      Always remove the Cap first! This is just in case the cap is stripped. If you can't get the cap off and you have drained the oil you're stuck with no oil until you can get it fixed. Some oil caps pop like gas caps do and can strip. Kind of rare but it only takes one time to wish you did it the right way.
      Also pop the dipstick up a couple inches for venting, as the dipstick goes directly into the oil pan.

    • @443drag
      @443drag 3 года назад +1

      I used to do this for a living. Always remove the cap first. Because has been pointed out below. What if you

    Just one more important detail that I don't see mentioned anywhere yet: Make sure that the gasket comes off when removing the old filter. Also, I see price comparisons for doing your own oil changes, but there are other advantages as well. Peace of mind for one. Oil change places have been known to screw up or even intentionally not give you the requested grade of oil.

      yes the dealership you go to charging $39 to change your oil most likely not using full synthetic Mobil 1 0W20 oil they use bulk generic cheap oil that comes in a 55 gallon drum sometimes when they get real busy they just reset your oil life without even changing your oil and filter i know some technicians that do this hahah

    Thanks for the video. My 2016 Accord 4cyl is about one year old. My dealer did the first oil change for free at around 6,000 miles (with a slight upcharge for synthetic oil). Honda's maintenance reminder is now again signalling "15% oil life left," and nagging for a change, at only 11,000 miles. I've usually gone 7,500 miles between changes of full synthetic oil in my other cars, so I'm debating what to do now - follow Honda's nag light, or stick to every 7,500 miles.
    Anyway, I hadn't crawled under yet to see where the drain plug and filter are located, so your video is helpful for that, and confirmation of 17mm wrench (like my wife's Pilot). I have two suggestions. First, spread a few layers of newspaper under the drain bucket when you drain the car and later when you transfer the oil to your bigger container (I use a five-gallon container) to take to recycling center (I take mine to O'Reilly Auto Parts). Second, go to Walgreens and buy a box of latex gloves in your size and use them when changing the oil. It makes cleaning up SO much easier, and avoids any potential health concerns from warm used oil sitting on your skin for a while. I wish I had started doing that years before I did.

    • @ratm514

      Brent Johnson
      no problem! I now have a transfer pump system so I don't spill oil anymore and gloves! lol Good note on laying out some paper around the drain bucket...the oil always comes out fast and splashes everywhere. also, I would stick to 7500 miles with full synthetic.

    • @brentbrentj
      @brentbrentj 7 лет назад +1

      Thinking about it a bit more, I might follow their nag light while the car is under warranty. I wouldn't want them claiming that I voided the warranty by ignoring the nag light and going 7,500 miles between changes. But once the warranty expires, I think I'll switch to every 7,500 miles.

    • @ratm514
      @ratm514  7 лет назад +7

      The maintenance minder doesn't reset automatically. 1) Turn the ignition on (do not start the engine).
      2)Display the engine oil life by repeatedly pressing the SELECT/RESET button.
      3)Press and hold the SELECT/RESET knob for more than 10 seconds. The engine oil life indicator and the maintenance item codes blink.
      4)Press the SELECT/RESET knob for 5 seconds or more. The displayed maintenance item codes disappear, and the engine oil life display returns to 100%.
      5)Turn the ignition off and then start the engine to verify the indicator has been reset.

    • @ratm514

      That was the first oil change I've done on that Accord, but I run synthetic in every car I have. There is no downside other than it's slightly more expensive, but you can run longer OCI's (oil change intervals) with synthetic. I usually go ~7k miles between changes in my gas cars and 7k-10k in my diesel Golf.

    • @pierrekouzi7416
      @pierrekouzi7416 8 лет назад

      Most Honda dealers use a synthetic blend 0w-20 oil for these vehicles. I would have the oil changed every 5,000 miles for the best protection for your engine. The maintenance minder system isn't that reliable in my opinion since you'll be waiting for 10-15k miles for the wrench light to come on in order to change your oil.

