X3: Albion Prelude Getting Started Guide (Part 1)

- The first in a series of tutorial videos demonstrating one way to get started in the X3: Albion Prelude universe.
Note: the audio mix is wonky in this first installment; apologies for that. It finally gets fixed around episode 3.
Why does every game tutorial on youtube have thundering music and a softly muttering narrator?
Chip Seraphine Because it was among the first videos I recorded. Move on to Part 3 where the audio levels are mixed properly.
+Chip Seraphine coz playing around with sound levels is too mainstream!
TheKadanz Damn straight -- this is _amateur hour_ over here, and that's how we like it!
@@willfe lmao man
You have your music way to loud and your mic is to silence
6 years late but thank you. Was so confused when this came out being new to the series. Appreciate you keeping these to dad friendly sized chunks..
I find that if you're patient, using the Mercury to run ore in Boron space can be extraordinarily lucrative and relatively safe early on. On a good run, you triple what you spend on the ore every time. There's quicker ways to earn credits, but I like the space-trucking aspect of the game. It's pretty damn relaxing.
This is one of the most relaxing on the safe routes
I just entered to X3 Community, everyone recommends your tutorials on the Internet. I was not suprised, great tutorial, still holds on 2020! Great job man!
Select the shipyard where the ship you want to sell is docked (dock it at a shipyard first if you haven't already). From the shipyard's menu, select "Trade". In the menu that appears, your ship should be listed (in green) twice -- once under the heading "repair" and once under the heading "sell". Click on (or use the arrow keys to highlight) your ship under the "sell" heading. Press the left or right arrow key (I forget which); press [ENTER] when the bottom bar "fills up". That should do it!
The audio issues aren't quite as bad as some indicate. Yes, I had to pay extra attention to hear what you were saying, but it wasn't bad.
I got back into X3 after a loooong layoff, and realized I'd completely and totally forgotten how to play. This video helped out. Will probably watch a few others. Thanks!
Brilliant!! I have had the x series for years, raised on Elite, loved all the wing commander and privateer space games but have never known where to start on this. Finally have a pc which can do this justice and have found your guides easily the best online. Clear, concise and easy to follow. Big well done on this - will certainly be subscribing to your channel :)
Hey mate, I'm really glad you're doing those videos, they are super helpful. I probably wouldn't have picked this up if it wasn't for tutorials like that
that's just the first minute, cheers for this tutorial man, just bought the game and noticed its a typical space sim. not a lot of explanation. but things get clear thanks to this tutor :)
thanks for that tutorial man, i bought the x3 pack (AP and TC) a while back and never got into it too much, i've already learned a lot in this 1st video.
just picked up trhe x3 package on steam, and found this walkthrough. Thanks for it. Watched the first part - going to try that. I feel like I'm starting EVE again - with the what in heck did I get into overwhelmed feeling. Again - this is helping so thanks.
You can configure each turret's commands separately, and there's various options like "attack capital ships" and "attack shields only" that orders each turret to focus on something specific. You can also set all turrets on a ship to the *same* command and they'll all act accordingly, too. To aim for the big ships, set your turrets to attack capital ships. Remember though to set them back to normal (attack all enemies) once the big ships are gone, though, or they might sit and do nothing then :)
Thanks for posting this. Already a great starting point for this game. I have a lot of faith in X3, I just know it's a slow one and will take a while for me to properly get into it. So thank you for helping me understand it better!
Thanks for the videos mate. I keep trying the other starts because I feel this is a bit gamey but these really help to give a better understanding of game mechanics.
Kev, AcesHighProd, Damname: Yup, sorry for the screwup. The audio was poorly mixed on this first episode (and the second). It's drastically improved in episodes 3 and beyond.
ibessebi: Whenever you're looking at a ship externally (F1, F2, F3 keys), including yours, you can press the number pad keys ([2], [4], [6], [8], etc.) to shift the view around as you please. [5] Resets the view. Almost any keypress turns off SETA, but you can set up the camera then restart SETA yourself. It'll still work.
I just want to let new players know that the way Willfe is starting is a very difficult way to play the game. It is much easier to choose Humble Merchant and sell the Discovery INSTEAD OF the Mercury. Yes the Mercury is a slower ship, but it has one huge advantage over the Discovery - it can carry cargo.
That means that you can use the proceeds from selling the Discovery to buy/sell cargo at various stations and your path to riches will be much shorter. (Continued in next comment)
4. Perhaps accept a transport ship if offered for sale, to show how to move up to larger ships without having to save a small fortune (e.g., I got an XL Demeter for some 200k credits that can hold a crap-ton of cargo).
