOURNAMENT*
I'll be your Ivanhoe
Fuck that, I want me some Boeuf
I don't even wanna know
thanks for the offer but i dont need a hoe ivanhoe already XD
*I CALL A TOURNAMENT!*
YOU CANNOT AFFORD IT FOOL!
*TOURNAMENT AAAAARRRRRRRRCCCCC!!!*
It's a fucking TOURNAMENT ARC!!!!! Lol
I NEED AN ARMY!
Battles rage across the land...
This is quite possibly the greatest narration in gaming ever
Holy crap. They're playing the game I sent them!
Well done! I loved this game as a kid!
It was a favourite of mine too even though it was balls to the wall hard to figure out and play through.
i was the one that gave danny endless ocean 2 at magfest in 2015!
Endless Ocean 2 was a great playthrough! I'm glad you gave it to him.
It’s a refreshing change of pace to see a comment chain on a Grumps video that *doesn’t* make me regret looking at comments.
Gonna go ahead an place an order for 100 episodes of this.
Stone Cold Clem SAME Dude 😂😂😂
Yes we need at least 100 episodes of *I CALL A TOURNAMENT!*
If I am ever feeling down this episode will immediately put a smile on my face.
Boy...the wait for Game of Thrones last season is really taking its toll. XD
Matthew Shezmen actually GoT has been on its last season they kust needed time to finish the other half
Well, November has been going on forever...1100 days. Winter is still coming.
Is that overrated show finally ending?
We’ve waited so long, we’ve accepted anything that comes out!
Matthew Shezmen meh that show is boring af anyway
That was the most tragically ill fought campaign i've ever seen.
I loved every second of it.
Better luck next time, Gina.
That moment after 3:09 is probably the best timed raspberry I have ever heard.
Reginald Front de Boeuf; Great Great grandfather of Shia de Boeuf
Danny for the quality Men In Tights reference! 8:34
*HOW HAVE THEY NOT THEY PLAYED A GAME GRUMPS VS ON "SONIC AND MARIO AT THE OLYMPICS GAMES" YET?!*
my shit is *bolded.*
there was a grumpcade with brian and ross i think
Isn't the Wii U version kinda expensive
Well, clearly they had higher priorities. Like Defending the Crown!
Retro8bit that does not matter at all to them
What shall we do with these spam bots? I shall call a tournament!
Willie Miller you can't afford it
Tis just a flesh wound
This is now one of my favorite episodes of all time
Man, I fucking love it when Dan plays like this.
Id honestly like him to play halo ce.
(If he doesn't know the story ofc)
*inhales
*INFINIDAGGER!!!*
Can't get enough of the game grumps :)
I can't. laughing so hard on the subway 😂
I am legitimately curious to see how one would play this expertly. Not shitting on the Grumps, but this kind of game is so foreign to me and it seems to have unique rules and nuances. It comes across as one of those standalone games that only a few people would pick up and get really good at it
Well it IS just a butchered Amiga game so you might be expecting a little much.
Also, CURSE YOU american let's players everywhere who just won't touch C64 or Amiga!
I have played this game, though I played the Amiga version. I don't blame the Grumps for not knowing how to play it. You need the manual. Essentially you buy armies to occupy and invade territtories. Each terriotory gives you gold and soldier which you can use to increase your army. The objective is simply to occupy all territories. Raiding is one of two ways you can take a castle, the other being seiges. I forget what the tournament does, probably gives you gold if you win
More territory = more gold... more gold = more soldiers... more soldiers=more territory. Put soldiers into your army and take over land. Tournaments can be used as an alternate way to get territory or gold. Bigger army = easier to win fights. Certain fighting styles are better with different army composition. Robin Hood is a consumable that will make it easier for your army to win. You can use him three times. Taking a castle will eliminate that army from the game. It's basically an ancient version of Civ.
This game reminds of Lord's of the realm. Good times with that game
Here's how I used to do it - I would play was Wolfric, who was strong in tourney, weak in raiding and leadership. By choosing a weak jousting character Dan should have never called tourneys, he literally can't win. By using a weak swordplay character I would never go raiding except to rescue to the girl. Raiding was just too risky.
