We've been watching our VHS of "KiKi" since 1990. How disappointing that they remastered the DVDs without these tracks, and without so many great lines of dialogue from the late Phil Hartman. I've been obsessed with the songs in the opening and closing credits and could never find them. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
The version you speak of was made to be much closer to the original Japanese. I agree though in that I prefer the older English version (I have the DVD and it still has the songs and his lines)
The only thing they needed to remove was Kiki being able to understand Jiji again, because it kinda ruined her character arc, but the other things they definitely should have kept.
The English versions of the older Ghibli movies are definitely nostalgic to me, so I’m biased, but this song is and continues to be iconic. While I’m fond of the original song now, and it’s arguably more suited for the mid-20th century setting of the film, I always looked forward to this scene because of how much I loved this song.
I got into the Ghibli movies in college, watching them all for the first time. I got to this one around my senior graduation when I was facing my future and feeling overwhelmed. The opening to this movie with her saying goodbye to her family and flying off really hit me at the time. I started crying, feeling connected to the lyrics, and I kinda felt embarrassed as a 22 year old guy being moved by a little girl's journey, but there I was crying. This song will always have a special place in my heart for that reason.
It's so funny that you say this! I haven't seen Kiki's Delivery Service since I was a teen (now in my early 30's) and I saw it on Hbomax and popped it on. Geez, I started crying immediately when she was saying goodbye to her family...I felt a little embarrassed to be crying from a kid's movie I've already seen, but it really hits different when you're older. Glad I'm not the only one :)
The very first Ghibli film I ever watched. I remember that Saturday. They were set to air Pokemon 2000. Instead, I got Kiki's Delivery Service. What a great movie 🙂
They did it because all the anime purists bitched and whined that "its different from the original Japanese version". Nothing worse than a bunch of self-righteous, puritanical anime folks who cant let eothers enjoy something
Yes. Whenever my brother and I come home, we always look around and go, "A chair!! It's MINE!!" and we love the, "Howl, do you want some milk?" scene. Too funny.
I remember watching this when I was little, and now that I've finished college and relocated to a new city, I feel like Kiki in some ways. I've thought of this movie a few times, because she also relocated to a new city and tried to find her place in it.
I watched this movie first when I was 5 years old and immediately knew that Kiki was my role model and that I wanted to be exactly like her. In all honesty I’m probably more like her artist friend Úrsula but nethertheless the film remains one of my all time favourites, and definitely the most influential one
Just watched this on videocassette and i can't help but think of what a good child hood i had. This is still such a good movie with a great message of believing in yourself and never giving up on your dreams

