      I know this video is a few years old but I needed this now. I’m a wanna be wedding photographer and always compare myself to others and constantly think my work isn’t good enough even though I’m sure for the little I charge it’s way more than enough.
      Thanks

    In a world where Instagram is the rule and where people are all making the same picture to show that « they where there », your video is as fresh as a good cold beer. Thanks for this great an eye opening message. Continue the good work.

    Great talk. I also think it's important to be cautious of the way we critique the work of other photographers. More often than not our criticisms are based on the way we shoot or how we would approach capturing a particular scene. It's something I've become increasingly aware of. Critical feedback is essential, but everyone has a unique perspective on seeing the world. We don't want to silence their creative voice with our own.

    • @TheMonochromeMemoirs

      Totally agree. Everyone has a different perspective and what one person likes may not be what the next person does. Always great to hear your input brother!

    I really appreciate this video. I was just scrolling on Instagram and seeing photos that people posted who have spent wayyyy less time practicing their craft but somehow look better than mine. I personally study film at school and want to become a DP but photography is close enough to get me frustrated when I compare myself to others.
    I struggle finding inspiration or creativity and often get too overwhelmed by trying to think of every way to improve something narratively which leads to me not doing the project at all.
    I think so much of what you said was what I needed to hear. Thank you!

    Been wanting to get into photography for a while, trying to pick which brand I buy into, I've been wanting to like the Z6 for the weather sealing and ergonomics, but I haven't been able to find anyone talking about anything but Sony. Really happy I've stumbled across your channel, love the honest and open discussions in each video. Thank you, my friend!

    This was great man, I just had a meeting with my team to talk about this kind of stuff but you just ruined my whole talk about how everyone I watched had a style. We tried to come up with what we should shoot like as a whole to have all our shots look similar but... Maybe that's now how we should do things. Maybe, instead, I should have 3 different eyes be exactly that. 3 unique, individual eyes. Super inspiring man. Keep it up. I'll take some seconds haha

You touched on so many things I have personally struggled with in my own work when trying to hard to be unique and develop a style to set my work apart from others instead of letting it happen naturally. Thanks for the inspiration and I will try for sure to just get creative and find what I love and inspires me.

    such good insight man. this type of thinking is holding many creative types back who are just starting out. this affirms what your real inner voice is telling you but somewhere in between things get complicated. it should just be a one-track mind SHOOT > EDIT > PUBLISH > REPEAT!

      @@TheMonochromeMemoirs man, totally.m i think when you're paying attention it comes easy, like many great photographers say its that moment of magic when you see that shot, but your intuition tells you when to click :)

  • @gregwaugh8069

    A friend of mine and I shot the same wedding and both came up with very different looks and "style", he tends to be under exposed and has a stock look and I tend to over expose and find the emotion between the moments. I hunt for the shot through the lens and will easily shoot 2500 hundred shots at a wedding and he shoots a quarter of that and is more "picky" I document every thing and he is more choosy. So many variables that I doubt it possible to ever shoot the same.

    • @TheMonochromeMemoirs
      @TheMonochromeMemoirs  5 лет назад +1

      There really are so many variables! I think if everyone just really let themselves shoot what they thought was interesting instead of what they think people would want to see we would have many more unique portfolios across this field. Great to hear from you Greg

  • @LMoProVisualComm
    @LMoProVisualComm 5 лет назад +1

    GOOD STUFF: I've worked in creative for over 30 years now. mainly Brand Identity, Graphic Design,Photography and Creative Content. it is sad that some photographers think they own the camera and that no one else in the world can pickup a camera and shoot... I started shooting again a few years ago after a 10 year layoff and I personally don't care about what other photogs do that don't want to share the creative experience... many of them talk like designers but they can't seem to explain their work... there's an old saying " IF YOU CAN'T EXPLAIN IT, YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING IT"
    I argue that you should create a limitation when you first start. it's not so much a style as it is perfecting a segment of the marketplace.... I'll stop there...

    • @TheMonochromeMemoirs
      @TheMonochromeMemoirs  5 лет назад +1

      Really love this comment. You’re so right it totally baffles me how some photographers think they are the second coming of Christ because they shoot photos, the ego aspect of this craft is so ridiculous with some people it’s hilarious. Anyone can do this if they have the passion but to really be great requires laser like attention to the type of work that interests you and an approach of humility. As Nietzsche said: “all great art is based in gratitude”
      So great to hear from you man!

  • @winslowmccurdy7217
    @winslowmccurdy7217 5 лет назад

    "Fuck all that, guys" I find that looking over other people's work is less often inspiring as it is creatively damaging. You oftentimes think shit I wish I could make photos like that, oh they're way better than I'll ever be or yeah I could've done way better how did *they* get that contract. I think photographers should examine the work of others within a certain mindset of trying to improve our own work, rather than being constantly bombarded with the "look at me!" social media blitz we receive daily. So yeah, fuck all that and just get out and shoot.

    I really like you videos but I have one proposal for improvement:
    It would be really nice if you could mark the time when you get to the point of the video.
    You tend to talk a lot at the beginning of your videos, about things that are kind of unrelated to the title of your video. This is entertaining and/or interesting in some situations, but can be somewhat irritating in others, especially when you watch youtube on a limited time budget (for example in a train on your daily commute to work). In such situations, I'd oftentimes prefer to skip the "intro".
