    The "dynamically positional" Dzindzi-Indian Defense makes another appearance in my games, and my opponent responds with a high-quality gambit, 6.e4. I decline the pawn with 6...d6, but catman insists on offering up the e4-pawn.

    These standard videos are the most instructional chess content out there online. Thanks John!

    To those who gave this video a thumbs down: is it because of something in the video, or the fact that it's a Standard video?

      +John Bartholomew As they said before it might be bots, after a certain amount of thumbs up, some thumbs down is inevitable. Don't really know why to be honest. Nothing but good things to say about the video, John!

    Great Videos John!! Thanks for all this wonderful work. I am finding this content very useful to teach my 6 year old. This was a good example to show the difference between bad bishop and good Knight.

    Yeah, don't worry about thumbs down. There is nothing to dislike about this video. I absolutely loved watching white squirm after 19. Nxf5. Those poor bishops of his... it was like watching an anaconda squeeze the life out of her prey!

    Any time it is a "standard chess" day it is a good day! Still casting my vote for totally eliminating bullet in favor of another standard day, but I guess I'm in the minority for that one!

    • @JohnBartholomewChess
      @JohnBartholomewChess  9 лет назад +7

      +WeLearnChess Haha, yes - yes you are :) There might be a full-on riot if I eliminated bullet: they are my most popular "daily" videos by a good margin. I gotta say I do like making the Standard videos best, though. I have plenty of time to explain my thought process.

      +John Bartholomew from my point of view (~1300) your standard videos are irreplaceable! i mean, bullet and blitz look cool, but there is no time for someone of my level to understand what is happening. love hearing your thought process, especially in crazy opening lines!

    Interesting idea by your opponent. I rarely face this line, if I do with white, then I always take on f5. I think it's the best way to try to punish black for giving up the dark square bishop, it is the most challenging one, they really have to be accurate there. For example a line you mentioned there goes:
    7. exf5 Bxf5 8. Bd3 Bxd3 9. Qxd3. And this is excellent for white strategically speaking. Easy development, black can't prove much here, white only needs to be moderately careful about his weak queenside pawns but the weakness of black's dark squares offers white realy good chances. Especially since black is most likely going to castle queenside anyway. There is a small improvement in this line for black however if instead of 8... Bxd3 he goes 8... Qa5!? instead. Making white face a decision to either defend the c3 pawn passiveily or give up a tempo with playing 9. Qc2, after which black can take on d3, then play Nd7 and castle long. There is also another more tactical line that is considered sound for white though in that case: if 8...Qa5 there is 9. Bxf5!? Qxc3+ 10. Bd2 Qe5+ 11. Ne2 Qxf5 12. 0-0. Here white's plan is to occupy e6 with the Ne2-f4-e6 maneuver, and he also got rid of his weak c3 pawn. Black has an active queen as compensation although I think objectively speaking that's not going to be enough if white can keep his initiative unless black demonstrates machinelike defensive skills.
    I really enjoy these standard chess videos. Bullet chess is very entertaining, and it's really great to pick up tactical patterns, but these standard controls allow you to talk more about strategy and they're very instructional.

    I can watch these videos over and over ... this line I actually looked at with Lichess' Stockfish ... and laughed my head off: after Black's move 5: f5, they call it the "BEEFEATER VARIATION" !!! I will definitely look into that! ;O)

    Hey John, are there any good books on this opening? Going over the plans etc? I can't seem to find one. P.s. Been watching the channel since you began posting and still love the content.

      +Phil Dawson "Fundamental Chess Openings" (FCO) by van der Sterren is a good all-purpose opening resource. The best opening books tend to specialize in a certain opening, though. Thanks for watching, by the way - I appreciate it!

      +John Bartholomew thanks John, what I meant was is there any literature on the Dzindzi specifically sorry! (I think you thought I meant a general opening book). I have a copy of FCO but it glides over the Dzindzi not giving it that name but just describing it as a variation in the Modern (which I get) but FCO doesn't explain any plans as far as I can see. I guess I just find the Dzindzi a little mystifying as I see you and Rustimov use it from time to time but real info on it's moves and ideas beyond these videos. (Which have got me playing it). I'm not a huge fan of Roman Dzindzichashvili's videos which is probably the main source considering it's his pet, right?

    • @JohnBartholomewChess
      @JohnBartholomewChess  9 лет назад

      +Phil Dawson Oops, I missed that you were referring to the Dzindzi-Indian specifically :)
      There aren't too many books on the Dzindzi-Indian. This book by GM Henley is one of the few I'm aware of, but I can't vouch for it since I've never read it: www.amazon.com/Crushing-White-DZINDZI-Opening-Strategy/dp/1935979019 Outside of that, RUclips and my videos are probably your best source!

    Just curious... on move 8 you were debating on Qa5 and Qb6 and came to the conclusion that Qb6 was better compared to Qa5 because of the move Rb1, which was actually played in your game. You even said that you didn't want to play Qa5 because of the concession b6, which you also eventually played. Now my question...Going back to move 8 would you have rather played Qa5, assuming he plays Rb1 to follow and continue your game with queens on board?

    • @JohnBartholomewChess
      @JohnBartholomewChess  9 лет назад

      Hey, Josh - no, I'm happy with my decision to play 8...Qb6. The queen would be a little out of play on a5, and I think the best I could hope for is a later queen trade proposition anyway. As played, I don't believe the later ...b7-b6 is much of a concession; it was more of a reinforcing move.

  • @Welearnchess

    14...a5 was really instructional for me. I'm sure I would have been focusing on other parts of the board and would have allowed the bind. The position would be so much different after that. Very nice game!
