    *UPDATE* - Several people have asked "why not just use a NAS?". That question implies that the only use here is to play back MP4 files that are stored on drives and that can be played back via an app on a Smart TV. If that was the only goal, sure, that could work... except how do you backup the NAS? Remember that RAID is not backup.
    Putting that issue aside, a full PC on your TV can do so much more. As noted in the video, you can access streaming web sites that may not have an app for your favorite device or TV, you can rip DVD and Blu-Rays to ISO files and mount them, keeping their contents intact. You can play back odd and unsupported media formats that "apps" would complain about. You can transcode media to other formats, and at the end of the day, have absolute control over your PC/TV experience.
    Backing up the local storage is easy for $5 per month via Backblaze (link in video description for a free trial), and you can add/remove whatever parts you want to make it your own.
    This sort of media PC isn't for everyone, but for what I use it for, no app would replace it, I like having a full Windows desktop on my TV that I can do whatever I want with.

      I backup my 16TB NAS to two 8 TB external USB drives, using the GoodSync software. So far, it's worked pretty good, and saved my butt once after the Synology hybrid RAID became corrupted.

    • @TechDeals
      @TechDeals  5 лет назад +4

      @@SydneyRadio2UE That's a good start... my concern is that unless you take that backup off-site, then you're at risk for all the single location risks for data. Fire, theft, etc.

    I built a wonderful media PC a few years ago, and my wife absolutely loves me for it. Seriously... she uses it almost every day to stream all sorts of movies she finds. Especially foreign movies, because she grew up outside of the US. It has saved us big dollars, not having to sign up for special cable. Windows 7 has a free TV Guide function in Media Center, which you can buy a cheap remote for. And you can record off the air or cable. Lately, I have been exploring Linux. And this is a great PC to try it with. When Windows 7 is no longer supplying the TV Guide function, Linux will with the Myth TV App. And no Windows 10 crap! I wish I could switch all my PC's. But Linux does not support a lot of games as yet.

    Intel Quick Sync screams! Using Handbrake, I went from 10 hours to encode 2 hour 4K to just under 2 hours using the I7 8700K. The tricky part, is making sure the BIOS properly configured. That might be a good subject for future video?

    • @Mico605
      @Mico605 5 лет назад +2

      I've been praising QuickSync for years, even for OBS streaming/recording it is amazing. People seem to massively overlook it and just go with higher core cpu or second pc or talk about nvidia encoder.

      @@Mico605 I really don't get it with QS being a poor quality, I thought to myself, no one is going to scrutinise frame by frame. Prior to upgrade my 550 to a 1070, I used QS to record my gameplay.
      My video editing, I usually try to make the CPU (6700k) usage very low, thus, I'm using NVENC+QS to encode/decode them. Unfortunately, most of the support are for Windows 10, not 8.1.

      People have begun ignoring them because they are incredibly restrictive if you're an enthusiast. For example, if you want a 4k blue ray drive, which any enthusiast will want. You have to buy a 7th Gen intel cpu because of some bullshit copy protection. And you are limited to a handful of softwares to run the uhd even if you have the drive, most of which are complete shit.
      Most people don't need a full on htpc, and the enthusiasts who do, would rather just buy a standalone drive to save the effort. It's just another example of disk copy protection killing the consumer to delay the piracy crack by another few months.
      By the way, the reason you want a uhd drive, is because blue ray disks have far greater image and audio quality than streamed service, most streamed services don't even properly support proper surround sound systems.

  • @Richard-je5vk

    A major problem with using intel CPU's is that the motherboards rarely support HDMI 2.0, including the one used above. Most B450 motherboards (and many A320) support HDMI 2.0 when using the Ryzen 3 2200G or Ryzen 5 2400G. Hence if 4k 60Hz viewing is a prerequisite, then AMD is really the only option (assuming you are using the iGPU).

    • @tim3172
      @tim3172 5 лет назад

      You say 'most' motherboards don't support HDMI 2.0.
      Can you link to an actual Intel motherboard that does support 2.0?
      I'm not trolling, just under the impression that literally no Intel Integrated graphics supports 2.0 (as evident by the 9900k/9700k listing only 1.4 support).
      I don't believe it's possible to have a motherboard support 2.0 if the HD 630 doesn't support it, but I'd like to be proven wrong.

