These episodes keep getting harder and harder to edit 😭 There’s so much I want to keep in for all of them! This was another really good episode even though it made me angry lol I sure did ramble on for a while in this one though. What did you guys think of this one?

It's understandably frustrating to edit for a show like Buffy that revolves around dialogue, and contains a lot of subtle humor throughout the episode. You wanna keep that stuff in. Some advice: there are two episodes in the future that you should try to keep as much in as possible, copyright monsters be damned. They're "special" episodes, and you'll understand when you see them (they're in season 4, and season 6). Like I said, you'll know which ones I mean once you watch them.

At this point I feel sorry for Faith. No one is really guiding her. While Buffy has family, friends and Giles, Faith is left alone to manage with the slayer's burden. Another big mistake by the Council which never seems to worry much about what's going on in Sunnydale Hellmouth until it's too late. They did not bother to inform Giles when Kendra was called, nor now about Miss Post. And poor Giles knocked unconcious one more time: after vampires, zookeepers, Buffy, Angel, now Miss Post!

    • @torfinnzempel6123

Nit defending the Council, but to be fair regarding informing Giles of Kendra, they may not have known that Buffy came back to life. After all, a new Slayer is only called when the prior one dies, so they may have simply assumed she stayed dead. And Kendra's Watcher didn't seem to know that Buffy was alive, otherwise they would have told Kendra about Buffy.

      @Henrik_Holst 2 года назад

I'm with you that she should be younger (I mean the age difference between the real age of the actresses match the difference when they where called as Slayers so she should be aprox 16) but it seems like the writers played that she was older then Buffy. However it's not like Faith is without any funds, the motel where she stays costs $210 per week (when adjusted for inflation) and you would probably get quite a good flat for that kind of money in Sunnydale (we know that the house prices are low there due to the Hellmouth).

Gwendolyn Post was smart, start by undermining the current Watcher, then drive a wedge between Faith and the others, taking advantage of how the Scoobies aren't communicating and keeping secrets. I don't like the 'TV timing' of Xander seeing Buffy & Angel kiss, too easy.
In the end Mrs. Post was 'disarmed' by Buffy and got what she deserved but I wish Faith had finished her thought with Buffy at the end, she's feeling betrayed and alone, out of the loop. This isn't good, she's the ID girl, look at how she took off after Angel with no evidence. She's a weak link. She ought to be in school or working for her GED or even get a job to support herself. She alone all day with nothing to do but think.

he seemed to know of her, and the line that "they swear there was a memo" suggests that he should have known in advance if she was on the outs. so there was no reason to call the council about something he should have already known. if your uncle shows up, you don't call the rest of your family to double-check whether he's in good standing. if something had happened, you should already know.

Giles didn't come with written orders either. I just seems like that's the way things are done, so no reason for suspicion. She knew who Buffy, Faith and Giles all were and the circumstances of everything, which wouldn't just be common knowledge. It's one of those things you don't have any reason to doubt until something goes wrong. The things we take for granted of always doing to verify things, ONLY exist because of a previous problem that shows a need for it. Nobody having ever done this to the Watchers Council before doesn't give any reason to question.

