- A herd of New Zealand sheep are being watched over by a robotic dog called Spot. The New Zealand software company Rocos is training the Boston Dynamics-designed robot to work on farms to help 'relieve the strain of worker shortages, and create precision in farming’. Another Boston Dynamics robot is also undergoing testing in Singapore, reminding members of the public to maintain physical distancing in a public park

For those worrying about actual dogs: I don’t think this would be a cost effective to replace doggos. They mostly seem to be using it as a way to practice Spot’s programming.

I wish they would show more of the robot actually herding sheep. They only show the first to scenes of the robot walking up to the herd. I want to see it make complex decisions like direction changing, heading off the herd and so on. I'm sceptical of it's it's actual capabilities.
I saw a robot dog trying to get up off the ground. I saw it walking up some steps. I saw it walking through a vineyard and walking slowly next to some sheep. There was no sheep herding. Typical Guardian clickbait.

My livestock guard dogs bred for centuries to protect their flock from predators would have charged your machine and tried to turn into scrap. They let nothing get near their flock on 2 or 4 legs.

Great gimmicky trial to pique people's interest, but I'm sure they'll find better uses for the technology. (They must have had ideas of what it could be used for when they invented it). I liked the design but there is no way this can replace a sheep dog. I'd be interested to know what it will really be used for one day.

Very useful tech there given that help tech savvy farmers acquire more accurate data to keep an eye on their produce and livestock. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford that. I think farming will still rely on old, practical, and generally low tech methods until automation becomes the norm.
Still, the use of automated quadropeds are quite an interesting concept for farming.
Those robots were developed with US government grants, but the military determined they were of no use.
