Thanks, Coachies.. so evocative.. Freddie wrote this from his hospital room...and still was able to sing it... despite his failing health... appreciate your reaction!
This is the last song Freddie ever wrote. He was so sick at this point that instead of waiting for the rest of the band to record their part he told them he didn’t think he would make it until them and would just record the vocals and they could add the music after he was gone. It amazes me that he could still appreciate the beauty around him at this point.
He wrote this while looking out the window at the beautiful winter scene going on outside of his Montreaux apartment. They called it the Duck house. He always stayed there when he was recording in Montreaux. He was very very sick then and he had only a little while left to live when he wrote this. It’s amazing that he could still find the beauty in the world even though he was getting ready to leave it. He was an incredible and beautiful human being and it’s so sad that he had to go so young still so full of music and magic. There is a huge statue of Freddie outside that apartment in Montreaux and every year on Hhis birthday, September 5, people make the trek there to celebrate and they throw a huge birthday party in honor of Freddie. Now going on 34 years since he has been gone, Freddie Mercury still has so much influence on people. People still really love him and adore him and idolize him. He is a true Legend in every sense if the word. He once said that he wouldn’t be a rock star, he would be a legend. He was so right. He had that belief in himself and resolve to succeed from a very early age. There is not and never will be another like him.
Always brings a tear to my eye as I visualise the Swiss scenery that inspired Freddie to Write the song at Montreux... and ill as he was, his voice was still magical, and he recorded his vocals in a single take. They added the vocal arrangement and accompanying instrumentals quickly, as Freddie knew he had little time left, and wanted to get back home. 💔 Brian added his guitar solo a couple of years later...
Brian May recalled how Freddie wrote this song: “I love the last song Freddie wrote, ‘A Winter’s Tale.’ It doesn’t philosophize, it’s just about how beautiful life is. He wrote it one morning, looking out on the mountains from the other side of Lake Geneva (in Montreux, in a little house on the lake that we called The Duck House). He could obviously hear it all in his head, although he didn’t have any musical instruments with him. Freddie mainly used the piano for songwriting, but there were times when he’d get inspiration when he wasn’t around his instrument. It could be any experience; a skate on the pond or just about anything. I remember him coming into the studio and saying, ‘I’ve got this idea….just give me a few minutes.’ Then he brought it to life. It’s a beautiful track.” “The extraordinary thing is he’s talking about life and its beauty at a time when he knows he hasn't got very long to go. Yet there's no wallowing in emotion, it's just absolutely purely observed. So that's the way I wanted my solo to be." "When we eventually got to complete the "Made In Heaven" album, 4 years after Freddie passed, with the recordings he left us, I didn't want anyone to touch A Winter's Tale because I knew exactly how it should sound." "It was one of those things where I could hear it in my head, long before I actually got to play it," Brian said. When I played the Winter's Tale it was as mountains and the lake appeared and I could feel the emotions Freddie was going through at that time. "And when I recorded it, at my home studio, in my head I was there with Freddie in Montreux in those moments, even though this was happening long after he was gone," he added. Freddie wrote the song and recorded his vocals and keyboard parts live, in one take. He was a perfectionist and usually insisted upon music being completed prior to the vocal arrangement, but realizing that he had little time left, he acknowledged that he had to speed up the process. Freddie knew that this beauty, this world, this all-too-fleeting life was slipping away from him. Instead of being bitter, he pours out his heart about all the wonderful things, all the important things, all the appeals to the senses that were around him. Such a heartfelt song with a dreamy feel to it."
That's such a great story behind the history of this song. Thanks so much for sharing. It is truly incredible how this sounds given his circumstances when writing it.
A belated Merry Christmas to you both and all the viewers. This is a beautiful song and makes me want to relax in front of the fire with a glass of whisky. In fact that is what I'm going to do. Cheers!
