I thought it was a real Boston dynamics video until he was climbing on the boxes. I couldn't figure it out but there was something wrong with the feet. But still was blown away . you guys are good.
Well fellas, I am a professional VFX artist and CG animator and compositor. Overall, I liked it, but here are some comments made to be constructive: More feather in your clean plate mattes, and match the grain level, I was able to see the lines from the too much to none at all grain level on the mattes. Are you compensating for depth of field? In some shots the CG robot appears more sharp than other objects/people at the same focal distance. (Detective Pikachu had that problem here and there as well) The contact shadows on the... wood blocks? didn't quite nail it, a bit of hover foot going on there. And that's at a glance. From one digital artist to a group of others. I love you guys!
I agree, especially on matching the noise level. You can denoise easily with Neat Video (the latest version is amazing) and then re-apply noise on top of everything, including the robot (which is missing the noise here and there). As for the hovering foot, Clint should have worn shoes similar to the robot so you'd keep that part instead of removing it.
Everything you guys mentioned we were certainly aware of. For various reasons we were not able to address them though, mostly time. The final LUT also brought out a LOT of detail that was more subtle in the raw renders.
@@SirWrender I always increase the gamma in the AE window to check if the blacks match! But I understand the lack of time... next time hit me up, I'd be more than happy to work with you guys again!
I've been thinking this for awhile, and I'm surprised they haven't already! Considering it's one of the easiest places they can film in, why not have it on standby for a quick model when they need a bit more in depth VFX shot?
I had no idea you were the people behind the "Bosstown Dynamics" gifs I've been seeing. I hadn't a clue how they were made before this, but I'm actually pretty impressed! One less thing to cry into your pillow at night about!
I like how you talk about not just the CG side of things but also the 2D aspect at 9:45. Roto & paint/prep is quite tricky at times and sometimes harder than the compositing side itself, I'm currently a junior nuke comper & roto/paint artist myself.
Ironically, some of the “mistakes” you made in the shoot that added complexity to your VFX work is also what sells the realism of the final product. You should know that, after I realized I wasn’t watching a real Boston Dynamics robot become sentient before my eyes, what made me really appreciate your work were those little details that you THINK you want to avoid but trust me therein lies the art. The first watching made me subscribe. The third watching made me join your Patreon. Congratulations gents.
Showed the video to my co-worker, who does the CGI for our company, and he jumped at screen as soon as the "robot" climbed up onto the first box, pointing out the foot on the box looking off, but otherwise loved the video and was dying of laughter.
You guys did an AMAZING job on this project!! I have seen many Boston Dynamics demo videos over the years, and thought that this was just one of their latest ones. I didn't realize that I fell for a parody, until the robot "ball-kicked" the technician! You should all be very proud of this piece of work. I certainly would be!

I can't believe I saw people falling for this video on Twitter, you guys did a great job! I saw a tweet with a clip from this video and all of the replies were about how you guys are going to cause the robot revolution 💀
Congratulations on a very well made video. Considering that just the 2 of you worked on this is no small feat in itself! Constructive Criticism: The only thing that felt off was the lighting in some of the shots and some minor foot slippage. Maybe being outdoor with light sources that are bigger and less likely to change due to people moving around would have led to better lighting realism?
I watched the video you are describing and almost took the bait until I noticed the robots feet did not seem to be grounded to the boxes he was stepping on. That said, it was an amazing job, I certainly couldn’t have replicated it, and it was a great spoof. Well done.

My man Stump The Gnome got skillz
Stump The Gnome I ain’t even subbed and it showed up in my recommendations
Reasons why I've always wanted to make an invisible BMX rider video, but haven't for $500 Wren.
Props to you guys for making this happen. SO SO technically difficult
This is so inspiring and informative. Diving into an idea is the only way to learn how to handle the unexpected challenges. Crew, your enthusiasm is infectious!
The final product actually seemed really good, nice one.
Where is the final product ??
i am serious ... do they have another channel or what ??

