"I could see where she had clawed it, scrabbling, digging in the dirt. She had been alive when she hit the ground.""

@@PabloGonzalez-hv3td the plane suffered explosive decompression 6 miles up. This is a paragraph of info I found on the event from first responders and the investigation team: "The bomb caused the plane to decompress six miles above land. You cannot breathe at that height. Any passengers blown into the sky would have fallen unconscious.
It would have taken approximately two-and-a-half minutes to reach the ground. Within the first minute-and-a-half, they would have reached breathable air.
THE one minute of oxygen starvation was not enough to kill. So many regained consciousness before they hit the ground."

But, there are many once successful airlines that no longer exist, that I flew in back in the day (TWA, Eastern, etc). Airline travel today is a far cry from what it was in the 70's, 80's and even 90's. I flew Frankfurt-London with that plane 6 weeks prior of the incident (my first flight). You cannot imagine how old everything was. During taxi the flight attendants opened and closed the rear door several times to make sure it was tight (I was sitting in the last row exactly beside that door). Then we had to leave the runway again for one engine not being possible to start. After 45 minutes the captain announced to have to try another starting sequence of the engines. When that worked the captain said: "Don't worry. We'll make it to London and from there to Houston. And then the airline hopefully will discard that piece of scrap". When I heard from the bombing 6 weeks later and the first announcement "The rear door having been found in a distance of some miles away" I thought that "The piece of scrap" had disintegrated itself in the air.

Something thats worth noting is its been reported by first responders (residents of Lockerbie and the nearby area) and backed up by autopsies of the victims is that at least 2 people were reportedly found alive after the accident but died due to the Scottish elements (Probably a fatal dose of hypothermia and shock) A woman reported that she went to investigate a loud bang and saw in a field some debris, and what looked like a person crawling, she ran to get help but by the time paramedics and police got there the person was found elsewhere, his corpse was grabbing the grass. A coroner did a post mortem on the person (Who I believe was male) and found his only injury was a broken leg, but nothing that would be fatal. This does not mean this story is true as you should take it with a grain of salt, but it is likely several people in the forward part of the cabin did survive the impact, possibly by being ejected from the aircraft and somehow slowing their descent or by an unexplained miracle/ sheer luck like Vesna Vulović

There is eyewitness accounts that 2 or 3 people were alive after impact but died soon after. Rumours are that a few people said a few words to the locals that found them but died very quickly afterwards. The pathologist who done the post mortems stated that a few people had injuries that may have been compatible with life. An air hostess found next to the cockpit section was apparently still breathing when found and another passenger had clumps of mud and grass in their hands which were firmly clamped when found. That person was alive after impact.

If it left on time, the plane would have blown-up over the ocean, making retrieving all that physical evidence (the radio, clothing, suitcase, etc.) probably impossible. If the plane was delayed even more, it's possible the plane would have exploded before leaving Heathrow. The casualty count would have been less, or possibly zero.

These are just little tidbits, but it was a myth the plane left late. It left on or close to its 6pm schedule. The 6:25pm take off is often cited as proof of late departure, but for this time in the evening, 25 minutes would be within normal taxi time. If it was a pressure based bomb, as most were, I'm guessing it would not have gone off before reaching a planned trigger altitude.

roachtoasties.......Please read the following extracts from my post above:
Immediately following the downing of Iran Air flight 655 by state-of-the-art US$3 billion Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes on 3 July 1988, the justifiably incensed Iranians ‘contracted’ the Ahmed Jibril-led PFLP-GC [Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine - General Command] to carry out revenge attacks on 5 American airplanes.
A payment of US$10 million was agreed with Jibril for the attacks*. [This action was code-named ‘Operation Intekam’ - which means ‘equal and just revenge’ in English]. The targets were to be on major American commercial airline operators with flights originating in Europe and to various destinations in the U.S. The Iranian's motivation was pure revenge and to fulfill the promise that the skies would "rain blood."
[*there is expository evidence of this ’contract’: As part of their surveillance, the Israeli intelligence service MOSSAD, allegedly intercepted phone calls from Ali Akbar Mohtashamipur [Ayatollah Mohtashemi], the Iranian Interior Minister in Tehran, to the chargé d'affaires at the Iranian embassy in Beirut. During their conversations Mohtashemi-Pur instructed the embassy to hand over the funds to Ahmed Jibril - and in a later call, to pass on congratulations to the PFLP-GC on the success of blowing up PanAm103].
The PFLP-GC's leading bomb-makers Ahmed Jibril, Abu Nidal and Marwen Khreesat - always preferred barometric [air pressure] timers which could be set to a specific altitude. This was usually around 30,000ft - the normal cruising altitude of commercial aircraft. The bomb onboard PanAm103 detonated at 31,000ft.
This documentary is utter nonsense and to claim that a bomb could be introduced onto an aircraft in Malta which would then end up on PanAm103 in London - having cleared THREE separate airport security checks [Malta, Frankfurt and Heathrow] is pure tosh.
Bomb-makers are not idiots. Their objectives are clear - to blow-up their 'target' and cause the maximum amount of death and carnage. So to use a conventional 'chronological' timed device [especially at not only the busiest time of year for air travel but during the most unpredictable weather conditions where it is highly probable that you would incur lengthy delays] is sheer lunacy.

Thank you for a very even handed account of events. I remember that night well. I was the on call surgeon in the second nearest hospital. We prepared the hospital for a major accident and even mobilised a medical team to go to the site. The wind locally was so bad that the helicopter sent to collect them struggled to land. In the end our services were not needed. A profoundly sad and shocking event.

When I start thinking about how rotten people are in this world, I remind myself about the people of Lockerbie. Their town had been destroyed. Their neighbors were killed or injured. They had to see the horror up close. And to that tragedy they responded amazingly.
They set their grief aside and opened their homes to grieving families of victims. And they made sure that any remains they found were treated with dignity and respect. They even fed and hoysed members of the media there covering the disaster. As is sometimes the case, the very worst of humanity brought out the best of humanity. It is an example we all should emulate. Maybe there would be less hate in the world if we did.

In the morning, just before the flight, the guy presents a cassette player with a night tune to the flight attendant as a souvenir. Then, a few moments later, the guy watches the news on TV, where they report that a tragedy has happened. The plane became the target of a terrorist attack, it crashed after the explosion of a planted bomb.