Merry Christmas Guys and a happy reacting to Queen new Year! Freddie's lyrics in the song are about Montreux Switzerland where he spent a lot of time at during his final years. There is a Party there every year, the first weekend in September to celebrate Freddie's birthday and having been a few times I can confirm Montreux (sat on lake Geneva) is as beautiful as the lyrics suggest. YES YES Yes to Cowboys and Indians (its a Roger Taylor Song with his band "The Cross" - not Queen) xxx
Merry Christmas to you, dear friends. I wish you all good health, more reasons to smile and love in all its forms. Sooner or later, good will defeat absolute evil and common sense will triumph over all the madness that surrounds us every single day. 🙏♥️
It's heart-breaking that Freddie was so near the end of his life when he wrote these beautiful words. Thank you. PS Shiba Inu's are gorgeous with great personalities!
My world is spinnin' And spinnin' and spinnin' It's unbelievable Sends me reeling Am I dreaming? Am I dreaming? Where freddie sneaks it in…& then Brian’s guitar comes in. Amazing.
Brian has recorded his guitar part almost 4 years after Freddie's passing. They were on borrowed time since The Miracle album but A Winter's Tale along with Mother Love are Freddie's final songs. Recorded 6 months prior to his passing. Sadly the time has run out for Freddie... 😢💔
You both summed it up so perfectly, as Mrs Coach said, Freddie has a wonderful and beautiful voice, which songs like this really let shine, and Coach is right about the harmonies from Queen, they are just incredible.
Hi folks! Merry Christmas! For what it's worth, I don't listen to this record much. In fact, I think I listened to that last album when I bought it and not since. Everybody I love is gone and it seems to be just a reminder, so, I don't listen. But still, Freddie's voice at this point in history is a marvel; maybe more than at any other time in his career, considering how sick he was. And as for whether or not this is a "Christmas" song? If people can convince themselves that "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie (is the holiday central to the story? No. Not a Christmas movie. Full stop.) then why not? Happy New Year to yours~Love you guys!
LOL about the Die Hard being a Christmas movie. Doesn't make a lot of sense to us, either. We do think this song was appropriate for the day, but it's definitely not required to be called a holiday song and one could argue it isn't at all, no doubt about that. We appreciate you and wishing you a wonderful holiday season.
The last song Freddie ever wrote, he wrote about exactly what he saw at Lake Genevre in Switzerland, it is still exactly the same, when I visited it, one of my all time favourite places to visit.
Montreux, Switzerland became a safe haven for Freddie in his last years. There were no press following his every step as in the UK. He could walk around and no-one was intruding his privacy. He said: If you want a peace of mind, come to Montreux. He liked spending time at the small wooden cottage (Queen called it The Duck House) at the shores of Lake Geneva, watching the swans. He referred to them as "my swans" ❤. Queen had their own recording studio in Montreux since 1978 with their amazing sound engineer/producer David Richards. They were recording there untill 1995 (they mixed the Made in Heaven 1995 album with A Winter's Tale there). Mountain Studios are located in a casino Barrière de Montreux. It's the rebuilt casino and recording studio, the original hundred years wooden building burned down in 1971 and the story of fire is described in a Deep Purple's famous 1972 song Smoke On The Water. Queen came to Montreux as tax exiles (because UK laws took 84% of their earnings for taxes 😮 if they spent more than 90 days in the country in late 70ies till mid 80ies). In 2013 the studio was opened for public as Queen Studio Experience. Fans from all over the world visit it still. Not far from the studio on the lake side promenade there is Freddie's bronze statue with his right fist in the air. It was unveiled on 25th November 1996 (5 years after Freddie's passing) in the presence of Freddie's parents, Brian, Roger, Montserrat Caballe and Freddie's close friends. On the bottom of the statue there is the epitaph Brian wrote: Freddie Mercury Lover of Life - Singer of Songs, 1946 - 1991 💔
Merry Christmas Mr and Mrs Coach and thanks for all your Queen reactions. Please carry on into 2025. You are so good to listen to. Merry Christmas to all the Queenies too!