Wren is so sweet and pure
Must be protected at all costs
But honestly the biggest danger to him is probably himself
I love Wren but at 3:56 I hate him
4:30 a southern Nevadan understands your pain. We can’t pretend to be stronger because too much of us are too lazy to go outside to our backyard pool.
Editing Skills: *GOD*
Acting Skills: _Peasant_
i think their great actors
They didn't really act?
@Aliyan S Like they were mostly just pushing the robot around and their faces were obscured.
@Aliyan S I really don't know what kind've performance you were expecting then
I’ll be honest- I straight up believed you got Boston Dynamics to send you that robot and you were controlling it by remote or something.
I thought it was real up until it somehow grabbed the hockey stick without hands
I thought it was a real Boston dynamics video until he was climbing on the boxes. I couldn't figure it out but there was something wrong with the feet. But still was blown away . you guys are good.
2:27 pay close attention. the chain goes through the visor!
It doesn't
Well fellas, I am a professional VFX artist and CG animator and compositor. Overall, I liked it, but here are some comments made to be constructive:
More feather in your clean plate mattes, and match the grain level, I was able to see the lines from the too much to none at all grain level on the mattes.
Are you compensating for depth of field? In some shots the CG robot appears more sharp than other objects/people at the same focal distance. (Detective Pikachu had that problem here and there as well)
The contact shadows on the... wood blocks? didn't quite nail it, a bit of hover foot going on there.
@@SirWrender Story of my life pal. It's the reality of being a production artist. Much love for you and your team
I love seeing those comments written by a VFX artist)))
I find it hard to make a youtube video like this, and these guys did the video about them doing something reeeeaaaallllyyyy hard
You guys should recreate your whole office so people can explore it in VR / on PC
I've been thinking this for awhile, and I'm surprised they haven't already! Considering it's one of the easiest places they can film in, why not have it on standby for a quick model when they need a bit more in depth VFX shot?
security alert! They have so much expensive gear in there it can't be a good idea to make a map of it online.
Yaassss
I had no idea you were the people behind the "Bosstown Dynamics" gifs I've been seeing. I hadn't a clue how they were made before this, but I'm actually pretty impressed!
One less thing to cry into your pillow at night about!
I like how you talk about not just the CG side of things but also the 2D aspect at 9:45. Roto & paint/prep is quite tricky at times and sometimes harder than the compositing side itself, I'm currently a junior nuke comper & roto/paint artist myself.
I can see robots doing this in 50 years "Well I imported this human into Cinema4D..."
"Wrender" LMAO "Cool Whhhip?"
Dope vid! My sis sent me a clip thinking it was real, I did too until I recognize you guys from the CGI videos lol
I watched that video on Twitter. Everybody felt so bad for the robot! Great job, guys. Nailed it.
U Know Ur Video Was On The News 2 days Ago...
Bro got ignored
*"Wrender."*
Wren 2019
More like 2004 but yeah
Hope u guys remain United.
Sometimes too much creativity is bad for your ego.
Carbon Fiber isn't really *the* strongest material.
Its more like the strongest material for its weight.
Steel for example is stronger than Carbon Fiber, but weights a fuck ton more per cm³
KappaKappaKappaKappa well no shit
@@HH-kl8ed What do you mean "no shit"? Its not that obvious for most people, OBVIOUSLY
KappaKappaKappaKappa are you serious? Doesn’t everyone know this???? I knew about this when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade lmao
@@HH-kl8ed Congrats you know this..
But as stated before, not everyone does.
Im sure you dont know stuff everyone else does, so whats your point
KappaKappaKappaKappa what confuse me are claims made by people: carbon fiber is the strongest!
Your video is becoming so VIRAL right now !
Great job guys ! 0/
I can't believe I saw people falling for this video on Twitter, you guys did a great job! I saw a tweet with a clip from this video and all of the replies were about how you guys are going to cause the robot revolution 💀
Would been funny if Boston Dynamics commented saying they need there robot back LOL
Perfect work man!
Me: Oh, wren recommends a shirt! bet!
Shirt: *costs $80*
Me: o.o
Yeah, I looked around their site. One pair of shorts was $88. EIGHTY-EIGHT DOLLARS.
Expensive 🙄🙄
Superb explainer.
What I want to know now is the hardware powering all this and the time from start to finish.
I watched the video you are describing and almost took the bait until I noticed the robots feet did not seem to be grounded to the boxes he was stepping on. That said, it was an amazing job, I certainly couldn’t have replicated it, and it was a great spoof. Well done.
If Wren and Clint do an After Effects & Cinema 4D tutorials channel would be greeat !! Love the work they do and the way they explain things, a little more of "how to" in the videos would be amazing !! Keep the good job you're doing !!
Yes I would love that also!! I know there are other tutorials on RUclips but I love how these guys explain things..
Oml I love staying up watching this
You guys are really talented. I hope you know just how many people out here love your work. That video was one of the absolute best you've done! Keep up the great work 🙏
Now I see “FAKE!!!” And a link to this vid on every Boston Dynamics video.
people just cant handle the thought of that being the future is all i guess.
Honestly the video was really well done.
You guys inspire me. I'm not traditionally trained in the field but I do have an honest love and interest in it. Seeing you have fun and kick ass at the same time makes me want to learn more.
Boston Dynamics Robots rebelling? That would be the Terminator
Terminator pre-release beta. :P