Always invade open territories, and use tournaments to win territories from other lords. This boosts income, I then buy tons of soldiers and thus, despite poor leadership, I crush my enemies in battle, see them driven before me, and hear the lamentation of their women. (Conan reference)
The objective is to avoid a fight until I have a massive numerical superiority. Tournaments instead are the cheaper safer way to acquire lands. Once I have those numbers, I can sweep across the land unopposed.
The Grumps also failed in how to build an army. They bought all soldiers. Soldiers are cannon fodder to absorb blows in combat, knights do the killing. Catapults can bombard, but mainly are for seiges where they can knock down walls, considerably reducing the garrison with disease projectiles and reducing their defense rate if the wall is knocked all the way down.
One should always retreat to preserve knights. They're too expensive to replace.
Because the archery shooting gallery you saw is SO HARD (especially when enemies are in the middle tier), you really need to soften the target ahead of time. The reason that archer attack is so hard is because the control scheme is flawed. The d-pad is good at moving you up to the top or down to the bottom, but it SUCKS at moving you to the middle tier. The number of guys they have and how fast you have to win are based on relative troop numbers. So you need to attack with numerical superiority.
Really, this isn't an action game. While there's a tad bit with the tourneys and raiding, it's mainly about resources.
Raiding is a great way to get money as long as your neighbors are rich, but IMHO it's a losing strategy. It's great when your enemies are strong because you can raid and walk away with HUGE moneys, but if they're that far ahead of you in terms of land and income...that Raiding boost generally won't overcome it. It's a great way to prolong a game you are losing...not so much a great way to win a game.
Oh my God! A GG animated of this will be amazing as hell! Can't wait til someone does it
I can not stop rewinding the jousting scene. I woke my Fiancee up laughing out loud. 🤣🤣🤣
This is aaaallll Dan.
I bet the people who developed this were picturing Civ V when they made it haha. Oh how far gaming has come XD
Looks more like Mount and Blade than Civ
As a historian, the plot hurts.
As a Lovely this is hilarious.
5/10 would be conflicted again.
Leisure Oh I know that and I'm glad it isn't. There's still that little bit of me that goes 'but.... no.....'
As a historian? Damn dude get over yourself lol
I'm going to settle all my disputes by screaming "I CALL A TOURNAMENT" and having everyone walk away from me because I'm weird and talk in Game Grumps references
*battles rage across the land*
"Join me, my leadership is average!" is the best thing I've heard in a long time.
Wolfric the Wild a.k.a. Dave Grohl.
i see you have good taste in profile pictures
There's just something hilarious about Dan sending one guy to take an entire castle.
I woke up crying, and I played this for background sound to try to get me out of that head space. It worked beautifully.
Thanks, Game Grumps. You never let me down.
“I’m tired of reading.”
Me as a kid with every game
Why are so many bad games fun to watch when they are played by these two?
-CDI Zelda trilogy
-Castlevania 2
-Trolls
-Teletubbies
-Denny's the menace
-Sonicboom rise of lyric
-Sonic forces
-Castlevania 64
-Mickey mousecapade(legendary)

Oh boy, I saw that thumbnail and got really excited. Another obtuse NES game for Arin to fume over. This game does absolutely fucking nothing to explain how to play it.
yeah, this was pre-hold your hand kind of gaming. You had to read the manual. Not until later did games just skip the manual and teach you how to play while playing.
When I got it, I didn't get the manual so it was insane to try and figure out. I still can't get close to beating it.
You think this is bad? Try Silent Service. If you don’t have the manual, you’re gonna have a fun time figuring out how to not get depth charged to kingdom come two minutes in.
I liked Silent Service too... I actually got good at that game to where I would run out of ammo killing enemy rather than being destroyed. So I had to come up with a plan to only kill high tonnage of ships and avoid using ammo on lesser ships and destroyers. The secret to that game was attacking at night at periscope depth.
Silent Service was sooo fucked. Man this takes me back to the good old days where you didn't have internet or tutorials and were basically fucked with several of these older games. I wanna see these guys try Metal Gear On The Nes, god damn was that a pain in the ass.
XD I'm choking at the most appropriate fart sound ever. LOL!!
"Front de boeuf" roughly translates to beef forehead. Edmund Beef Forehead.
Is it just me or does Danny have the perfect voice for narrating this XD
Pretty sure they started picking games from the trashcan rather than the shelf
Defender of the Crown was a pioneer in strategy gaming. You wouldn't have Civ without Defender.
