I work in mental health and sincerely believe my Dad’s wife has PD and is a total hypochondriac. When she had her own child she was obsessed with taking him to the GP all the time too. I don’t believe she caused any symptoms of illness in her child but she has always had a heightened excitement when the opportunity to be in a medical setting whether for herself or others. To be honest she’s the reason I don’t have a relationship with my Dad any more because she’s unbearable.

Thank you for another very interesting analysis. Munchausen's By Proxy is such an odd behavior pattern. A weird mix of posturing good parenting while being totally insensitive to the child's suffering - that the parent is causing! I guess some narcissistic tendencies mixed with callousness mixed with a bit of greed for money and attention. I feel bad for Mr Godejohn and his family. I feel like he got caught up in a whirlwind that he wasn't equipped to deal with :-/

Gypsy SHOULD NOT be in prison. She spent her life as a prisoner to her mother. The level of abuse she was forced to endure is more than anyone should ever have to endure. Frankly I have deep sympathy for Gypsy.
This case makes me think of cases where a woman has been abused by her spouse/significant other and one day she has had enough and kills her abuser and yet the true victim is sentenced to life in prison or even death. Where is the justice???

      Hi Amy.
I can tell you feel passionate about this. As it happens there is a legal defence of 'battered woman syndrome' for exactly the scenario you're talking about.
I'm going to do a video on it one day when I have time. Very interesting topic.

I take comfort in the fact that Gypsy seems to quite like prison. She feels safe there. Although not ideal. She will get out soon. And hopefully in prison they will have given her some psychological help to deal with her past. Some eduction as well.
      She does have a future.
The boy who killed her mother was given a much harsher sentence. While I think it is sad. I do believe it's probably for the best in his case. He is proper screwed up apparently.

A couple of points that are often overlooked that I feel is important.
    1. Gypsy did run away before. Her mother found her and she had previously had Gypsy declared mentally incompetent due to supposedly low IQ. Therefore Gypsy felt that this would mean no one would ever believe her. When DeeDee brought her home after the run away attempt, she physically beat Gypsy, broke her laptop, threatened to break her fingers, and tied her to the bed several days. This response of course along with being declared mentally incompetent meant that Gypsy did not try to run away again.
    2. Gypsy was very heavily medicated all the time. Because of the unnecessary feeding tube Dee Dee could directly dose Gypsy and if Gypsy was asleep she would of course not have even been aware of it. All these medications would have affected Gypsy not only physically but her ability to think clearly. I think that is an extremely important consideration!
    3. I firmly believe that Dee Dee would have eventually killed Gypsy.
If Gypsy had to be prosecuted I believe that the charge should have been Justifiable Homicide for the reasons listed above plus all the years of medical abuse. Just my opinion.

Loved this one. This is such a bizarre case! I've watched a few different documentaries on it and have considered what I think Gypsy was responsible for. I think Gypsy was a desperate victim who learned that lies and deceit worked and were the normal way of manipulating things so she ultimately did what was natural to her. She planned, she schemed, she eliminated the problem ( like her mother did by moving or dr shopping and god knows what else), she stole, and she moved. I think it was rumored that DD killed her own mother, and with her job as a medical aid- I suspect there may have been some mysterious deaths related to her work. I think Gypsy was conditioned to think that this was a pretty acceptable way to remove the person hurting her, and I think that her sense of right and wrong were so skewed by her perception being overpowered by her mother- she did this the only way she knew she could succeed. I'm not sure how long her prison sentence is but I hope she gets to live some of her life and experience goodness. But, I also wonder if she suffered from an attachment disorder and unfortunately is a sociopath? Who knows. This is so interesting. Thanks for posting! I truly enjoy your channel. I'm currently in grad school for applied behavioral analysis and I'm thinking of adding in some forensics training after I'm done with my masters. So thank you for your content!! It's fascinating!!!!

Such a sad, tragic story 😞 Poor Gypsy sweet young and innocent but warped by her mentally unstable mother! She didn't know no smdifferebt this girl. It touches on, in Starz the series How even DeeDees mum was similar to the way DeeDee is to Gypsy. It passed down the line, Grandma, Mum and then Daughter How she developed like her mother & was very similar to how the moyher talked or treated Gypsy! She loved her but only because she needed her were! I felt for the mother as sick as she was I know but she did love Gypsy but for the wrong reasons. This young girl had only her mother there her whole life, completely being her everything and her role model. Gypsy watching and learning DeeDee not have a job or go to learn school aspirations, goal etc for Gypsy to look and learn, yet unfortunately she ended up having leanrred to steal and lie. She loved her mother. Things must of been so much more sinister and intense the last year of their lives. Gypsy wanted to grow up and was becoming a normal young lady and would even rebel (usual of teenagers) Her mother would never allow anything if the sort for the rest of her life, Gypsy was her addiction for attention zmand she was her charity for the money Gypsy would receive. So growing up around this as her normality upbringing and coming to terms that it wasnt 'normal' she had been lied to by the one and only person you trust more than anyone and she could see no way out. Her mother wanted her by her side forever. This girl just wanted 'the normal most teenagers imagine having! I think Gypsy knowingly knew what she wanted to do and thought it out because if some but she could only escape by learning what would DeeDee do if this was happening to her? Gypsy rational was that this was the only way she could survive and live free even I prison and she was in some sort before her mother died! I think she's actually living now it's a vet sad, peculiar and sorry state of oeooles lives. So tragic x

Gypsy was lucky to come out alive. Cannot comprehend why SS weren't informed. Im watching new docu on Prime, after her release. Interesting seeing her. I think that new husband is as controlling as her mum was. I feel she may have complex trauma. I can relate to her in some ways when i see her reactions to him.

When assessing IQ for criminal capacity and competency what type of testing do you use? Is it just standardised IQ tests? How do you factor in who might actually be very intelligent but have issues with executive function or other issues that may affect their ability to even take the test in the first place?

      Hi, Samantha.
You know what, I actually started writing about Beverley Allitt for this series, they change my mind. The reason is, although she was apparently diagnosed by some (though not others) with Munchhausen's by proxy, the features were not really that 'classic'. The children she killed were not her own, and she faked their illnesses over a relatively short period of time. Still an interesting case, but not much to say about this diagnosis.

During the scene where it was revealed the woman of a 'sick' child was poisoning that daughter, to the point of death, by spiking her food with lemon cleaning solution, freaked me right the freak out. That was my introduction to the disorder.

    Dr. Das,
Playing devils advocate. Here in US the doctor and hospital would probably be sued by mom.
Mom would have the best lawyers in the state fighting to get the child's case, because of the money (hospital and doctor) they would receive if they won.
#2. How do you prove a Child is faking an illness?
Just because one 1 of 101 doctors think she is faking it does it matter?
The mother who has done everything to try and find help for her child, she has changed the child's name and birthdate on occasion ,so the child could see different doctors and hopefully find a cure....
This great mom has fought long and hard to help for her child find relief for her continuing symptoms.
Look that mom was geting a shit load of money for the (child's mental and physical disabilities,, plus substidized housing ( Free housing) food stamps (free food) and everything in between. The mom was also getting money for herself because she was taking care for a disabled person in her home. Her mom was a conman. The only manhausen problem mom had was a disease called greed. She used her daughter as the con(witch oil) she sold it to all that would buy it. (suckers) You don't know if the mom wanted a doctor to call her daughter a fake inorder for mom to sue him and the hospital. Much better payday, don't you think. Look mom was a criminal and made the daughter a criminal. Monkey see monkey do .....