Taking into this was Freddie's last song and near the end of his life, he sounds better than a large majority of most singers. Glad you reacted to this and with you both a Merry Xmas
I think this and Bijou are their most beautiful songs. The more I’ve learned about Freddie the more I’m amazed at the person he was. He truly made this world a better place. I can only hope that when I face my own mortality that I do it with the grace and strength that he did. Merry Christmas Coach and Mrs. Coach. I enjoy your reactions and getting to know you two as well.
Freddie wrote such a beautiful, positive song full of gratitude for the beauty around him in Montreux when he only had a few months to live. The Miracle is a similar lyric. Their actual Christmas song is Thank God It's Christmas written by Brian. It is a wonderful song you should react to as well. Cowboys and Indians is a song by Roger with his group The Cross. He was such a workaholic that when he had any time off from Queen he kept recording with The Cross. He put an ad in the paper that basically said well known musician needs musicians to form a band. Queen always came first, though. Enjoy!
Merry Christmas to you two and your family. I love this song, it is so beautiful and image rich. Freddie is writing about his view from Duck House, a little place he would stay when he was in Switzerland. It was right on Lake Geneva in Montreux, one of Freddies favorite places and one where he could be at peace and not hounded by reporters and lookieloos. A beautiful statue of Freddie stands on the shore of Lake Geneva and there is a festival there every year to celebrate Freddie's birthday. This was one of two songs that Freddie had laid down vocals for that would be completed by the band after Freddie's passing. Brian wouldn't let anyone else touch this song or Mother Love becasuse he said he knew exactly how Freddie wanted them to be completed. Brian's guitar solo on this song brings tears to my eyes, it is so beautiful and emotive, you can hear Brian's aching heart and tears through the music. Thank you.
Freddie wrote this and recorded his vocals at the studio in Montreux on his last visit there before he died. He loved the beauty and peacefulness he felt there. I've visited there the last two years for his big yearly birthday celebration, and it really is a truly enchanting place. When you sit and look out on the lake, you know exactly what every word of this song meant to him. Merry Christmas, Mr and Mrs Coach!
Thank you, Coach & Mrs Coach, for giving us Queenies such a lovely treat. No matter how melancholy the circumstances so much beauty came out of them. Thank you to iris67si for retelling the story so well.
Queen's song “A Winter's Tale” is permeated with tender and bright feelings. She is charged with incredible positivity and seems to want to shout to the whole world: “How wonderful life is!” The lyrics describe those moments of the musician’s life that he spent in his beloved Switzerland, and emphasize the beauty of the area. I wish you a merry Christmas!
Hi Coach-couple and happy Christmas to you! Freddies last song sounds very christmassy. Thank you for introducing this piece of music to me. What a way to say goodbye. I have allways been a fan to Queen and it's quite exceptional that the whole band can participate in harmonies vocally. I loved this. World needs beauty and someone to point it out for us to understand . Thank you....Kaisa ❤
It’s a song that just takes you away and eventually brings you back, but there’s a few Queen songs that’ll keep you in that world for a wee while , always magically revoking feelings and emotions, memories thrown in for good measure, merry Christmas 🎉.
Tons of thanks Coach and Mrs. Coach for this wonderful gift. I think it is perfect for Christmas time! It is my first time listening to this song, and I find it a beautiful piece of music to add to my playlist. Merry Christmas to you and your family! Peace. ☮💕🎄
If you like queen's harmonies, then you should definitely check out Son and Daughter live at The Rainbow. It's an absolutely phenomenal performance. Thanks for this reacting and merry Christmas!
I want to suggest something completely out of the Christmas season! But I’d love to see you reacting to an Australian artist called Karise Eden and her cover of I’d rather go blind she has a very unique tone and voice which I think you both will love 🙌🏽 Merry Christmas btw 🤍🍾
Merry Christmas to you both and family also.... Thank you for another great reaction as always..... Here's a toast to many more to come in the new year 🍻🥃 have a great day!
