    In the swift, cynical Sweet Smell of Success, Burt Lancaster stars as the vicious Broadway gossip columnist J. J. Hunsecker, and Tony Curtis as Sidney Falco, the unprincipled press agent Hunsecker ropes into smearing the up-and-coming jazz musician romancing his beloved sister.

      It was of its time; it reflected events, attitudes, and practices before its time; it reminds us that we never truly addressed and corrected many things in the past so they wouldn't reoccur in our time.

    • @jamespfitz
      @jamespfitz Год назад +6

      It was 100 percent a reflection of its time. Everything from the noir cinematography to the casting to the script writing by a name-namer from the Un-American activities committee to the great big cars to men in overcoats and hats and women with tight curls, the music, the main conceit of an all-powerful newspaper columnist... This movie is the essence of 1958, and would be silly crap had it cums out 10 years later and 10 years after that and 10 years after that and 10 years after that.

    Burt Lancaster has become one of my favorite actors . I love this movie as well. I just watched the train . But I sometimes watch this movie when I get off work . The acting , the script, it's a great movie . Truly they don't make them like this anymore. And this quality of acting has long since went down the drain. This is quality acting and movie making . Keep the viewers captured with just the story in itself , love it

    One of the most vivid & powerful films to be released by Hollywood especially at the time. 1957 was also the year of 12 ANGRY MEN & both were not exactly embraced by filmgoers then. Too dark for many people who wanted popcorn movies & to forget about what the country had recently suffered through with characters like Joe McCarthy & Roy Cohn. Although being just peripherally related to the red scare of the time the character played by Lancaster was just as ruthless by using his influence to poison the minds of his readership. IMO, both he & Tony Curtis gave perhaps their greatest film performances here & nothing was softened in the script nor how the plot was concluded.

    Absolute shame that we can't get this movie as a download - I'm living on an island with a fixed income & don't have the ability to pay for the DVD or even a DVD player - if I could, I would buy this movie it in a heartbeat.

    • @IvoPoblete

      @@user-uq9sl5dg4h Yeah, I see your point.
      There are so many films like this of Mackendrick's I cannot get on digital. My digital catalogue is solely composed of purchases, by the way.
      I buy movies from RUclips since 2017 and I am somewhat certain they will always be there. So far no films have gone away, luckily.
      With Criterion's digital catalogue it is kind of a mixed bag because many movies I have added to my list have disappeared which is something I think would not happen if Criterion had the option of buying the digital version of a certain picture. I say mixed bag because on the plus side Criterion has made me discover a bunch of movies I would have never opened my eyes to.
      Anyway, so some titles Criterion removes I find and buy them from RUclips. The others which YT hasn't got I think eventually will have to be added to a newly created physical collection of my own as you have done from the start.

    Stupenda pellicola, certo non è chissà che cosa ma comunque è una godevole pellicola che parla di temi molto alti e complessi quali la crudeltà, l'avidità e la bramosia di potere dell'uomo, dei media di massa e di chi li controlla, quindi stupenda e stupenda per me come valutazione è 8.