Then sometime later your friend, returns to that relationship and has been keeping it a secret from everyone and you find out. Without knowing any context to their situation your immediate reaction maybe to protect your friend by any means possible? Xander hasn't seen Angel since he helped rescue Giles (who was being tortured) from Angel at the end of season 2? Does he make the correct choices to speak to Buffy first? No, he handles it awfully. But he's supposed to be around 17-18? and he's very immature and impulsive. His decision making is poor, but it only comes from a place of protecting his friends/Buffy not for any selfish reason. Vampires killed his best friend(pilot), he's entitled to dislike them. People will point at the fact he's jealous, but yet he didn't really show any jealousy with Scott Hope. As a viewer we've had time to see him come back and regain his mental state and care again for Buffy and be remorseful for what he did. For Xander there is none of that. Buffy not telling them can only make him feel uncertain and frightened. It sort of irritates me how much some people hate Xander.
He can be annoying, his insecurities, jealousy & idiocy are frustrating indeed but... (SERIOUS spoilers ahead. Do NOT read more unless you've seen it all before :P)
His peers have done arguable AND/or objectively worse things and have flaws just as deep but don't attract the same levels of hate.
The writers understand this. They have characters openly admit to their bs fairly often, but many many fans grow intense bias.
Buffy often lies to those she loves. Sometimes for no real reason. She has a superiority complex and feels guilty about it and THAT can make her behave even worse. She's used people, refused to "let people in," does NOT respect authority while complaining about responsibility AND has a meangirl streak (remember: "when she was bad"?) She often criticises others for faults she is also guilty of.
Willow is an addict who has often abused her friends (and their trust)
Giles has a shady past and goes through a mid life crisis.
All of them have either committed murder or made mistakes that lead to the death of innocents.
But "Xander is a bit possessive or even sexist sometimes" seems to be the justification. Willow ADMITS this fault (the jealousy part) herself when saying "I don't share my people well" which we can see MULTIPLE times from her jealousy over Xander, her dislike of Anya, her hiding (and later manipulation of) Tara.
I say this in full acknowledgement that Xander is my least favourite "scooby," and Willow my immediate and forever crush.
The only character who gets more hate for less reason is Riley, who people hate for being "boring" and for (essentially) not being Buffy's bitch (the man abandoned the institution that trained him to follow her. He always respected her and all of his insecurities were well founded on Buffy's distance and complete inability to show him the same respect. As Dawn said, she loves that he's "weak and kittenish" imagine if a male protagonist were to describe his girlfriend with EXACTLY the same words. Yeah. Now add in that male identity is OFTEN founded on "doing" it's way more undermining than anything Xander said to/about Anya, and everyone rightly recognises how shitty he was for that)

I'm just thankful Giles for his absolute badass moment in s6, otherwise he'd be in much the same boat, with his role and contribution often implied rather than shown (and so often overshadowed, obviously by design as it's a "coming of age" type story :P)

for better and for worse, xander is generally less impactful in both directions. when buffy is frustrating, it should be easy to temper that frustration with the knowledge of all that she deals with, the number of times she's saved _your_ life in particular _just this week_ alone, etc. characters with greater burdens and more hero moments get more leeway. xander rarely "earns" his misbehavior, and he's particularly obnoxious about it. if his contributions aren't a net positive, then it's natural for people to ask why in the hell he's there at all, and can't he just go somewhere else?
as for riley, different people dislike him for different reasons and i don't think it's helpful to overgeneralize. bangel shippers hate that he's not angel, but i was glad to see angel gone so that's not me. the biggest issue with riley is how he responds to his issues. he feels like he needs to be "more of a man" and keep up with buffy, and that's a fool's errand, and was even for angel. it is notable tho that angel has this same problem in _i will remember you_ -- he has the chance to have a life with buffy without the strength of being a vampire, and he ultimately chooses the strength over the life with buffy. of buffy's three main entanglements, only spike ever truly and consistently seems comfortable with the fact that buffy's the strong one in the relationship.

One thing to keep in mind, is that Giles was under enormous stress from Mrs Post, especially for his relationship with Buffy and his role as a Watcher. And then all of a sudden something of enormous consequence is thrust at him fragmenting the trust in the relationship he has with Buffy. He would be feeling that he was on the precipice of losing his role as Watcher, and then to find that Buffy kept Angel secret from him thus not trusting him would have been devastating. "You have no respect for me or the role I perform".
In regards to the group meeting, l I feel like it was an attempt at an intervention, in the way a group of friends may confront a friend who is having trouble with drugs. It is supposed to be confrontational and uncomfortable, but Xander messed it up by being way over emotional and aggressive (likely feeling guilt about the Willow thing contributed to that, also as you said his jealousy of Angel). Xander was right to go to Giles, it was a critical issue that had to be addressed immediately, but he was completely wrong in the meeting.