Maybe mix in some cargo transport missions along the way and that would be a good non-frustrating tutorial series that Egosoft should have included with the game to begin with.
I don't sell the mercury, and instead use the disco for Fuel runs while resting in the mercury. The patrol ships tend to not scan your drone ships for illegal goods. You do need the trading system extension for this however. After you got some coin, swap to your disco and take your mercury to ore belt. The first ship I buy is the Kestrel.
Thanks for the video. I really wouldn't have had a clue where to start!
Cheers mate its really helpful to have vids like this, I hear the game is very good. The first thing I thought is that its not really that user friendly.
You're welcome! Glad you're enjoying the videos so far :)
I watched this entire tutorial 2 times already, and I still love it, you explain things very well, and it's fun to just watch you play. The 3.0 update is out, are you going to play it?
Thanks for the guide, but you miss out some key steps for newbies. I guess you're expecting people to have played an X3 game before and that's fine... but i find myself not knowing how you did half the stuff you did.
Yeah, you're right. The series also turned more into a Let's Play than a guide later on, as well. The audio's screwed up in the first two parts of the guide too :)
It's tempting to go back and spend some time to do a proper guide -- identify the basics of the game, plan how to show how to do everything, actually write a script for it, rig up scenarios ahead of time to demonstrate things without lots of waiting, etc.
It's a matter of finding the time, I suppose :)
If you did that I'd appreciate it. I'm still getting to grips with the game and it's quite frustrating at times.
Understandable. It's a huge game, and it takes a _lot_ of patience and practice to really get into it.
I'll try to set some time aside this weekend and next week to get started on this. It's been awhile since I've visited the X3:AP universe anyway, and I kinda miss it ;)
Did this ever happen?
What a soothing pleasant voice.
If you want my opinion, you are very good at teaching the game concepts (if a little too fast at times with the keyboard for us to read what just happened :) ). It would be a great service to X3: AP if you did do a reboot starting with the Mercury instead of the discoverer and went about the game from a true "Humble Trader" perspective. Perhaps, doing so with a logical order of:
1. Sell the Discovery
2. Upgrade basic engine/rudder via optimization.
3. Do some trading to build credits.
If you start as Argon Peacekeeper you will start in Argon Sector M148. Make your way slowly past all war sectors, head west up through PTNI Headquarters and find your way into Teladi space. Now fly around in border sectors and look for Dukes Dangerous Transporters. These are pirate transporters so you can take them out but first comm them telling them to surrender. If a pilot is Boron guy he will tell you to go drown yourself but he will bail out of his ship before anyone else. So just open your fire as you approach him from the front. Hes gotta a turret on the back so watch your shields. When he bails claim the ship and sell it. In about few hours of play you can claim ton of them and sell them for good proffitss. My first one was worth half a million. This way you get some easy action if you new to the game, good amount of credits, your Teladi rep will go up and you will have time to work out how things work.
Make sure you're not *in* the ship you're trying to sell. Dock another ship (that you want to *keep* at the same shipyard where the ship you want to *sell* is already docked), transfer into that ship, *then* try to sell the original ship.
Turns out merchants don't want to buy *pilots* as much as they want to buy just the ships ;)
I saw the 3.0 announcement for X3AP, and I'm definitely interested in playing it. I might actually do another series just for the 3.0 stuff (the real in-game plots), because it looks like they really went nuts adding new content to the game.
The game is a bit intimidating to start, but this guide is helping me begin my domination of the galaxy. Def worth the humble bundle price
This is SUCH a great tutorial, dude! Endless thanks to you.
You've just earned yourself a new subscriber :].
Yeah .... still I try to do that fly to station without the autopilot while I entertain my self making profit at the stock exchange
but today when I closed the panel I saw the station at 100 m almost die jez ... luckily I had a docking comp. saved my life a couple of times
cheers mate !
@willfe It was only an issue at the start of the video. Great video, thank you for the video. I played X3:R a lot, but had a nightmare of a time getting started in AP.
Playing the way Willfe plays will lead to much frustration, as Willfe demonstrates in parts 1-5 and a very slow and frustrating start. Trading your way to say 500-600k credits takes much less time.
Now, I want to thank Willfe for the series. He does an awesome and entertaining job of introducing new players to the game itself. As a new player to AP, I have benefitted tremendously from watching these videos. However, the path presented of fighting your way to riches is very slow and frustrating.
