The Model Ship - Part 2056

- THIS IS NOT A TUTORIAL It is more of a daily personal diary, or perhaps a vlog, centered around the building of plastic model ships. Don’t be surprised when I unexpectedly, but usually just momentarily, get into something completely unrelated. I was big into building models years ago. Apparently I’m trying to bring back “the good old days” by building plastic model ships. Feel free to learn from my mistakes while I muddle through this.
Hi Ron, took some nice video of the soldering. You spoil us with all the good video
Thanks 👍
Nice job with the soldering today Ron. Have a great day. Jeff
Thanks Jeff👍
Nice job soldering today Ron. Always tedious to wire them up. Take care n see you tomorrow.
Thanks 👍
Hey Ron, if you Pre-tin both the wire and the LED strip before you make the connection, I think this may work better for you as you don't have to add any more flux, just a little bit of solder on the tip of the iron, hope this helps, See you tomorrow.
👍
Hi Ron, very good show tonight. 🍕👍🌟
Thanks Dan 👍
I've been offline for a while. I'm very happy to see that the project continues at full speed :)
Welcome back! 👍
Ron’ great video going to watch bike ride now. Happy modelling and pizza eating.
Thanks 👍
Greetings from misty Cushendun Ron.
Re: *"Cushendun"* just now looked around on Google Street View. Nice town! 👍
Ron: Greetings from hot hot hot northern California (Sacramento area) where today's afternoon temperature is 40.5C/105F and our sky's are smokey from a number of wildfires.
Love your build series and the ships you've made. But, why are you using solder flux? Some suggestions from a 78-year-old electronic hobbyist:
First, use rosin core solder (for electronics) which provides the necessary flux for your connections. No extra flux is needed. Here is a typical rosin core solder from Amazon which is listed as:
60/40 Tin Lead Solder Wire with Rosin core for Electrical Soldering 0.031 inch(0.8mm-50g)
The solder is available in lots of sizes and lengths.
Second, the copper wire you are using is typically called magnet wire and is insulated with lacquer. You need to scrape off the lacquer insulation on the wire before soldering, so you are soldering the LED leads to pure copper. I use a dull knife blade, placing the wire between the blade and my thumb (hence the need for a DULL blade). Pull the wire through a couple of times to remove the lacquer. To identify the positive and negative leads for the type of LEDs you are using, usually, if the LED has two leads, one lead longer than the other, the longer lead is the positive or + (also known as the anode) lead. When working with LEDs of this type, I typically bend the positive lead in some way so it's easy to identify, leaving the negative lead straight until final assembly.
Third, a suggestion about your battery pack. You can buy plastic snap-in/snap-out battery holders for a variety of battery sizes and voltages. They are wired internally for plus to minus connection so all you have to do is put in the batteries and connect the red/black output leads. They make changing out batteries quick and easy. Most have prewired red/black pig tail leads to connect to your circuit or alligator clips. Many have a built in On/Off switch as well. These holders come in sizes for D, C, AA, AAA, and 9V batteries. Here's a typical set available from Amazon listed as:
DIANN 8pcs AAA Battery Holder 2pcs AAA Battery Holder 1 Slot 2pcs 2 AAA Battery Holder 2pcs 3 AAA Battery Holder with Wires 2pcs 4 AAA Battery Holder Case
Hope this helps. Keep on building!

Thank you for the tips Art. 👍
Happy pizza day Ron! Good episode😊
🍕👍
New to the channel, fellow Winnipegger
Welcome aboard! 👍
Ron are you eating that pizza cold?, it looks cold. Always enjoy the close ups, even if they don't go to plan
Hi Jason,
I did heat up that pizza in my microwave oven. What has happened is that the cheese is drying out on the top and it was what you might say a little bit tough. The next pizza will be more conventional this was the last of the 8 slices that I had from the pizza I'd made a couple of months ago. I fell off my diet twice during that time so consequently the pizza went down just a little bit faster than it was supposed to, ha ha. 🍕😁
Happy pizza day 😎😎😎see you tomorrow
🍕😁👍
it's like to watch paint dry...