The point of presenting a dilemma is to make you think. Both sides of the issue have some validity, and both sides have drawbacks. It's perfectly okay to be divided, because it means you're considering both positions.
So you don't have to decide, and someone will disagree no matter what you do decide. Especially because this is, after all, fiction, which is the best way to hash out these moral and philosophical dilemmas.

While Xander was, and maybe still is into Buffy, his reason for not liking Angel isn't jealousy. It goes back to the very first episode "I don't like vampires". They killed his friend and to him it's black and white. Vampires are bad. He doesn't differentiate much with the having a soul. He hasn't really actively hated every other guy Buffy has dated or shown interest in. The frat guy yes, but all this time he's dislike Angel but not other guys shows it's not jealousy.

Warning: not coming for you but this will be a Xander reply. It's funny, the hostile group scenes where they disagree and argue are some of my favorite moments. Feels real. Let's be honest, the way Xander and Giles deliver their gut wrenching lines this ep makes for an interesting watch. If everyone was even keel like Willow there would be no internal conflict and make for a boring show. It's just nice to see someone speak with passion and gusto. Albeit sometimes misaligned it is not without truth. The internal struggle is just as appealing to watch for me as the external big bads.
It's also funny that you kept reassuring people that u don't hate Xander. Makes me wonder what's been going on your comment sections for the past few months. I admittedly stopped watching in that time because of a bad experience I had with another commenter for one of your eps. The person kind of incorrectly assumed that I was against the whole message of the show, i.e. female empowerment, because I critiqued buffy for letting her emotions skew her thinking. Forget what it was in regards to though. Pretty much everyone in this show falls victim to that, and that's a relatable human experience. I see the error in Xanders ways as much as I see in it in everyone. I think I see the hate for him tho from fans and REACT accordingly because fans try to act like he isn't a great and authentic character. But yeah, I'm back watching for now. Glad u are still watching and hopefully these comments don't put a damper on everything. Thinking about starting my own Angel reactions on YT.

This episode got to me, as well. Mainly because it has to alter Giles' personality/intellect to work. In the first episode (part 2), Buffy has to explain to Giles how vampires are "made". Upon reflection we see how ridiculous that was, and with _this_ episode Giles has a difficult time differentiating between _Angelus_ and _Angel,_ which is equally ridiculous.
It also bothers me that this is the _second_ time the group "gangs up" on Buffy, like they did in _Dead Man's Party_ ...which annoys me that they think they have some sort of "vote" on what the _Slayer_ is allowed to do or not do. There aren't a lot of instances of bad writing in _Buffy,_ but when there is it stands out all the more.

