    I've taken several Caribbean cruises, one transatlantic (QM2), the Norwegian Fjords (on day/overnight ferries), and I have a Panama Canal cruise booked for December 2021. I've also cruised the Nile River in Egypt! And I'm a solo traveler!

    If going to Norway, I would suggest taking Hurtigruten. It is smaller ships (100-600 passengers) and sails during the day as well as night. That way you really get to see the fjords that you won't see on the large cruise lines. It doesn't have all the entertainment that the larger ships do. And it is more relaxing. I think you get a better taste of Norway.

    Pride of America on NCL doing 7 days across the all of the Hawaiian Islands was an awesome experience. Each island is different and you get enough time to explore them all. We rented cars on each island and just ran around to different sights and packed everything we could into discovering what each island had to offer. I've been all over the Caribbean on cruises and this cruise blew all of those away.

    • @sunspot42
      @sunspot42 3 года назад +1

      I visited Maui over a decade ago and have wanted to return ever since as well as visit the other islands. I'm not all that interested in cruising for the sake of cruising, but using a cruise ship as a giant floating hotel where your room follows you from island to island makes a LOT more sense than packing and unpacking every couple of days and dealing with the hassle of an airport. I'd love to fly to Maui, hop on a cruise ship and spend a few days on each island. 7 days seems kinda short though - I'd like to do 14 if I could find the time.

    • @CADguru78
      @CADguru78 3 года назад

      @@sunspot42 Yeah If the ship could have pulled into Maui for 14 days that would have been fine by me. The cost of staying on Maui is pretty steep to have similar accommodations and have all your meals covered. I liked the other islands though, they all have their own flavor of paradise. NCL ports out of Oahu though because Waikiki is much cheaper than Maui for those that want to bookend their trip with a few extra days. Flights, hotels, food are all cheaper on Oahu.

    For Alaska - absolutely, 100 per cent, get a balcony cabin - sitting out and watching whales and eagles - and I mean a LOT of eagles - is amazing.
    For Arctic/Antarctic (I've been to both twice) - unless you are absolutely set on seeing polar bears, Antarctica is the choice.
    I'm a photographer and I went on a photo expedition with some of the best landscape photographers in the world (I'm not one of them - i was assisting).. and standing on the deck at 3am under 24hr daylight, a guy who has been everywhere and shot everything for National Geographic looked at me and said, "you know, this is the closest any of us will ever get to experiencing what it's like to visit another planet", and he was totally right.
    The Arctic is great - I've been to the North Shore of Alaska, sailed around Svalbard and been to the Arctic ice pack twice... and it's amazing - but it still looks like earth. Places in the Antarctic... look like nothing else. If I could only ever travel one place, it would be Antarctica.
    And the smaller the ship, the better. I have been on cruises of 5000, and cruises of 24. In Antarctica i was on one of 150, and one of 24, and in the Arctica, one of 3500 and one of 120. Smaller is always, ALWAYS better in those places *IF* you want to get off the boat and explore via zodiac.

    One reason to do the Transatlantic aboard the QM2 is that she’s designed for that run with a deeper draft and sharper prow, unlike every other cruise ship, which is pretty much a barge. You’d much rather be on her if you run into heavy weather in the Atlantic, which can still happen, no matter what the season.

Also, River cruises in Europe are nice as you get to visit some of the smaller European towns and villages that you might not otherwise get to visit by flying direct.

    I think you have mentioned some of the more interesting cruises available in the pre covid era. In that time, a wonderful trip was had by my wife and I for a special birthday was from Buenos Aires to Barbados along the Brazilian and French Guiana coast. Post covid, we Australians are locked into coastal cruises, but a strong recommendation would be for non Australians looking for the ultimate cruise into the wilds would be to travel from Darwin to Cairns and explore some of the most isolated parts of this world. Regardless of the location of your audience, genuine travellers would enjoy the direct flights from LHR to Australia, whilst US travellers only have a shorter hop to either Melb. or Sydney and enjoy some genuine sunshine before heading to Darwin. Let's face it, not having travelled for close on 16 months, what is stopping the real explorers?

      @V R I'll have to ask my friend if she remembers because I don't. It's been a very long time since I've been back to Russia. When we went, they were first starting their river cruising and the company was very small. They had 3 ships and the ships carried about 100 people each. There were quite a few "bumps" that had to be worked out, but I still had such a wonderful time. It was very interesting and relaxing. It was a 2 week cruise from Moscow to St. Pete. It was called a White Nights Cruise, and I had a wonderful time. The food wasn't so good back then, but we made do. Just had to watch out for the "fish surprise," which could be any of the offered courses and was usually pretty bad. You could smell it before you found it...lol

    One cruise that don't figure in your list but is worth a look is a cruise on the Nile. I have done that in 2010 and it's the only cruise I have done so I may be biased. I was not on the big ships, but on a Dayahiba, a small sailboat that have only 6 regular cabin and a double luxury one. When I done the cruise, we where only 6 passenger, a couple, two older sister and the daughter of one and finally me who traveled alone. Since the other people had already been in Egypt, I was alone with the guide to do the excursions. Another advantage of a dayahiba is that the bigger ships all pass the nights at pre-ordained ports stacked like sardines, so you look outside your window and you only see another ship, but the dayahiba stopped anywhere along the river so we would wake up with beautifull scenery. I highly recommend that cruise.

