And now this is going into "Scrappy", the ultimate Carbon-Carbon Cub! This engine has been passed around and continues to set records in each rendition!
There’s not any other engine that sounds like the Lycoming IO-720! That engine makes a lot of torque and horsepower! I have ridden in a Piper 400 Comanche and it was awesome!
Lycoming IO 720 was used in the Piper Comanche 400 & Helio Courier never saw one put in a Lancair. Must have to add alot of lead in the tail for the CG.
I'm an A&P and long time engine-head. Man that is one cool propulsion system. I need about an hour-long MP3 of her in cruise to help me sleep and dream sweetly at night !
My bad, the motor is not bored (i am used to motorcycle talk) out, that would not be legal. The Pateys put the same kit on it from Lycoming that makes a 550 a 580. Mike plans on flying tomorrow!!
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!!! 😳 I m definitely a big motor fan but that thing is like a Lamborghini in the back of a big boat. BETTER!! Are you SERIOUSLY going to hang that on a CUB?! Nutters.... 👍🏼
Years ago the Italians used Lamborghini engines in their boats. BUT remember that Lamborghini started as a tractor builder. Only years later Mr Lamborghini got pissed at Enzo and decided to go into the car business. So you are bothe right and wrong.
That much heavy metal on the nose of that airframe with such a tiny thin wing shiver me timbers. Why not just go with a PT6 and have 700hp on reserve at half the weight? Regardless, outstanding work and beautiful machine.
Jeremiah Gazsi , we did the PT6 as well. Look up Turbulence. That’s ours. As far as all this engine up front, it is actually 6 lbs less weight than the TIO-550 we pull off, those turbos add a lot of parts and weight. We still fly the 720 regularly and love it; of course can’t touch Touch Turbulence 🤠👍.
Turbulence is *awesome*, great job guys, and the way I would have gone (and probably will go with a design I am working on). Quick followup question though, what made you do this 780 project after Turbulence?
Amazing jobs, both planes! Was the PT6 version significantly harder or easier than the 720 and 780? My friend Steve Wolf built himself a Lancair IV-P with a Walter 601. He gave me a ride up to Indiana, we took off like The Millenium Falcon, what a ride! I think I'm going to do a Turboprop project and wondering how difficult it is compared to standard piston. I feel very comfortable working on piston but wondering how difficult working with a turboprop is and what are the gotchas (besides $$$ of course). Can't wait to meet you guys in person next airshow, I live in Tampa, you guys going to Sun N Fun this year? If so, see you in a couple weeks!
Can't wait to see it fire up in Scrappy....
Wait they're putting it in Scrappy?!
@@xeels2708 Yep.....Check out his scrappy build videos. It will be glorious...
Done, now I cant wait to see scrappy go