    • @MarkusR144
      @MarkusR144 2 года назад +1

I mean it's not really bad writing, they absolutely do think they have a vote on what Buffy does when they really don't, it's fairly common among humans. I think them ganging up on her again is mostly just about residual feelings they have after Buffy came back, I agree that it's basically part 2 of Dead Man's Party's gang up. All they needed was an excuse so they can feel "right" about dumping their feeling on her again.
I think the only ones that behaved "correctly" (whatever that means) are Willow and Oz. She wanted to keep emotions in check by doing "I statements" and Oz brought up them kissing when Buffy said that they weren't together "like that" anymore, which is a very reasonable thing to bring up at that point. Getting pissed about being spied on is also reasonable and saying that it was a mistake should've ended the argument. In a perfect world, Xander would've gone to Giles and told him, Giles would then pull Buffy aside to tell her in private that Xander saw Angel when he was out looking for the glove, followed him and saw him kissing Buffy. This really didn't need to be this whole emotional dumping of feelings, but that's what they wanted so that's what happened.
I think Giles was just mad that all this happened while he thought that the Watcher's are saying that he isn't doing his job right and they would not differentiate between Angel and Angelus, so he thought this was the right thing to do "as a Watcher". But really he was also just dumping his feelings on Buffy, he didn't do it when she came back because he was too happy, so he probably never really dealt with his negative feelings.
He didn't make any attempt to get the glove back from Angel and the way he's speaking shows that he trusts that once he figured out how to get rid or destroy the glove, Angel will do it or at least not try to stop it or use the glove himself. He wouldn't think that about Angelus, so I think he definitely understands that they are not the same. My guess is that he felt bad about what he said as soon as Buffy left.
btw in the Pilot, Giles just asked if he will "rise again" (which is a reasonable question), not how vampires are made. She said no and he asked if she can "be sure" and Buffy responds with how vampires are made (for the benefit of the audience).
But her answer doesn't actually answer the question, she can't be sure, she's basically just relying on her own statistics that they "mostly just kill you", but there's no way for her to know if he's been turned or not, unless she sees blood on his mouth (and even then it's not a guarantee). Lack of blood doesn't mean he couldn't have been turned. So technically Giles was right to ask if she can be sure, because she can't.
The bad writing is more about telling the audience the rules instead of answering a question and then just moving on with the conversation as if it was an actual answer. It feels like exposition shoehorned into dialogue (though at that point Giles was preparing to give his "You are the Slayer" speech, arguing with a teenager he doesn't know wasn't gonna help him at that point).

Tell Oz and Cordelia three episodes from now it isn't his business. He may not be their father, but he knows the dating situation and knowing the fallout that _will_ happen (they're cheating after all) in that situation requires a simple "Don't you think you owe it to Oz (or Cordelia - but knowing Giles talking to Xander would be like talking to a wall) to either let him down gently or stop what you are doing" type of line. Also, father and father figure in this instance has a blurry line considering the group's own father's.

Xander is the worst! Not only is he not able to word his emotions in a more sensitive way, he also constantly thinks he knows stuff better than the rest of the group. He didn´t tell Buffy what Willows plan was in episode 2/22 and manipulates Faith (by telling her just enough about Angel) in this one to make her kill him. He is mostly driven by jealousy and wants what he can´t have.
I don´t think we should excuse his actions by saying it´s typical for a teenage boy because all the other teenage characters are able to act in a pretty grown up way in this show. So why do hold Xander to a different standard??!

This is one of my least favorite episodes of the series.
Horrible that Xander runs to the Scoobies with a "look at what Buffy and Angel are doing" attitude without knowing any context of the situation of the kiss (it could have been a goodbye to the relationship for all he knew or a mistake made in the moment [as it actually was]) considering he is currently cheating with Willow on Cordelia. He shouldn't be judging anyway if he was a real friend and especially when cheating on his own relationship. Willow jumping into the "Intervention" was also just as wrong for the same reason aka considering her cheating on Oz with Xander.
I also think its dumb that Xander says he trusts Buffy at the episode's end. Everything he did in the episode spoke volumes to the contrary. I respect Cordelia for not showing tact and being truthful in the next line.

Those two things are nowhere near the same. Something goes bad with the Willow/Xander/Oz/Cordelia scenario, some people's feelings get hurt and in a few weeks everyone moves on. If something goes bad between Buffy and Angel, it's the end of the world and everyone dies

    • @Buffy8Fan

@@alexh8613 It isn't about comparing the scenarios outcomes. It is about Xander seeing Buffy doing something wrong in a relationship that shouldn't exist while he is doing something wrong in a relationship that shouldn't exist. Thus his hypocrisy. As for "If something goes bad between Buffy and Angel, it's the end of the world and everyone dies," that goes back to Xander not trusting Buffy. If he thinks the two of them would create the exact situation all over again when he didn't even stick around long enough to see the context, then he definitely shouldn't be telling Buffy he trusts her. He definitely doesn't. Buffy and Angel kissed many times before Angel lost his soul and Xander knows it. Xander chose to run to the Scoobies crying foul when he is fouling up his own relationship as well.