    You're talking my language here Gary. Most of these are already on my/our bucket list. Our next cruise is Alaska, part of a land and cruise tour package in 2020. The cruise part will be with HAL and does include the Inside Passage and Glacier Bay. We are pretty excited to go finally. We've been to other South Pacific islands (fabulous BTW) and now I think we will think about adding French Polynesia to our list.

      Not sure if you have been to Queensland but the best reef day cruises do not meet the port times. Instead you end up going to the busier pontoons or Green Island, which may be fun but isn't as nice experience. Also most cruises stop atleast 2 hours from the Whitsundays so its a lot of time just on the journey for an excursion. I think Queensland is best if you base yourself somewhere like Cairns/Port Douglas or the Bundaberg/Lady Elliot Island - its more bang for the buck. I wouldn't discount a Qld cruise but I would suggest going into it knowing the limitations compared to flying. Imo you get a better cruising experience from other countries.

    • @paultakeotravels6325

      Never been to Australia. If I do go it will still be a few years down the road. Was looking at Princess and Celebrity which do almost identical cruises from Sydney, traveling to Airlie Beach, Cairns, Port Douglas, Brisbane and end in Sydney. I want to thank you for the valuable tip.

    • @Amber86queenbee
      @Amber86queenbee 5 лет назад

      PaulTakeoTravels thanks for being open to suggestions. I looked into a cruise myself and the port times and travel distances didn't make it as worthwhile as just flying. I'm from Brisbane - as much as I love living here it is far from a must do and you may be better off prioritising time elsewhere. If you are after a cruise going through Brisbane then check if there are excursions either to our zoos (we have better then down south where you can go in enclosures to feed kangaroos) or the Gold Coast beaches (about 1-1.5 hour drive). Airlie Beach does have a far amount of travel needed to the Whitsundays - don't do a reef day trip from here as its the worst part of the reef, but consider Whitehaven Beach. Cairns and Port Douglas would be for the reef or rainforest. Port Douglas though has better options outside of the port times (search Wavelength Reef Charters if you are a snokeller). Cairns cruise excursions tend to go to Reef Magic Cruises which can be fairly busy but gives you options like intro dives, snorkel safari, helicopter rides and snuba. That may appeal to you but there are plenty of options that give a more small boat experience from Cairns albeit outside of port times. Dont do Green Island as it gets worst reviews. And dont expect a beach experience in North Qld. I hope this helps, I just recommend weighing up if it is the right choice for you. All the best.

    Currently 3 days out I'd a 14 day Covid-19 pneumonia hospital stay.
    Please "DO NOT STOP MAKING VIDEOS, PLEASE?" You & I agree on everything you have promoted on your videos. Continue, you are the best & most "true, factual cruise information" I have ever agreed with.
    If people are smart & truly want their cruise to be all it is expected to be, they need to watch your video on where ever their cruise destination is to. Personally as a Cruise Commodore myself with Cunard. Future cruisers can learn all from your videos. You're not a big time "cruise or travel agency" attempting to sell them everything for a commission. I believe (being a cruiser & agent for the traveler/cruiser) all future cruisers, travelers would learn intelligent honest answers from you. Keep making those videos, highest form of continuous updated information.
    Thank you from one cruiser to another.

      Conservatively Yours unfortunately I’ve never been to Alaska but the fjords were beautiful and I would totally recommend ! You got signal until midnight some nights because you are travelling up the fjords ! In the summer it didn’t really get dark so at midnight it felt like 18:00pm and it is quite expensive, 100 kroner was £10. Everyone in Norway was friendly and the views were stunning!!

    Hey Gary nice video. I’ve been on 17 cruises all over the world. I would argue Alaska pales in comparison to Norway, I would not recommend Alaska. If you go do not go in September (rainy cloudy & cool). Alaska cannot hold a candle to the fjords of Norway. I took a 2 week cruise all the way up to Honingsvag. Other places that rival Alaska include the southern South America Cape Horn with the largest glacier outside of the Arctic.
    What you didn’t include which was absolutely amazing was SE Asia, Bali & Phang Nga bay Thailand, WOW! This is a must see! Expensive to fly there but worth every penny. I did a 17 night cruise on Sapphire Princess.
    Cheers!

I love history so maybe that’s the problem. It’s also very expensive here, you get much better value going overseas. Especially during the pandemic in Victoria, it’s been an absolute nightmare.
