I agree, don't use the "fill up" option, if in doubt, just use the largest kroner amount. Whatever you don't use will be credited back to your car within 24 hours.
Foreign gas stations can certainly be a bit daunting. We had some odd errors at N1 stations, and found that Apple Pay (or just contactless cards) worked without any issues at Orkan stations. They also seemed to be more fully in English, which was helpful. We always filled up - the ~$200 hold was just temporary, and not a problem. Lotus car rental also had an N1 discount -- 3 ISK which is about $0.02 per liter. In one of the cafes attached to an Orkan station, the fellow noted we could get an Orkan discount fob by emailing them, and that looks like it's 10 ISK. We'll probably do that on our next trip if we can figure out how to get the fob :). good stuff, and happy travels!
Thank you Matt & Rachel. Excellent overview. I'm not long back from 2 amazing weeks in Iceland. Camping & being in some more remote areas of the country I too was also concerned about refueling. Especially since in many locations the pumps were unattended. A couple of side notes to add. Yes, you need a credit card with a usable pin number. Quite often my American credit card pins didn't work. Thankfully my bank debit card did work. Need also to emphasize that your correct with not using the fill up option. Put in a set amount. You will only be charged for what you use. As a last resort if none of your plastic will work you can purchase prepaid fuel cards at most manned stations. My experience was good. Thanks for getting the information out there! Best.....Bob V
Hi Bob! Glad you had a great time in Iceland. Great point about the prepaid gas card! That’s definitely a good and reliable option. Even though we didn’t use one of those, we recommend that as well.
Thanks for the video. I felt silly in Iceland trying to guess how much I needed and never having a full tank but it seems like that is what you have to do.
I absolutely loved Iceland 🇮🇸. I couldn’t believe how expensive it was. I loved their hot chocolate and hot dogs. The place is majestic. Thank you for sharing 😊
It’s definitely pricier since they have to import everything. Hot chocolate?! We didn’t even think of getting that. Bet that was real yummy. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing, its very useful as I have been looking into this before my upcoming trip What do you mean by credit card with a pin? Mine does not have pin number, would I be able to bypass the pin number option?
As far as we know, you cannot use a credit card without a pin at unmanned gas stations. Credit cards are either set up with a pin/chip or a swipe/sign system. If your credit card doesn’t have a pin, you can still use it at manned gas stations where you can pay inside. Hope this helped clarify and happy travels!

Good to know! Thanks for all your great tips. We will definitely have to keep that in mind about Orkan if we ever visit again. ☺
Thank you for filming this video. It will go a long way in helping others who feel intimidated by the thought of using one! Cheers!
Thanks for the kind words! We are happy to help. ☺️

This is how we felt too. It’s such a different way of pumping gas/petrol than in the USA.
Thank you for an informative video. You have one of the only videos that actually help. Congratulations
Thanks so much! We are so glad it was able to help.

This is so 2009 RUclips with the helpful tutorials back in the day.... So only credit cards not Debit cards?
Yes, a credit card with a pin would be the easiest!
Thanks for sharing, its very useful as I have been looking into this before my upcoming trip

Thank you for the great tip. So if I will take 5000isk option, its eill not block big amount of money from my card, only 5k right?
Correct!
Another question: So we speak English. Which icon do you push on the screen that means English?
There are flag icons on the screen. You will select the UK flag for English! 🇬🇧
Thanks for the video. How do you get a receive?
It’s been awhile so we aren’t exactly sure. I actually don’t know if they print receipts.
So , if you select $5000 and you only put in $4500, does it still charge you the 5000 or 4500?
If it doesn't fill up to the full amount, it will put a 5000isk hold on your card.
It will put the hold for 5000 and then credit the unused amount back within a business day or so.
What is the red pump? Is that a totally different type of gas?
It’s 98 octane. It’s still gas, but it’s more expensive. Your car rental should tell you what type and color to get. Enjoy your trip if you go!
wow, 35 bucks and you got about 5 gallons.
Yep, gas is definitely pricey! We had a hybrid car though, and that really helped offset some gas costs.
if I select 5000 and use 3000, they will refund me after some days?
That’s correct! They will put a hold on your card for the 5,000 amount, but will only end up charging you the 3,000.