That's some of the dumbest shit I've ever read. That's like saying you wouldn't have game x/y because electricity wasn't a thing yet. Of course someone is bound to research it, you act like every strategy game exists because of this shit. Pff
That's how things work. You wouldn't have Thomas Edison without Benjamin Franklin. Things are built on the knowledge of what came before them. I'm just saying Defender of the Crown was the inspiration for many games we play today and was considered a technical marvel of the time.
Dregory Dewhard The fuck are you on about? Defender of the crown was popular for its time sure but that doesn't equate to pioneering or a lasting influence. Even at the time a lot of reviewers simply noted its gameplay as fairly average, the only reason anybody ever gushed over it was because the Amiga version was arguably one of the most graphical advanced games of its time. Elaborate to me exactly what defender of the crown did to be a "pioneer" in strategy gaming, it literally has nothing else to its legacy other than simply being graphically advanced and popular for the time which as I said before does not equate to pioneering. You're really clutching at straws by saying we wouldn't have civ without defender, games like Utopia had a much greater influence on the strategy/simulation genre and civ itself. Stop making weak ass links in order to desperately try and create a more immediately convincing argument, honestly you would've been better just defending the game normally rather than making a fool out of yourself with this.
I'm so happy you guys are playing this. I used to love this game as a kid
I CALL A TOURNAMENT!!
Dan was on fire this episode! This was one of the funniest things I've seen on Grumps in a while. Good job, guys!
I had this game as a kid. Hated it forever, felt ripped off by the game I got. Then I understood how to play it, and it became one of my favourites. The game play is really really hard, but has that awesome feeling of triumph when you finally win. A battle against poorly made minigames, and completely no-mercy RNG
There can only be one Wilfred.
Wilfred Cthulu r.i.p. wilfred brimley.....ur time on the award winning film" cocoon" will forever be remembered
Wilfred Cthulu who are you!!!!!!!!!
And his name is Emile Rosales AKA Chuggaaconroy!
Rainbow Dash hes a new gg comment section meme like player 69 and that one guy with the link prof pic.
I SEE YOU EVERYWHERE
Oh my lord! I loved this game when I was younger. It can be super fun and in depth once you get a hold of it's...interesting mechanics. For instance, when jousting, you kind of always wanna aim your lance for the top center of your oponants shield, it's an almost 100% guaranteed win. When you go onto the ball and chain fight, you do the most damage most successfully, aiming for your opponants shoulders rather than his head or front side. It takes a bunch if playthroughs to get a handle on it.
I played the PC version. I had this hilarious playthrough where I allied with Wilfred, who killed a absolutely everyone in England some how (usually the Normans clean house).
With one Norman left, I called Robin to slit throats and backstabbed the guys home castle with everything I had.
Then I CALLED A TOURNAMENT.
(Jk I always hated jousting).
I thought this would be another game where Arin and Dan fight over a crown.
This felt like classic grumps and was genuinely funny. I liked it!
One of my fav playthroughs, Dan cracks me up in this one the way he pronounces everything lol
The way Dan said Lancashire made it sound like a fantastical land, when it's actually a land of people who drink a six pack of Stella every morning and are sustained exclusively on a diet of potato pies that contain wood chips and iron filings.
IamCombustible you mean that's not the case?
No offense to Americans but they simply can't pronounce English names. I don't blame them though cause some of our shit is stupid.
I'm pretty sure comic sans would have been a better font than they used here.
CattaBlah Games
Don't forget amateur Gynecologist
Only in terms of legibility. Comic Sans as font can take a running jump into the dank, 90s educator's poster hole in which it belongs.
CattaBlah Games will that hold up in court
mr. vincent van gogh I sure hope so or i'm in a looooooottttt of trouble
A golden age of the game grumps is beginning. I love it.
"I think I rented this from blockbuster" Stop making me feel old! I used to play Star Fox on the display there instead of renting it.
WOAH your Blockbuster had games on display!?
My blockbuster didn't had any games! Wtf
I'm going to Family Video tonight. I'm going to get some movies!
The display at Blockbuster is how I played and discovered Pokemon Stadium.
We didn't have a blockbuster back in my day. You either had to go to Erol's Video Store, or from a mom and pop rental place. Best time of my life, especially since I never had to pay for any of the rentals at the mom and pop type rental place since a friend of mine was friends with the owner.