    • @Richard-je5vk
      @Richard-je5vk 5 лет назад

      AFAIK only 3 Z370 motherboards support HDMI 2.0 via an onboard LSPCON.
      It is not native support but a port from the DisplayPort
      They are:
      Gigabyte Z370N ITX
      ASRock Fatal1ty Z370 Gaming-ITX/ac
      EVGA Z370 Classified K
      There may be more but these are the only ones I know about.
      The B450 AMD motherboards have native support via the VEGA iGPU itself. See:

That always scared me away from building a media machine. Instead for the last 5+ years I have run a WD Media player linked to a Synology NAS. I recently upgraded the WD Media player to a Nvidia Shield running Kodi and it works really well, no complex software config required. Hi Tech Deals! I have not been here for a long time and I see this channel is as good as always, or even better :)
    By the way, I see you have almost no mini ITX or micro ATX PC builds and those are pretty cool. Sometimes the smaller the better ;)

      Welcome back! :) I have the luxury of living in Texas, everything is big in Texas and I don't have space limits for PCs...
      That being said, a mini-ITX system is on the list of things to do. I have the parts for it, just need some time.

    Hello I want to build an htpc and am trying to decide between a 9600k and a 9700k. I want it to last for years and maybe sometimes use it for gaming when I don’t feel like getting non my pc. Which would you use for yourself please? Thanks.

      seeing that he rips (backups) his blu rays with makemkv i'd assume that he's using Plex to serve those files to anything over the network locally or over the web even.

    I'm thinking of a home theater pc in the future, it sounds interesting to have for a true cinema experience at home. Right now though, I'm looking to get a good Intel gaming pc that can handle current and future modern games (excluding FPS and high intensive gaming since I don't play those) like adventure and racing. Out of the games I have on the computer, I think Rise of the Tomb Raider is the most intensive game I have and it's not as intensive as FPS and some other intensive games. I would also like to get close if not to 5GHz speed as I do have a 360mm liquid cooler to put on the chip. Which chip would you recommend for a casual adventure and racing gamer that can record 1080p @144fps, 1440p and 4K @60fps? and would a RTX 2070 be plenty?

    Always wanted to do something like that. Great idea. I even made a presentation about this at my university class of IT once.
    I'd just put it in smaller horizontal case, which is very stylish. Not many drives would fit there, but who fills their hard drives with pirated series and movies these days anyway?
    I'd also do some rainmeter, object dock and icon packager magic to make TV screen look cool at my living room. Or even use dedicated Linux distro.

    Hi can you provide the links to the pre built PC.
    Will this "theater pc " work better than the streaming devices.
    I have a streamsmart box.
    They cost around 200-300 and only good for 1 TV . I like the networking function for all Tvs.

    The Fractal Arc Midi is $65 on Newegg, 8 x 3.5" drive cages (2.25 too) and 2 x 5.25 ODD with one convertible to 3.5 w/ included bracket plus 3 x 140mm fans that are pretty good and since they're 140's will spin slower than 120's.

    Nice video. I've been using PC as media player for many years now, It gives you so much more flexibility, not only watching series, movies, etc. but also streaming youtube, playing music. Currently I have an older ASUS ROG G20AJ with 16GB memory, i7-4790 which is also a quiet pc. But looking for an upgrade which also has 4K support and which also has enought power for rendering 4k drone video content. Is a setup like this suitable for that, or would you need more power for rendering 4k videos?

    Good HTPC build if you don't want to watch 4k60Hz. As far as I know, Intel doesn't support HDMI 2.0 on the iGPU. The AMD 2200G and 2400G support HDMI 2.0 on most B series boards. I use and Asrock B450 mini ITX for my HTPC with a 2400G ( I do lite gaming on that TV as well, like SC2 and Diablo III ). It all depends, but I think the only reason to get the Intel CPU is when you plan to rip blue rays, all other cases the AMD APU are far superior. I use the HTPC on a 75" 4k60Hz TV. The Intel can only drive 4k 30Hz.