Mark and Mike are insane, I mean that in the best way possible! lol
Sir, there's a airplane attached to your engine.
Holy shit! And that thing is going to go in a cub now? Insane
I know right..really going to something to see!
Lycoming IO 720 was used in the Piper Comanche 400 & Helio Courier never saw one put in a Lancair. Must have to add alot of lead in the tail for the CG.
What a beast level engine! Love it!
OMG!!! That sounds AMAZING!!!! It sounds like a Mustang!
Am i the only one who was nervous with how close to the prop the cameraman was
Yeah I was wondering how close this got to being on LiveLeak
wow! it's so cool!
Man that thing sounds awesome!
congratulations, great stuff, cant wait till one day i can get my own lancair legacy
Beautiful
That is a Lycoming 720 bored out and modified. In this video it was running really rich. We will post another video of it running smooth later.
Are you getting over 400 horsepower out of it?
It sounds like a muscle car on steroids with a radical cam...nice.
Scrappy will be insane.
That's awesome.
can't wait to see how it performs on scrappy the cub!
Holy smokes.. Look @ that massive engine.. Are y'all planning on traveling @ the speed of light??? 💪
I'm an A&P and long time engine-head. Man that is one cool propulsion system. I need about an hour-long MP3 of her in cruise to help me sleep and dream sweetly at night !
Hey Mike, congrats on the two records in C-1c class down in Mojave, seriously awesome achievements! Were they with your 780 beast or N913MP?
Sounds like a big cam 😊❤
Sick! I want your life! Love that plane!
Wow is the correct adjective sir.
Hey Mark, Could you tell me what landing lights you are useing? I like the look of the 3 small lights.
look at all that beautiful lock wire
Has this been flown yet? I'm very curious as to the performance.
Nothing better than a big block start-up in the morning!!!
My bad, the motor is not bored (i am used to motorcycle talk) out, that would not be legal. The Pateys put the same kit on it from Lycoming that makes a 550 a 580. Mike plans on flying tomorrow!!
8 cylinders for one seat sounds like great time
That IS a big engine.. that derives power from expansion of gases via heating.
Wow. Which motor is that?
Mo Power... that sounds nice.
What a beast
who put wings on that engine?
S Main deerr..... aren't you a witty fuck
@@stefandwoodhamDeerr..... you're getting lots of thumbs up with that one.
@@stefandwoodham aren't you an intolerant twat?
holy crap I cant wait to see that on scrappy!!!!
Send link?
Wow😲
Is this the plane you flew at the Orem Summerfest?
Will it be nose-heavy? How would you counter that, ballast in the rear fuselage?
More throttle
👍👍👏👏
Can I come work for you guys I have a spare 720 if it helps lol
wow
Oh my gosh, scrappy already looks insane on engine tests :o It is going to be more like a helicopter now I’ve seen it here.
Me either that thing in scrappy will go go!
Does lycoming offers turbocharged version of io-720?
how did the first flight go?
Steve Carter
Is this the aircraft that set the new cross country speed record? Is there a video of that record attempt?
Thumbs up for this guys listening "Shape of my heart", so good musik =)
I can not wait to see this thing fly in Scrappy!
That’s going to be insane
👍 👍 👍
Good lord.
I fucking want to meet this man and shake his hand!
What happened to this plane?
Did it become turbulence?
I think it did but I cannot confirm that from my search.
No it did not different planes
it's now a reno air racer.. But it's getting some 'mods'
"Holy mother of God" reminds me of muscle cars in Detroit in the late 60's-70's.
Woohoo bzzzzzzz as the camera man walks into the dark prop.
Ladies and gentlemen we have an airplane! 🛩
What happened to the CG? Got torn off and flung away??
How is this balanced? 200 pounds of lead in the tail?
And it was never seen again.
Is a great lacair legasy
Sounds like a drag racer!
Is that TSIO-720?? Next step, PT-6A haha!
It's a 780 basically a 720 with IO390 cylinders.
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!!! 😳
I m definitely a big motor fan but that thing is like a Lamborghini in the back of a big boat. BETTER!!

Ummm most big boats have the equivalent of about 10 Lamborghinis in the back.
@@ryanschaff123 yeah he's coming to made absolutely no sense
These big boats you speak of likely use diesel engines... something Lamborghini doesn't deal with
Years ago the Italians used Lamborghini engines in their boats. BUT remember that Lamborghini started as a tractor builder. Only years later Mr Lamborghini got pissed at Enzo and decided to go into the car business. So you are bothe right and wrong.
@@adrianpolinski9600 talking about the 8.2 liter V12 offshore race engines, something you clearly dont know shit about... And no they are not diesel.
i thought turbulence always had a PT6 !
Sounds delicious!
Wait, mike patey has a twin?
didn't he end up shoving a PT6 in this airframe instead?
Hyperious no
Man I always thought all race planes were a one seater that lookalike it has two seats.
Lol, couldn’t wait till daylight. I get it.
That is a huge motor. What speed to you get out of it? 400kts? Now you just need to pressurize it.

Turbulence is *awesome*, great job guys, and the way I would have gone (and probably will go with a design I am working on). Quick followup question though, what made you do this 780 project after Turbulence?
Jeremiah Gazsi we didn’t, this was before Turbulence. We built one 720 and one Supercharged 780 that holds several world records; then Turbulence.
Amazing jobs, both planes! Was the PT6 version significantly harder or easier than the 720 and 780? My friend Steve Wolf built himself a Lancair IV-P with a Walter 601. Now this engine has a carbon cub behind it....and an airboat prop in front O.M.F.G
I wanna build a 1/2 scale P-51 replica someday, I think I found a good engine choice.
The Falconer V-12 used in the Thunder Mustang is better.
Well.....my life is officially a POS