Add to the above the acquisition of important systems and software at various parts of the tutorial (e.g., Duplex scanner ASAP, Triplex as soon as a sector that has it for sale is explored) and you're set.
As things stand now, people are going to watch episodes 1-5 and give up on this game, thinking that it's just too frustrating. I mean the dogfights are cool, but several hours into the game (i.e., by the start of Ep. 6) there is very little progress except for maybe sector exploration.
New sub:
Thank you Sir, I have purchased all the X games and NEVER played more that 20-30m mins of the games...till NOW. Because of your tutorials I love prelude. I have been playing for 4 hours, YEAH! question does it make much sense to play Reunion? any how thank you so much for these.
Yeah, the same happened to me. It was a great surprise :) Good job, Egosoft!
It's in the gameplay options menu in the bottom-right corner during gameplay; you can set it from between (I think) as slow as 200% to up to 1,000% (where I keep it set).
By default that's bound to the number pad -- 4 and 6 pan left and right, 2 and 8 pan up and down. 5 resets.
Sorry to hear about Hulk, it is a ruthless game. The more you have the more you stand to lose, and bigger target you are. Never fly what you can't afford to lose, as they say. It is heavy PvP but you can just stay out of nulsec, and play it smart to avoid that aspect if you don't enjoy it, there is many other ways to progress in the game. It is one of them, you either like it, or don't, hope you are enjoying other games at least.
Simply taking a moment to say thanks!
Great video, very helpful.
But a side note, crank up the volume on your voice and crank DOWN the in game music, which isnt necessary.
When I started playing, my stupid AI Discovery pilot actually managed to get himself destroyed following my Mercury. So, another piece of advice is to sell the Discovery as fast as possible after starting, so as to avoid getting it damaged/destroyed by too much travel following you.
After you sell the Discovery, be sure to upgrade speed/rudder on the mercury so it's less of a slow dog and more of a capable trading ship.
Thanks so much for this video. this is really going to help me when I play again. :)
Great videos man, very helpful to a scrub like myself.
I'll gladly watch the new series and offer constructive comments.
Loved it! Nice job!
Yeah, sorry about the volume levels in the first episode. It improves in subsequent episodes. Glad you enjoyed this one despite the screwup :)
Thanks! Glad you enjoy them!
Thank you so much! you really made this game playable!
Thank you for taking the time to make these vids but without knowing what key you're pressing to invoke a command, such as the exterior shot of your freighter, it's very difficult to follow. Perhaps you'll have time eventually to edit in pop ups that reflect what you're pushing?
On a more serious note, try to keep the episodes to under a half-hour. Otherwise we're stuck with only 480p versions and it's very hard to read the text on those - 1080p all the way... I love playing your parts on a big-screen TV, in fact.
Great vid! Really enjoyed it. However, I have one question. I am an extreme noob at this game (just started), and I know how to get into external view for the ship, but how do you rotate the camera, to see the side of the ship. When I press f2 it just shows me the front and back. Both the arrow keys and wasd keys are used for turning so how do you? (I'm sure it's right under my nose but i just can't find it!)
Thanks!
Single player only. Fans have clamored for years for an online/multiplayer version, but alas, it is not (yet) meant to be.
Sorry about that; the mixing was a bit bad on the first episode. It's improved in subsequent episodes, though.
Yeah, I felt really REALLY bad for you by the end of part 5 (I call them episodes). If that happened to me, some piece of innocent hardware laying around me would have been seriously damaged or destroyed :) . I don't understand why they can't get simple auto-pilot dock with a station to work every time, especially with the way things stood at the end of part 5. I mean all they need to do is have a wider approach arc to the approach lights. Instead, the AP gets ridiculously close to the station.
Aye, very true, in the first couple of episodes, the audio's wonky. It clears up by the third installment (if memory serves).
I can cope with some levels of broken grammar and poor spelling, especially when it's clear the writer doesn't speak English natively, but I had to draw the line somewhere :)
thank you for answer. But even sandbox games have some sort of goal. What should i do? Build a fleet and destroy something? You talked about story missions. Where can i get them?
one tip: Never, i said: Never stop in front of the gate =/
Hey man, thx for this videos, i really don't know how to play any games like this.
I'm only a minute in and its not too bad yet, but it might be a good idea to subtitle the video with annotations for those who do have trouble.
Really wish this game could have better interface for controlling multiple ships, or a control system like the star wolves series.
Yup. The audio mix was horrible in this first episode. It gets better later on.