You have to find one that was made before 2010. In 2010 they rereleased a version of the movie that is more true to the japanese version in which the original japanese songs are kept and many of Jiji's lines are edited out.
Just rewatched this movie for the first time in like 15 years or so when I was a child. It was a great experience, but I was disappointed that Disney took this song out.
Been wanting to rewatch the OG VHS version recently but hate how every website I visited always have the "new" version of kiki, no matter how hard I try to find the original VHS english movie version there's always the new versions and I've given up searching to watch the VHS dub. I have considered about buying the OG VHS eng dub but at the moment I'm still saving up so maybe sometime in the near future. Idk it just really sucks that the VHS movie can't be found anywhere anymore, heck no one even uploaded it on the torrent website I always rely on. And yeah I get that the newer versions try to stay as closely accurate to the original Japanese version but man I'm just not fond of it, I grew up watching Kiki on the VHS tapes and that version stay stuck to me as a child heavily back then. I would rewatch it over and over as a kid to the point I ended up remembering a lot of lines, scenes, some additional soundtrack they've thrown in, heck even jiji's sarcastic lines and I've enjoyed them all. I really heavily regretted we threw out all of our VHS tapes somewhere in the 2010s because our family wasn't using them anymore, I wish I could go back in time and stop my parents from doing so. It just really sucks the OG VHS version has became lost media over time, if only I could rewatch it to relive my childhood memories :/ It's a shame I can't revisit to watch it anymore all thanks to the new versions keeps on being everywhere on all of the websites I've visited 🙄
This will forever and always be my favorite movie and song. I can't tell you how many times I used to watch this. It was my first anima like movie or show. I think I'm going to watch this tomorrow. :) I dont know where I would be without this movie. I remeber "flying" on a broomstick and singing this song. thank you so much for uploading this! It means so much to me!
Thank you SO much for this!!! I searched FOREVER for this song and couldn't find it anywhere!!! Kiki was my favorite movie and this was my favorite song as well. Thank you SOOO much for uploading this!! This brings back such childhood memories!!! Thank You!!!!!
Yep, Disney (and more importantly, John Lasseter) definitely deserves props for introducing many of us to these amazing films. If it wasn't for them we may not even have them. Although I would love it if they stopped being so hesitant and release Only Yesterday and Ocean Waves in the west already.
I remember how angry I was when I rented Kiki’s Delivery Service on DVD at Blockbuster and it played this weird piano Japanese song instead, which did not fit the scenery or capture the sense of adventure of Kiki leaving home. I went to the trouble of buying the 2003 American DVD. Cost near one-hundred dollars. Worth it!
This my favorite song along with I'm Gonna Fly also from Kiki's Delivery Service. My favorite artist is Sydney Forest My favorite Movie is Kiki's Delivery Service So thanks so much for making this video! =)
The Yumi Arai songs are fantastic. I'm definitely not gonna complain at having a release with those in them. I did find an old DVD copy though recently and it was fun to hear the Sydney Forest songs again in the movie.
Wish they would’ve just cut the added dialogue and kept the English songs, helps the audience connect with the character development, plus all the memories this brings back for me and others who grew up on it
I think you actually mean “I’m Gonna Fly”, BTW, not just “Soaring”. You can only hear those songs in these versions: 1998 VHS/LD (stands for LaserDisc; if you don’t know what that is, just Google it) 2003 DVD/VHS Starting with the 2010 DVD releases, the film was reverted back to its original Japanese music, meaning that the English songs performed by Sydney Forest, along with the insert background music that was added in the 1997/‘98 English dub, has been removed completely.
Hi there!, maybe I'm late to this, however this song has had a great impact on my life. I love the simplicity of studio Ghibli songs, the magic in every lyric, it permits the mind to wonder to places yet explored by many of us. In a few months, I'm taking off in a sailboat to the south seas. I'm free as a bird, lost in the stars and waving down to Earth, don't know where I'm going to land, but you got to wobble before you stand. Anyway, those lyrics aside, I'm taking off with nothing more than my beautiful cat and myself on a Cheoy Lee 33! These past months I've spent a great amount of expenses preparing my boat for the south seas. My time in the navy has helped prepare me, however, a submariner only knows so much. many concepts of surface sailing are rather trivial. But I'll say, if Tania Aebi can do it, well so can I. I did my research, and when Sydney Forest sung this song, she was 27. God, even after all my years in, I'm only 24. That alone gives me promise that even at my age, I'm not too old to soar.