Well, Cowboys and Indians it's not a Queen song but a 'The Cross' song witch is a band formed by Roger Taylor during the years of Queen's inactivity (1987-1990)..
Hello Mr & Mrs Coach. Winters Tale is a fantastic song. Thank you for doing this reaction. So glad you have finally started doing reactions from the final album made with Freddie's contribution. May I wish you both a very merry Christmas
Happy New Year, all people. Hope 2025 is fab for us all. Thanks for the reaction. Have you reviewed My Fairy King yet? Roger does some serious screeching as well as being beastly on the drums!
Brian has a soft voice , Rodger is raspy , John doesn’t sing but an amazing song writer and bass player, they also have a song thank god it’s Christmas.
Merry Christmas! I believe your next Queen song should be their double feature from 50 years ago 😮 at Christmas Eve " In The Lap Of The Gods (revisited) + Big Spender/Jailhouse Rock from Hammersmith Odeon 12/24/1975 (pick the uncut version from Zorastro channel). And I think you'll almost see those "cowboys and Indians" 😅 you've mentioned 😂😂 (I mean those amazing Christmas presents for the audience from our 👑 boys at the end of the first one 😜)
Guys, while you're on a Christmas song roll, you really need to check out Angelina Jordan. for example her rendition of the Christmas song: ruclips.net/video/SRKDiv9VfSI/видео.html But Christmas songs aside, do check her out. She's had a 10-year+ international career, and she's not even 19yo yet! I'm linking below two examples that may well blow your mind: - At 9yo, her rendition of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' I Put A Spell on You, her own arrangement is the closest I've heard to the original one - ruclips.net/video/nwFloCPXzCs/видео.html - At 18yo, her own original Bad Valentine, co-written with multi-award-winning songwriter Toby Gad (written hits with names such as John Legend, Beyonce, Madonna). Here is the jazzy piano version of Bad Valentine, ruclips.net/video/NwXalIW_w64/видео.html Keep up the great work, holiday greetings from Greece.
Cowboys & Indians by the Cross? I mean, I love em more than Queen. But the first record clearly falls behind the other two. I don't know if this is a first good choice. Anyhow, anything from this band is appreciated.
@CoachCastTV Yeah, the first Cross album feels more like Roger solo as the other's didn't contribute much. They get rockier on their follow-up record, which is my favorite in the whole Queen universe. There are three versions of Heaven for Everyone (of that particullar first Cross album): The Cross and Roger singing, the Cross and Freddie singing and Queen's version with Freddie's take. It was the leading single, so maybe there might be a day for comparison.
One of my favorites. Freddie's voice is amazing still. 🎉🎉👍🕊️🙏
Freddies hauntingly beautiful voice was a gift to the world.
Thanks, Coachies.. so evocative.. Freddie wrote this from his hospital room...and still was able to sing it... despite his failing health... appreciate your reaction!

That's such a great story behind the history of this song. Thanks so much for sharing. It is truly incredible how this sounds given his circumstances when writing it.
It made no 6 uk
They didnt bother putting it on greatest hits 3 album
Hi coach i know you don't like ballads but i definitely saw you swaying admit it you enjoyed it
Beautiful song!

It's heart-breaking that Freddie was so near the end of his life when he wrote these beautiful words. Thank you. PS Shiba Inu's are gorgeous with great personalities!
The Shiba is very nice looking, and not for the faint hearted owner. 😆

I'm sure I hear Brian's guitar already in mourning knowing at this point they were on borrowed time with Freddie xx

He is so positive whilst being so close to death.
Yes, indeed.
His voice is still impeccable at sutch a late stage in the poor blokes life rip Fred gone but not forgotten ❤

Very nice epitaph. Thanks for sharing this wonderful information, as always! And those taxes...geez!