You should lover your game volume since its a Tutorial/Guide and its not the game volume we want to hear, taking that in considderation you need to Crank up the microfone output
Oh I know ... it was just the misspelling, grammar, SMS speak, etc. that bugged me :)
If memory serves, this video was the first installment of my first series of X3AP videos, and I really did bork up the audio mix. It improves starting w/episode 3 (when I realized the problem), though.
I've since replaced pretty much the whole "stack" as far as video production goes, so the audio levels aren't a problem anymore in newer videos.
This would be great!
Hey man, you are cool! Thanks!
Totally worth the humble bundle price.
At 4:19, does anyone else notice Crimea and the black sea near the top of the planet?
It's not earth haha
Its a sector Herron's Nebula which is far away from Earths sector.
I know it isn't Earth, obviously.
I meant this: gyazo.com/e3c7ef5d56dc9da0c0d6366f87c74ed4
Maybe they have used Earths textures. Who knows.
yep it is
Yup, sorry about that; it gets better starting in episode 3 or 4, if memory serves. That's about when I got the new mic. The new series (focusing on the XRM add-on) is also mixed better, too.
That would be awesome :D I would definitely watch it (since I never do the plots, bankrupt assassin for life ^^)
The very n00biest! :) I'm still failing miserably in my current series if you're at all interested in seeing me flail about with the X Rebalanced Mod!
Noticed you were panning the camera around. I searched through the controls but I haven't found a way to do that without moving my entire ship. How do you go about doing that? :o
ah ok I'll see what I can do, I have only been playing for a few weeks after watching some of your vids. got me a M7M Cobra was trying to figure out why the Flak guns wouldn't shoot at fighters, missiles or like everything lol..
That's just it though, I did avoid Nulsec. I lost my hulk in Highsec to a PC flying a fully geared T2 fighter. (Can flipper)
Will this guide be specifically for Humble Merchant or will it apply to all games? I've put about 6 hours into an Anonymous Argon game and I don't feel like I've really progressed much.
cloud4an This series focused on the Humble Merchant start. Note that it slowly turns into more of a let's play as it progresses further, but it's still pretty informative.
William Ferrell Alright, maybe I should start a new game where I actually know what I'm doing :P
Thanks!
Just click on yours docked ships in ship yard and you can buy things from equipment dock )
How did you turn the view of the ship (2:20) and how does the SETA continue even if you are turning?
this game seems awesome... not sure if I want to invest the time in it though. :/ seems like it takes forever.
thank you
I can't hear anything but the loud music :(
whats the button to sell a ship?
There's someone talking behind the music..!
Hehehe. Glad someone noticed ;)
Hey Will, how in the heck do you get the your AI to fire They're Gun turrets at enemies on bigger ships?
How much different is this from Terran Conflict? Since AP is just an expansion of TC I assume that its very similar. Am I right?
And of course youtube managed to put all my comments into a list, instead of nicely threading them with the Uploader Comments to which I actually replied, above.
I'm sorry bro but lower the music I can't hear you
Yeah, sorry about that. This was one of the first gameplay videos I recorded for RUclips, and I completely biffed the audio mix. This video and Part 2 are the only two with this problem -- I finally noticed the issue before recording the rest.
Ahhm... Stupid question, but how do I sell? Which button is it? Enter doesn't seem to work (I am using keyboard and mouse).
Check out Star Citizen. It's a ways off but looking to be a really promising space flight sim. It's got mmo elements, and singleplayer as well.
1st fucking rule is to turn the in-game music off you might get more people watching your vids rather than leaving after 10 seconds, nothin to do with wonky audio
Are you playing with a joystick? controller? or just mouse/keyboard?
leftjabrighthook Just keyboard & mouse.
I am new to X3AP and I don't even know how to change the camera like that. HELP!
k, its really the first bit thats intolerable. Thanks for response
im on a lap top vol cranked ans cannot hear ya at all.
This video was very helpful, but for some reason my ship doesn't come up for me to select it to sell it. Tips?
Sorry for the necroposting but I have the same problem, please help
I bought x3 gold pack on steam. Witch one should i start with? Also i have no idea what this game is about or what i should do
how do you rotate your camera around the ship
Try EVE if looking for the best Space MMO
Star Citizen will hopefully fill that gap.
One thing I noticed while playing this for the first time not long ago is that you *can't* do the flight school if you start as a merchant.
I don't know if this is a bug unique just to my game or whatever, but you have no guns on either of your ships, and the flight school mission requires you to shoot some crates.
Oh, weird. I suppose a workaround is to equip your Discoverer with a cheap gun, but of course by the time you're able to do that, you don't really need the flight school missions anymore :)