I just watched this movie for the first time and i loved the soundtrack. Im 15 and have been meaning to watch this yeare ago. Makes me wish i watched it sooner
I just started watching Kiki on Max and I grew up watching this VHS repeatedly in a single day I’d play it and rewind it like 5 times it was a miracle it didn’t break and when this song didn’t play I was SO CONFUSED I thought I was going insane. Im sad they took this out it’s actually engrained into my childhood
Every time I hear this song, it makes me want to go flying through the skies in that plane Tombo had at the end of the movie :) oh the delicious memories...
I love this movie it's one of my all time faves...last time I watched this movie I was abt 5 or 6 yes old lol until my brothers and sisters and myself played it so much it broke...come to think of it I dnt think I have seen a VCR tape since then either lol
I think there is a place for both version of the Disney Dub of Kiki's. Yes, the version widely available today is more accurate to Miyazaki's original vision, but I think I speak for a lot of people when I say the Disney Dub 1.0 is nostalgic and we find enjoyment in that. Honestly, if I wanted to see the more accurate version I'd probably watch the Sub'd version because honestly the Dub without this song and some of Phil Hartman's lines just feels off. But at the same time, for others, having that version in English that's truer to the orignal film is good to have for people to enjoy.
I envy kids who grew up with this movie. I watched it for the first time when I was 30 years old in Japan. Now I'm smart enough to say it should be shown in schools.
I love this song and I love studio ghibli sorry if I spelled that wrong ^^ this was one of my fravorite movies they did but all time frav will always be spirited away and castle i the sky but this one may come over castle in the sky ahhhhh just lve this song so many memories come with it so glad u uploaded the full song!
I actually went to the effort of looking for the original 2002 DVD release of the film. Eventually I found a used copy for a good price on Ebay and it was in PERFECT condition. The original songs (the English ones not the Japanese) and dialogue was included just like the VHS one. So if you want the VHS version with the English songs look into the 2002 DVD and not the Blu ray combo set.
Lyrics: My heart is ready to beat I can feel the wind underneath my feet I'm gonna jump over the moon Hands in the air waving up like a balloon I'm free as a bird lost in the stars And waving down to earth Don't know where I'm gonna land But you gotta wobble before you stand I'm soaring all alone And on my own I'm soaring And I know my heart will lead me home Just look in my eyes Can't you see I'm not the same today I can see farther now Step from the edge I'm making my own way Don't know where I'm gonna land But you gotta wobble before you stand I'm soaring all alone and on my own I'm soaring and I know my heart will lead me home And I know that I am gonna touch the sky I'm soaring all alone and on my own I'm soaring and I know my heart will lead me home All alone and on my own Soaring all alone and on my own I'm soaring all alone and on my own I'm soaring all alone and on my own
I have both Kiki's Delivery Service & My Neighbor Totoro on the orginal NA release on LaserDisc. To this day this is how I watch them. Disney destroys everything good. Thank you Dad for looking out! ;)
Everlena Oliver Actually, Disney added this song and the other one in and added in the extra dialogue to the 1998/2003 version. Makes you look like a hypocrite. Or unless you’re talking about that earlier Streamline Pictures dub.
Same here! I'm subscribing! Love this song and anime moive. This moive was the one that made me love anime and it made me start watching anime that opened me up to so many anime movies and series. Well so did Spirited Away. And Totoro. I love anime! And the music of course. That's what brings the anime alive.
Grr Disney sucks so hard for taking out this song! I loved the vhs version. Almost all of the re-editing of the movie pissed me off. Especially the ending where Jiji doesn't talk again. I don't even want to go into how bad Totoro is. I hate disney and their epic fail.
MiddleEarthGirl I was just about to comment about the same thing. I just bought the dvd yesterday and I'm pissed because they took so much of the great stuff about the movie and removed it, including this song and "I'm gonna fly" at the end. Disney is shit.
Yeah I just bought the blu ray today and I'm pissed they removed this. I have the original DVD release from the early 2000s and it had this in it. I also noticed they removed some of the characters lines too. To be fair, on those parts, they weren't speaking in the original Japanese version which may explain that decision, but still. It kinda toys with my original memories of this film, which is my favorite Ghibli film.
Yeah. Growing up, I loved them & my family hated them. They called Miyazaki's films "creepy". To this day, I don't know what they find creepy about his films. I got more outta his films, than most of the Disney films I grew up with. But that's just me.
It's on the dvd from the early 2000's