Cowboys and Indians is a good Roger solo song with his band The Cross. I think you will enjoy it.
Freddie manages to conjure up the image of a perfect winter landscape with his voice and the lyrics 🥰

If you like queen's harmonies, then you should definitely check out Son and Daughter live at The Rainbow. It's an absolutely phenomenal performance.
Thanks for this reacting and merry Christmas!
Thank you and Merry Christmas to you.
Merry Christmas! Love you guys!
I want to suggest something completely out of the Christmas season! But I’d love to see you reacting to an Australian artist called Karise Eden and her cover of I’d rather go blind she has a very unique tone and voice which I think you both will love 🙌🏽
Merry Christmas btw 🤍🍾
Merry Christmas to you both and family also.... Thank you for another great reaction as always..... Here's a toast to many more to come in the new year 🍻🥃 have a great day!
Thank you! We hope yours is great also!
Merry Christmas 🎄
Same to you!
Well, Cowboys and Indians it's not a Queen song but a 'The Cross' song witch is a band formed by Roger Taylor during the years of Queen's inactivity (1987-1990)..
Yeah, I had it on the Queen list since it's one of the guys, and the video is on the Queen official channel.
@@CoachCastTV ah so.. yes it's a right thing.. well, it seems a bit like hearing a Springsting's song..very 'American'😜
Hi, I hope you both had a lovely Christmas. Thank you for this song, this song makes my heart melt, and it always makes me cry. 😢 ❤❤❤
Thanks for watching. We did have a good Christmas and hope you did also!
Merry Christmas Mr and Mrs.Couch Love Queen Thank you for this!! 🎄
Ps I had no idea this was one of the last song he ever wrote breaks my heart still beautiful and heartbreaking
Merry Christmas!
Hello Mr & Mrs Coach. Winters Tale is a fantastic song. Thank you for doing this reaction. So glad you have finally started doing reactions from the final album made with Freddie's contribution.
May I wish you both a very merry Christmas
Thanks. Merry Christmas to you!
Happy New Year, all people. Hope 2025 is fab for us all. Thanks for the reaction. Have you reviewed My Fairy King yet? Roger does some serious screeching as well as being beastly on the drums!
No, that one is not one we've done (that we can recall). Happy New Year to you!
Happy holidays to you and your family.
Thanks and same to you!
Merry Christmas you two! ⛄
Same to you!
Brian has a soft voice , Rodger is raspy , John doesn’t sing but an amazing song writer and bass player, they also have a song thank god it’s Christmas.
Yes that other song we did last Christmas. Thanks!
Guys, while you're on a Christmas song roll, you really need to check out Angelina Jordan. for example her rendition of the Christmas song: ruclips.net/video/SRKDiv9VfSI/видео.html
But Christmas songs aside, do check her out. She's had a 10-year+ international career, and she's not even 19yo yet! I'm linking below two examples that may well blow your mind:
- At 9yo, her rendition of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' I Put A Spell on You, her own arrangement is the closest I've heard to the original one - ruclips.net/video/nwFloCPXzCs/видео.html
- At 18yo, her own original Bad Valentine, co-written with multi-award-winning songwriter Toby Gad (written hits with names such as John Legend, Beyonce, Madonna). Here is the jazzy piano version of Bad Valentine, ruclips.net/video/NwXalIW_w64/видео.html
Keep up the great work, holiday greetings from Greece.
Many thanks. Happy Holidays!
Can we get a BTS mv reaction? they have amazing songs… fake love, black swan, blood sweat and tears, idol, dynamite, butter and etc
The reaction 😐😐😐😐😐😐😐
Cowboys & Indians by the Cross? I mean, I love em more than Queen. But the first record clearly falls behind the other two. I don't know if this is a first good choice. Anyhow, anything from this band is appreciated.
Yeah, because it was Roger I had it categorized under Queen reactions. Thanks for the info!
