Multiply both 3.5 and 6 by 10, result is 35:60; divide by 5 you have 7:12

    Given:-
3½ days to 6 days, find the equivalent ratio.
Begin by expressing 3½ as an improper fraction in the equation: (6⁄2 + 1⁄2) : 6
    ∴ 7⁄2 : 6 … and now simplify:
Eliminate the fraction by multiplying both sides by the denominator (in this case: 2)
    ∴ (2) 7⁄2 : 6 (2) …
    ∵ 2 × 7-halves is 7 … and 2 × 6 is 12
    ∴ 7 : 12 … the correct answer is: c).
7 days to 12 days … Q.E.D. (Yet, still I feel I'll not get the mark if it's not written in ink!)

    Nice explaination. I haven't taken a test in decades, so I offten don't look at the chooses first. I just saw seven halfs vs 12 halfs. (7*1/2)/(6*1/2) = 7/12. Although noticing that 2*(3 1/2) = 7 and 2*6 = 12 is quicker.

Anyone who does cooking/culinary school, has reductions/enlargements of recipes,i.e. 1/2 portions,3x portions, etc, this is all proportional, and ratios,in a very well known manner! And other recipes include items, like gunpowder, steel, brass, and lots of plastics, rubber, etc.,but thats the tip of the iceberg! Thank you for your attention! Thank you 😇 😊!

    3½ days to 6 days
    convert 3½
    to an improper fraction : (3 x 2 + 1) / 2 =7/2
    7/2 days to 6 days
    7/2 / 6
    7/2 x 2 = 7
    6 x 2 = 12
    7 : 12 -> 7 to 12 -> c)✅

I don't have the patience for these loooooooooooooooong, wiiiiiiiiiiiindy dissertations on problems that are so simple.
I see the problem; can do it in my head in 30 seconds and get it right; but after 3 minutes of listening, I fall asleep.
Of course I realize not everyone is like that but I'm not talking about them and I mean not disrespect, I'm just talking about me and now my kid.
I bring it up because my kid is having the same problem in school.
He gets everything right somehow then gets bored and cuts classes for the rest of the week which usually gets him detentions.
Tell 'em what you're gonna tell 'em; then tell 'em; then tell 'em again.
    Done.

Took me longer to read the question than to solve it, and no i didn't use my slide rule nor could I find my log tables.
Incidentally, in UK we were using slide rules as late as mid 70s because calculators had only basic addition division subtraction and multiplication functions (no sq rt ) and the cheapest cost £30 ($67) back in 1975, or about $390 today (2025). They were battery powered and used 4 AA batteries per day. Times have changed.

  • @RobertClements-z9r

The logic is so much simpler.
We know A & B are out because they are unde 50 %
Since we’re looking at 3.5 to 6 we know the answer must be over 50%.
    So…it’s the .5 that is over 50%.
    That’s 1/12 of of 6.
    50% of 12 = 6
    Plus
    1/12 =
    7/12
    That’s the answer.

As you said off the bat, it's blatantly all about proportion. It's not about fractions, that's just added to confuse you. It's just 3 and a half x2 and 6 x 2