    • @ratm514
      @ratm514  8 лет назад

      This. I run the Mobil 1 0w20 Full Synthetic for 5-6k miles. The Maintenance Minder is just a counter...it doesn't actually sample the oil quality to give the readings.

    • @anonymouse9355
      @anonymouse9355 7 лет назад

      Your initial oil change should be done at 10k. Honda uses a high moly oil that reallys hould be left in for the full 10k before you change it.
      After that, its really up to you. Some ppl do every 5k, but with a quality synthetic and filter, you could do 10k easily. I split the difference and do mine at 7.5k

    • @ratm514
      @ratm514  8 лет назад +2

      It will technically be "slightly" harder on the engine during cold starts and before the engine is up to temperature. The first number of the oil is the viscosity when the oil is "cold" and the lower the number the thinner the oil is when cold. 5w20 and 0w20 will have the exact same viscosity at operating temp, but the 0w20 will flow better on startup and lubricate better than 5w20 when the engine is cold.

    • @PhoenixTun

    • @nelsblair2667
      @nelsblair2667 5 лет назад

      You could go with the maintenance minder but my blackstone lab results for several Accords show that outside of your warranty interval, 20k miles is fine if you have good oil and a good filter. One option is a fully synthetic oil with a good filter (e.g. honda blue oe, wix xp, Bosch is likely best). Alternatively you could change the oil annually, in case you roll fewer than 20k miles in a year. These Accords are 2015 with 107k miles, 2003 with 321k miles, 2002 with 180k miles, 1999 with 217k miles. If you really want to know, get oil analysis from a lab. If you really don’t want to know, then follow the maintenance minder.

      Hi. Don’t you have to raise the car on all 4 wheels off the ground to drain the oil completely and not on 2 front wheels only making it tilt on one side and not draining the oil completely? I’m thinking some of the oil gets trapped on one side and not drain if you don’t raise it on all 4.

    • @NL-fe4le
      @NL-fe4le 6 лет назад

      Bred Saint So after you drain the oil, turn the car on & back up off the ramps onto level ground to drain the rest. Works for me

    I have a question. I have the same accord model as yours. Honda recommended 0w20. I'm living in a climate of 37-39 Celsius at average. Is 0w20 the appropriate oil or will it be better to change to 0w40? (Btw Honda manuals says it's alright to use from 0w20 up to 15w40)

    • @ratm514
      @ratm514  8 лет назад

      I'm inclined to say that 0w20 should still be fine. If your cooling system is working properly the engine temps should stay the same as they would if you lived in a cooler climate once the engine is warmed up. You might want to check out Bob is the Oil Guy forums. That would be a good place to ask this question as they are pretty knowledgeable over there.

    1. There is a cover across the bottom of the car you have to remove to get to the drain plug.
    2 The "5 gallon bottle" of mobil 1 is really 4.73 0:58 (pause) . The whole bottle is fine.

    • @ratm514
      @ratm514  8 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the updated info. Our 2014 doesn't have an underbelly cover that has to be removed to drain.....they must have changed that. I assume you mean "5 quart bottle".....and yes it takes pretty much the entire bottle. 5qt=4.73L.

      Thanks! I just did a quick search before doing this and didn't see any videos of the newer cars so I figured it would help some people. Definitely an easy service. Less work than my 545i which has an oil filter housing you have to drain separately, then the oil pan, then remove the housing to replace the filter, then add 9 quarts of oil lol

    Please never start the engine unless you put the cap on. Always fill the oil filter at least 3/4 to avoid airlock. Before the drain oil loses the oil cap to avoid vacuum lock.

    • @richardmorse8408

      I've used rubber ramps for years. They're a little wider but I still feel a bit queasy I'm going to go over the ends even though there are detentes. I put a large piece of cardboard under the drain catch pan just in case. I have a 1998 Accord V6 which has the oil filter at the front so good access. No oil filter wrench needed.