You need to get the Disney version there’re around just rare hard to find
You are right, I think it should have kept all those lines from him, it made the movie worth watching. IMHO.
I'm 24 years old and I STILL love this song AND the movie, It brings back soooo many great memories.
Lizzy Keffer sane here! Wish they kept it instead of the Japanese version
How's 30?

I'm 24 now and my dad introduced this film to me on tape. I've loved it ever since and listening to these songs make me so emotional lmao.
I'm 35 and if anything I like it more than ever.

Im free as a bird lost in the stars

don't know where im gonna land
but you gotta wobble before you stand
Im soaring all alone
and on my own Im soaring
and I know my heart will lead me home
Just look in my eyes
cant you see Im not the same today
I can see farther now
step from the edge Im making my own way
dont know where Im gonna land
but you gotta wobble before you stand

A flood of memories comes over me with this song. God I love Kiki's Delivery Service.
Morals and life lessons! There are many of these in animated movies such as this, and these days, morals and life lessons are exactly what kids need.
I searched up this nostalgic song for the once in a lifetime moment of combining elytra and fireworks for the first time.
"Oh great now im suddenly the flight attendant."
SERIOUSLY. I say it out loud everytime, I can't find the original English dub anywhere.
I love Kiki's Delivery Service! It's my favorite Studio Ghibli movie of all time!

This song was made for Disney's Dub of this movie, so I don't know why they took their own song out.
Probably to appease the people who were so angry at the existence of the song being redone. And the extra lines.
Harry Humble/Infogrames Multimedia To be more faithful to the original Japanese version.
the japanese songs are great though

I love this song...oh who am I kidding!? I don't just this song but the whole movie in general!
***** agreed!!
Mermain123 Dito.
I envy kids who grew up with this movie. I watched it for the first time when I was 30 years old in Japan. Now I'm smart enough to say it should be shown in schools.
Ah the nostalgic how I missed you dearly TvT
"Gigi! Climb up and turn on the radio! I don't think I can handle it! Can you do it?"
My best first anime ever!
I’m so heartbroken that this song is so hard to find now…
Ahh..this brings back memories, like how I kept jumping off high places with a broom X3
I heard this song in the beggining of the movie and felt that it was gonan be a good movie. now ive finished it and it was great.
;D
Lyrics:
My heart is ready to beat
I can feel the wind underneath my feet
I'm gonna jump over the moon
Hands in the air waving up like a balloon
I'm free as a bird lost in the stars
And waving down to earth
Don't know where I'm gonna land
But you gotta wobble before you stand
I'm soaring all alone
And on my own I'm soaring
And I know my heart will lead me home
Just look in my eyes
Can't you see I'm not the same today
I can see farther now
Step from the edge I'm making my own way
Don't know where I'm gonna land
But you gotta wobble before you stand
I'm soaring all alone and on my own
I'm soaring and I know my heart will lead me home
And I know that I am gonna touch the sky
I'm soaring all alone and on my own
I'm soaring and I know my heart will lead me home
All alone and on my own
Soaring all alone and on my own
I'm soaring all alone and on my own
I'm soaring all alone and on my own
I have both Kiki's Delivery Service & My Neighbor Totoro on the orginal NA release on LaserDisc. To this day this is how I watch them. Disney destroys everything good. Thank you Dad for looking out! ;)
You are correct, Disney Corp destroys everything good. That they didn't make.
Kiki’s Delivery Service wasn’t released on Laserdisc in the states.
I'm watching this movie again; oh the nostalgia of it ^-^
90's Anime American Dubs FTW!
Glad I have the original on DVD.
DramaBabe18 Disney isn't shit but they royally fucked over this franchise that's for sure.
MiddleEarthGirl I just meant they were shit for messing it up.
MiddleEarthGirl Yeah. They did that on the Castle in the Sky dvd!
Omg, I've never heard the full version, Even without plane sounds, wow! xD
i love studio ghibli films!!!
Yeah. Growing up, I loved them & my family hated them. They called Miyazaki's films "creepy". To this day, I don't know what they find creepy about his films. I got more outta his films, than most of the Disney films I grew up with. But that's just me.
+BowditchXD maybe they only saw Mononoke that's the only one I saw as creepy at all.
L. T C.
ah no! princess mononoke is just beautiful! ^.^ x
I know it is just to parents it may come off as a bit creepy to some. I love Mononoke no question although my favorite is spirited away.
oh yeah, i know what you mean. ah phew! ;) i'm glad! I love spirited away so much! xx L. T C.