Wait dash galaxy is one-off!?! But I was so invested!
We need more of this! 😂
"Who owns this piece of shit here? Reginald Front de BOOOOOOEF..."
Why did this have me in tears lauhing
Started giggling immediately. This is part of why I appreciate Game Grumps so much!
"Look at me I'm poorly drawn!"
Dan: *_"I will CALL A TOURNAME- oh."_*
Arin: *_"YOU CANNOT AFFORD IT!"_*
Please do a part two I was rolling laughing
"fuck that shit I want soldiers"
why was it this line that slayed me so hard
“Join me! My leadership is average!” is my new battle cry.
One of their best episodes lately. I _love_ this one. ^^
"Oh shit- _That's what they DO at tournaments..!_ "
I'm loving all of the one-offs recently!
How soon they forget, the fortress never loses.
5:41 this is a pretty good re-enactment of Stannis Baratheon taking on the Bolton army.
I love how enthusiastic Dan is.
This game brings back memories. I didn't play it, but there was a Three Stooges game that, as a joke, loaded the title screen of this game before the Stooges went "hey, WRONG SCREEN".
I can still hear the theme song.
The graphics remind me of the Three Strooges NES game...
All NES games look alike.
That Geena Davis similarity call-out really made me laugh :D (also looks like Carl Sagan)
I want that strongest swordplay ;)
Christ, I played this. Spent ages on it but had zero idea what was going on. Nostalgia time
I love seeing you guys try obscure games for one-ofs!
Dan as the worst, but most confident knight of the land fucking killed me.
I rocked this game on my Amiga 500. That computer was amazing for writing music.
I want a whole series
I've DEFINITELY seen this game somewhere before and I have no idea where! Any ideas?
Thanks for the episode, Grumps! As much as I get way too invested in the big series, I love when y'all do these silly little one-offs or short series.
I can totally keep watching this
I still have this game on my Amiga 500 floppies. *hahaha*
Very good! Keep thrusting!
this is funny asf I appreciate you guys
Wow this was great, I was in tears laughing after the first minute!
I used to play this. Based on my vague memory here is a list of your MANY mistakes.
1) You chose a weak jousting character and kept calling tournaments. I always chose Wolfric because you can CLEAN UP at tournaments. You can take lands as the spoils of victory, upping your armies.
2) You didn't conquer open territories when they were there. You chose a defended territory when multiple open ones were available to boost your income.
3) When jousting, the butter zone is to hit on the shield midway up on the inside half. If you win the joust, the melee is easy. But if you have Wolfric, the melee is easy regardless of whether you win. With a weak joust skill, I doubt it was even possible for you to win those melees. Make sure you DO NOT hit the horse or the man in the joust...it's dishonorable.
4) When raiding it's stab-retreat-stab-retreat, repeat ad infinitum, and advance as far forward as you can. Even with a low sowrdplay skill, you can win with that. Raiding gets you money which buys armies.
5) Never leave a zero garrison
6) Buy mixed armies. Soldiers are good, but catapults in a seige can DRAMATICALLY reduce enemy troop strength if done well. Knights are huge killers in the open field as long as you defend them with cannon fodder.
7) You can go to Sherwood (those woods above your castle) and recruit Robin to sneak attack the enemy before you attack. Robin will slit a bunch of throats overnight and you get to fight a diminished army.
I love Dan's British narrative voice. I wish there could be a story time with Dan series of sort. By the way Dan, love the "Robin Hood Men in Tights" reference, I love that movie.
One of the funniest Game Grumps episode!!
Omg I've seen this game before... I don't know where and I don't know why, but I can never forget that joust scene.
My friend owned this game, he often referred to it as Defender of the Crotch.
I loved how Dan said "Outflank!" with such confidence in that battle. No spoilers, tho. XD
Was Dan a King in a previous life, he is a natural =D
I loved this game when i was a kid!!
Ahhh its like Romance of the Three Kingdoms!
reginald forehead of beef, a noble name
"Hold your ground!"
"Fierce Attack!"
"Bombard!"
"Outflank..."
"RETREAT!!"
Perfect summary of Game Grumps.
"BATTLES RAGE ACROSS THE LAND"
That's basically the comment section.
I think we're going into another golden age of game grumps
I love this art style
